Prologue
Prologue
Sometimes, I think about what I did wrong.
My eyes landed on the curved trees as it rippled into nothingness. The grass beneath was wet with stains of red. Pale, cold, and lifeless creatures lay on the ground as the forest illusion vanished into thin air. The mist and the illusion of forest which protected us for years disappeared, leaving nothingness from the disguise of our underground city but the remains of our people that failed to flee. The disappearance of the magic meant that our guardians, the priests of Celeste coven, had fallen.
The home that I’ve built to hide my people from enemies, may it be them or our kind, became the cemetery for us but I’d rather them die than be taken as captives, slaves or experimental creatures. Years of studying healing and life had made me prepared for the damages brought by warfare but even my life force won’t be enough to bring back everyone nor heal them. But I’d rather try than do nothing at all.
As I prepare my mind and spirit for my strongest and probably last healing spell, a hand reached out for mine. She gave me tender smile, as if she knew what was on my mind. I let go of her hand and reached out for her shoulder, my forehead in hers, as I muttered my apology for my selfishness in silence. I turned to my awakened state and she faced me with eyes glazed with tears and sad smile. For a moment, I forgot about what my sacrifice was for as my heart hurt for the woman I was going to leave behind. I never thought heartache can cause agonizing physical pain, my eyes blurred but I can clearly see her face, enlightened by the soft gold glow from my awakened faery form. Her emerald green eyes bright against gold staring at me with conviction. I can almost hear the gears turning inside her head and its bound to ruin my plan.
She placed a hand on my chest and I can feel the power coursing through my body. The faint glow of my skin grew brighter, taking everyone’s attention.
“Hold my hand and I will protect you.” She said with a smile.
“Millie you can’t do this. You need to go.”
She glanced at me before summoning a huge thunderstorm. One of her tattoos emitted a faint glow and dark clouds covered the sky and thunder came roaring after. “You keep forgetting your wife’s the mad witch.”
“No. I need you to go. Someone’s waiting for us at home and we can’t fail- at least you.”
She strike the first creature to jump on us with lightning that came from her fingers. Her free hand was up in the air as if pulling onto something and continuous thunder rang my ears. In seconds, lightning strike random areas, creating explosions that protected us from the enemies.
“You know you can’t do this alone.” she answered in defiance. “As much as I want to hear her first words, watch her first steps or teach her everything I know, I’d rather her be safe with our people. I’ve never been this selfless, Xavier. I don’t even know what’s going to happen after today. But I’m taking this chance and trust everyone. Although, it wouldn’t hurt if I had one more moment with our daughter, and you too.”
“I’m sorry.” was the only thing I can say, hearing her voice crack as she tried to keep her composure.
She faced me and held my face. “No Xavier, the moment I met you in that garden, I knew this was gonna happen but I still chose you- I will choose you over and over again. You and my little Corinne.”
