Chapter 1: Winston Abel Smith
My name is Winston Abel Smith. Officer Smith. I have lived for many years. I have learned things you may never know, and I have learned life lessons the hard way and the good way. I am a 73 year old man living in Birmingham, and truth be told I am not that important, but I did meet people who were far more important than me. I met a man once. Year was 1923 or so. I was trying to arrest him but damn, there was something about that bloke, you know? You probably don't get it. So now just yesterday on an average Tuesday morning I am sitting down on my deathbed (I was always so scared of death, and now that it's almost here it seems I don't care) I hear a knock at the door. I am laying on the couch in the back living room of my old home. Currently the year is 1973, so it seems this happened exactly 50 years ago. This fellow I saw all those years ago is there, and I invite him to sit down. I inform him of my lung cancer predicament, and he gives me his apologies. He begins to tell me a story that started years ago. Let me tell you of the man's story, he shared with me. Before I start this story I feel it necessary to catch you up on the prologue. Specifically a man named “Az”, or Al’Azagath.
Al’Azagath was no man. He was a demon. This thing had no emotions. Simply with his will he can destroy anything. His power is unrivaled in the mortal realm, but in the spirit world that was different. He was an abyss of hatred, greed, anger, death, suffering, addiction, hell, emptiness, depression, illness, sickness, misery, and dread. He was fear incarnate. He was simply, on all plains of reality at the same time. He spread drought, famine, and plague throughout societies for fun. He possessed bodies, tortured the minds of people for fun. Where went genocide, Disease, starvation, natural disasters and other nightmares started.
It is said that one who walks near him becomes depressed, ill, and stricken with poor luck. Stories have spread of how he killed people by touching them, and pulled the strings of politics. With his will he could wipe out spirits. They would be vanquished, their souls wiped, records destroyed, and everything they had ever done, and anything they had inadvertently caused reversed. Their minds, consciousness, and very element of even being thought of will be destroyed. They will be destroyed into nothing, and nothing would be destroyed, so that anyone who had ever had any contact with them would have their lives changed, and it would be impossible to think about the nothing they had become. Everyone would forget, and forget that they forgot about forgetting. All beings exist within God, and God is nature. Everything under this world, and our “verse” is nature. But some things are beyond nature. There is this world. Above it is the afterlife, the entire Verse we live in, with everything that had existed, and exists all kept here. Then there is the abyss. Shadows beneath. Things that have never existed, but have always existed. Things with the power to manipulate everything in the Verse. Vile outcasts. Cruel, sadistic, beings of death that have existed as long as time, before time, but also exist outside of time. You could argue that evil does not exist, just young, unwise spirits, but if there's good there must be bad. One cant exist without the other.
One could come across a man in the desert, while both are starving. He could kill him and eat him, or team up with him. There is always the voice in your head drawing you to the dark. There is always a negative. There are always negatives, and that can not be avoided. But what about a being that feeds on suffering? That relies on these negative things, and inadvertently causes chaos and suffering? That cannot be stopped? Al’Azagath is beyond our comprehension, and with his associate entities he loves suffering, and is dark. When a man is drawn to the dark he can safely look into it, if he has enough light, but what about when the darkness's manipulation pulls him in, and the cold whispers of the dark have kept him there. That's when he goes past the point of no return.
In the Verse there is life, and there is death. There is the world, and beyond. What these things are is beyond nature. The veil cannot be broken, but things from the Abyss can leak into the Verse, and manipulate it, to feed off of the order of nature, and shake it up. When feelings of negativity are at the most, that is when we are at our most vulnerable to the darkness. When tensions are high, weapons are stockpiled, and the world can be turned into an eternal winter caused by nightmarish fireballs that is when we are vulnerable. Biblical isn't it? A man with a strong will has the fate of the world on his fingers. The tension of earth is a sturdy rope, but one part of it has been whittled down to a little twine keeping it together. One bad action and the taught rope snaps, and chaos opens. When the veil thins, and the darkness seeps in, to manipulate, and pull the strings of the crisis, the light must do something to stop it. Around the world a feeling of mutual dread was felt on April 23rd 1923.
In reality Richard Wesson was able to get to the loudspeaker, and spread the knowledge that the alleged Russian missiles were not heading towards America. It was at this second that he stopped the Hydrogen Bombs from being luanched, and saving billions. The cold war went on for several more years, but ended. The Nuclear Winter was avoided. But that is just one reality.
God saw that when the radar malfunctioned and signaled that several Russian bombs were headed towards New York the bombs flew and nature was destroyed. The earth went into eternal winter. Years earlier in 1923 Margeret Wesson, and Richard Wesson Sr. lay in their beds, with knives in their throat, and the man pointed his gun at sleeping Richard Wesson in his crib. It was a tragedy, yes, but the brutal murder of the Wesson family in ther London apartment only shocked the world for a week, but their familys forever. The thin twine of stability was about the snap, and Richard was holding on for dear life. Then someone came. George came.
