Prologue
Prologue
In the ancient times, the Gods of Old and the Fae ruled the Earth and the heavens. The two species warred together, however, fighting for dominance, but neither side prevailing completely. Once humans began to migrate out of what is now known as the continent of Africa, the Fae and the Gods briefly paused their endless feud in an effort to have the humans worship them instead. They even began mating with each other, creating half-breeds that were as strong as the Fae and the Gods but their appearance favoring the humans. This allowed the half-breeds to rule over sects of regular humans.
However, a particular group of humans, known as the Iron Guild, thought that the existence of the Fae, the Gods, and the half-breeds were a slight on humanity—constantly interfering with the fate of humans. The Iron Guild declared a war on the unnatural beings after discovering that the natural element iron was the only weakness the Fae and the Gods had, able to kill them if needed. Thus, bringing in what we now know as the Iron Age.
The Guild had slayed most of the ancient beings, while the rest retreated to their own realms—becoming nothing more than legend and myth. But – these creatures still exist, occasionally causing trouble or even helping humans from afar. Sometimes, they still breed with humans, creating a secret world within the humans’ own realm. The Guild, still in existence, has sworn to continue warring with the beings in secret, ensuring that humans and the Fae and the Gods stay separate from one another. The Guild hides in the shadows and passes their skills down to the next generation and those who have proven their worth to the cause. Mainly those who had suffered great tragedies at the hands of the original beings are recruited to protect humanity.
While the Guild may believe that all Fae and Gods are evil, this is not the case. The ancient ones are still alive and well. And they all live among us.
