Chapter 1

The Unlikely Soulmate

None of the Above

Victoria Weston was sitting quietly in one of the lounge rooms in her large house. She was waiting for one of her old friends, Veronica Crompton. Victoria, along with her only child, a daughter Marion, were the last two members of their branch of the Weston family. Marion Weston as an elegant twenty seven year old woman. She was reasonably tall, at five foot eight with a slender well proportioned figure. Marion wore glasses, was not particularly fashion obsessed and had a rather stately presence. She was a sensible and intelligent woman, but was quite self contained. She, when she wanted to, made friends easily, but chose her friends carefully. Exactly what Marion wanted to get out of life, even her mother did not know. Marion seemed to have little interest in the social scene surrounding the affluent and influential families in the local area. Victoria’s goal at present was to get her daughter to find a suitable potential life partner and marry.

This is where Veronica Crompton came into Victoria’s plans. Her son Charles Crompton was a Lawyer, thirty two years old and with political ambitions. A wife like Marion, on his arm would be an asset moving forward with his career plans. To discuss a possible future marriage between Charles and Marion was the reason Veronica was coming to talk with Victoria. Charles was at the point in his life where finding the right bride was needed soon if he was to proceed down his chosen career path. Getting Charles interested in Marion as a future wife would not be that difficult, the problem would be Marion. Nobody, at this stage had much of an idea as to what Marion saw as her future. Marion was at present working in a library, she had a couple of university degrees in arts and literature, she came across as a capable and intelligent woman. She seems to have little interest in fashion, always dressed tidily but conservatively.

Veronica and Victoria had moved in the same social circle for most of their lives. Both families had known each other for years and years. Veronica agreed with Victoria that Marion would make an excellent wife for an aspiring young politician. When Marion dressed up a bit she was attractive, but not in a trashy way. Marion was intelligent, always thought about what she was going to say before she opened her mouth. Charles would not find anyone more suitable. It all came down to what Marion wanted out of life.

When Veronica Crompton arrived she was brought into the lounge where Victoria was. Victoria greeted her old friend ” How have you been Veronica. Good to see you looking so well.“. The maid interrupted them, bringing the a trolley with tea, coffee and a few small cakes. As soon as the maid left, Victoria got straight down to business, the reason Veronica had been invited here today. Veronica would need to discuss this with her son Charles but could not see any reason to not agree with Marion being a good choice as a future spouse. Victoria had not raised this at all with Marion as of yet, but it was time she started to think of her future. Victoria was going to have a talk with Marion later. Marion had no prospective men in her life at present. Nobody was going to force either of them into a marriage, this was to get the both to consider a possible marriage in the future as on paper they both looked a good match. They should get together and spend some time in each others company, test out how compatible they are and go from there.

Later that day, when Marion arrived home from working at the library, as they were eating the evening meal, Victoria broached the subject with Marion. “Marion I would like to begin talking with you regarding how you see your life in the future. Are you planing in the future to find a good husband and have a family of your own ? This house is awfully large for just the two of us. If you do not want to go down that path the choice is totally yours to make what you want of your life for yourself.” Victoria pointed out how Marion did not have much of a social life outside of work so she did not come across too many men that she may want to settle down with. Victoria then told Marion of the discussion she had today with Veronica Crompton and how her son Charles, a lawyer with a good job as well as ambitions for the future was at the stage of his life where he was looking to find the right woman and settle down. Marion had not had much to do with Charles recently but must remember a little about him as the Weston and Crompton families had socialized together in the past. Victoria informed Marion, that no one intended to force the two of them together, but if they were both in agreement, they should start seeing each other in a social environment and take things from there.

Veronica broached the same subject with her son Charles. Charles liked the idea of Marion as a partner. She had the right look to make a good wife for an ambitious future politician that he saw himself as. Charles did not consider any possible romantic attachment, he saw her more as an accessory, a perfect wife for a future rising political star. He may get lucky and they may find some chemistry between them, but he could still see it working and a good choice for the future. Charles himself was quite tall and good looking. He was well spoken and seemed to easily attract the attention of those around him. His partner should also be tall, which Marion was. Marion had an old world elegance, people noticed her, but not in a way that would shift the main focus away from him. A bit of an upgrade on her wardrobe and overall style would be required, but not a lot. Marion always used her brain before she opened her mouth, another important requirement for a politician’s wife. If she was interested he could think of no one more suitable than her.
