Chapter 1
In the intricate tapestry of life, when people assert its challenges, they're not merely uttering words; they're revealing truths forged through personal ordeals. These narratives may not alter our circumstances, but they serve as guiding lights, aiding us in handling and understanding our unique situations. In my world, it's a harsh reality—one where I was deemed unworthy by my mate, the beta of my old pack.
He chose my stepsister as his mate, leaving me grappling with rejection. Expressing this inner torment to others doesn't alleviate the pain; it merely adds layers to the complexity. It's easy for people to speak of their sufferings, but living through that anguish is a stark contrast, a journey filled with the weight of emotions.
The pain I endure since that rejection transcends mere physical discomfort. In my childhood, I used to cry in response to bodily pains. Now, I almost welcome that physical pain, hoping it will overshadow the persistent ache in my heart. Rejection, a slow poison, inflicts a gradual demise, a relentless fading away with each passing day. It's as if I am slowly dying, a silent struggle etched into every moment of my existence.
It's more than just witnessing their togetherness; it's the profound realization that he chose her, my stepsister, as his mate, despite knowing I was his true mate. The agony is indescribable – a searing pain when the one meant to love, support, and protect turns away.
But crying won't alter a thing. My tears, my lamentations, hold no power to reshape my reality. So, I made a choice – not to change for him, but to evolve for my own goodness. In the face of rejection, I've decided to redefine myself, embracing a transformation born from resilience and self-love.
It's been a lengthy two and a half years since Logan's rejection, a day I'd rather not revisit. Yet, the haunting visuals of that moment persist in my dreams, robbing me of countless nights of peaceful sleep.
To cope with the pain, I sought solace in distraction. I immersed myself in the world of elementary education, taking on the role of a third-grade teacher. Surrounded by the innocence and laughter of children, I found a semblance of joy and happiness, a balm for my wounded soul.
Independence became my ally, and the company of kids became my refuge. I forged a path to happiness, often sharing laughter and jokes with friends. Some find it perplexing, especially those privy to the knowledge of my rejection. How can I be content, they wonder, when my mate has turned away?
Leaving my old pack behind, I ventured to Moon Crescent Pack, where my maternal family resides. My origin, a product of a one-night stand, left me with unanswered questions about my biological father. His identity remains a mystery, known only to the shadows of my past.
Three years elapsed after my birth, and my mother found her mate – my stepdad. Together, they welcomed two children, and in the midst of their newfound family, I became a distant memory, relegated to the status of a mistake.
The identity of my biological father remains a mystery, a void in my understanding of who I am. Sometimes, I wonder how different my circumstances might have been if I knew more about him.
Despite the lingering questions about my past, today is a significant day. The sports meet competition at my school awaits, and I've invested time and effort into preparing my students, particularly Sarah. Her endearing nature and sweet voice led her to choose reciting a poem on stage over physical activities. Notably, Sarah is the cherished daughter of our pack's Alpha, her parents showering her with adoration.
Prepared for the day ahead, I descended to the kitchen to whip up breakfast before diligently packing my lunch. With the kitchen counter cleaned, I embarked on my journey to school, eager to embrace the challenges and joys that awaited me.
The daily journey from my home to school is a fifteen-minute drive by car. After six months of teaching and with the support of my maternal uncle, I acquired a second-hand car. I find solace in driving, preferring it over the chaotic rush of local buses.
Upon reaching the school, I smoothly parked my car in the designated lot. My first stop was the office, where I dutifully signed in for attendance. Proceeding to my class, I warmly greeted the students, retrieving the attendance register from the almirah to mark the presence of each student.
As I conducted the attendance, a faint sound of weeping caught my attention. Without hesitation, I rose to identify the source and discovered Sarah beneath her seat, tears streaming down her face. Swiftly, I gently pulled her into my arms, cradling her on my lap.
"Sara, baby, what happened?" I inquired, wiping away her tears. She hiccuped in response, clinging to me. Again, I questioned, "Why are you crying? Did someone say something to you?" After she calmed down, she whispered, "I'm scared. What if I forget the poem you helped me learn? My parents will hate me."
Reassuringly, I whispered to her, "No, Sarah. No one will hate you, especially not your parents. They love you, and they'll be proud of your courage to speak in front of everyone. I'll be right there to support you. You don't have to worry about a thing." Placing a gentle kiss on her chubby cheeks, I aimed to comfort her.
Her laughter echoed, and she playfully declared, "pinky promise." Responding with a smile, I connected my pinky finger with hers, affirming the promise.
Later, as the bell chimed, signaling the next phase of the day, an announcement summoned all participating students to the auditorium. I proceeded to my office to retrieve some papers, overhearing teachers discussing upcoming exams. Amidst this, Olivia, my best friend and fellow teacher, approached, exuberantly screaming. The surrounding teachers and I exchanged cringes, prompting me to hush her by covering her mouth. "Sshh Olivia, this is a school, not your house!" I scolded her with a playful admonition.
"Ahh, Aria, if you knew who is coming to our school, then you'd start screaming like me too," Olivia exclaimed. "Who's coming?" I wondered how I missed information about the guests for the functions.
"It's Alpha Xavier and his Beta from the Breckenridge Furs pack. Do you know Alpha Xavier is known for his bravery and cunningness?" Olivia shared the news with excitement.
I was familiar with Alpha Xavier, renowned not only for his bravery and cunningness but also for his personality. Despite never having seen him, I had heard about him from fellow pack members. He was the brother of our Luna, and the rumor mill suggested that his mate left him for a new human boyfriend, adding to the challenges everyone faces. Nobody is fully happy, it seems.
After our small chit-chat, Olivia and I made our way to the auditorium where the program was about to commence. I was particularly excited as it was Sarah's turn. I patiently waited for her to take the stage. She seemed a little nervous, scanning the audience. When she spotted her parents, who were beaming at her, they wished her the best of luck. Sarah continued to survey the crowd, and as her eyes met mine, she smiled. I responded by giving her a thumbs up, and with that, she confidently began reciting the poem.
Love is understanding
Love is compromise
Love is generosity
Love is sacrifice
Love does not discriminate
Love is free of charge
Love is the solution
Love is who we are
Love is universal
Love is heaven sent
Love was fastened to the cross
Love is the greatest testament
Love is triumphant
Love is Somersaults
Love is compassion
Love is free of fault
Love is forgiveness
Love offers a hand
Love is eternal
Love is his command
When Sarah concluded her poem, the crowd erupted into a big round of applause, even giving her a standing ovation. Alpha and Luna, Sarah's parents, beamed with pride, their smiles wide. Sarah herself was overjoyed, her happiness evident. As we exchanged glances, I blew her a flying kiss, and in return, she responded with that adorable, heartwarming smile of hers.
After the program ended, I decided to take a moment to myself and headed towards the restroom. The school's corridors were slowly emptying as students and attendees dispersed. As I walked, my mind lingered on the heartfelt performance Sarah delivered, and a sense of pride swelled within me.
Lost in my thoughts, I turned a corner, only to be abruptly halted by a strong, masculine scent. It was an intoxicating aroma, instantly recognizable – the scent of a werewolf. My senses heightened as I felt an unusual tingling in my body. My wolf stirred within me, awakening with a mixture of hope and disbelief.
The scent pulled me with an irresistible force, leading me through the corridor. I navigated through the now-deserted hallways, following the alluring fragrance. The anticipation and shock coursing through me created a whirlwind of emotions. What could this mean?
As I approached a junction, the scent intensified, and I turned to see a figure emerging from another hallway. And there he was – the source of the enchanting aroma. Our eyes met, and time seemed to stand still for a moment. The recognition was mutual; I could see it in the shock mirrored on his face.
