Prologue
April, 14th, 235 million BC (Around the time when dinosaurs roamed on earth)
The air was still and musty. Silence blanketed the empty land. I could feel the pulsing heat from the lava crawling over my land. Warm, stale air filled my lungs. I retreated into my darkroom. The cold stone felt nice against my calised paws. I tripped over the small rocks as I tried to make it over to my bed. I reached out and touched my skull mask. I could feel the cracks and deformities that hid along the surface of the worn-down mask. I carefully slipped it over my face. The blurry shapes turned into clearly defined colorful waves. I had designed my mask a while back for fun, having no idea that one day I’d need it. When I was younger, I had an accident, Which would boil half of my face and leave my right eye just a socket. My mask hides those ugly scars while also protecting them. In later years my mask would also help with my vision as my remaining vision is now blurred.
The heat vision allows me to have a chance to survive on this wretched island. The heat is insufferable, and the smell is even worse.
Sadly my siblings have trapped me here, or so they think.
I walked towards my cape and flung it on, clipping the chain around my neck.
Through the door, I could see the heated bodies of my guards waiting for me as per usual. I nudged the heavy wooden door to the side and continued to walk down the spiraling stairs. The guards flanked me on both sides.
We reached the end of the spiraling stairway, which led into a darker, longer tunnel lined with ominous rooms. I nodded towards the guards signaling to them to leave me. Both of them walked into their rooms with corresponding nameplates.
I continued past the guardrooms. I stepped into another wider, well-lit passageway that connected the sleeping side with the rest of the castle. In the middle of this passage a giant wooden door stood proud and mighty. I nugged the heavy doors open enough to slip my frail frame through them.
taking a deep breath of sweet still air. I spread my huge wings and with one fatal swoop I took off. Powering through the fog. I knew exactly where I was heading. Straight for my wretched siblings. The ones who caused decades of suffering on that old island. Their magic had finally weakened with age. They couldn’t live forever but I could.
