Summary

In this high-stakes tale, Hetty, a reclusive and socially marginalized high school girl, recreates her ancestor's transformation formula. Eager to escape her dull existence and take over her life, she drinks it, unaware of the primal force it will unleash. The potion awakens a dormant beast within her, turning her into Edwina, a half-woman, half-beast creature of the night whose savage instincts and lack of humanity reject all social norms, leaving Hetty struggling to contain her new, wild persona. As Edwina, Hetty obtains the life, confidence, and power she always lacked, becoming a force of nature. She uses her newfound strength to confront her bully, Vanessa Fields, and catches the attention of Vanessa’s intended boyfriend, Ryder Blackwood, the popular Alpha football star she secretly admires. However, as Hetty finds herself more and more drawn to her new life, Edwina threatens to take over completely. Told through the eyes of Hetty, Edwina, and Ryder, each grapples with their own desires and fears. Caught between the life she yearns for and the monstrous identity she fears, Hetty must fight to regain control before she loses herself to the beast within. As the primal forces within her grow stronger, Hetty faces a terrifying choice: succumb to the seductive power of Edwina and lose her own existence forever, or reclaim her humanity and forfeit her newfound life and love.

It Begins

The house sat neither cozy nor hostile—caught between dignity and neglect among its respectably well‑kept neighbors. Yet its brickwork had darkened to a bruised plum, the mortar crumbling with unpruned shrubs pressing against the foundation while the grass lay in uneven patches. The front door, gaudy in a coat of glossy red, shone like a lacquered wound amid the peeling paint around it, a display of brilliance surrounded by disregard.

On the side of the house, a narrow white door leads down to the cellar. Window wells admit light cautiously, wary of scrutiny. Curtains hang not to welcome the world, but to keep prying eyes away.

In the private basement, where mildew clings to the stone walls and the air feels heavy with a faint lingering chemical tang, stand heavy wooden lab tables covered with glassware, retorts, condensers, burners, and flasks. They bubble and boil with various colorful liquids amongst scattered chemistry books and papers. A single glass vial of purplish elixir waits in a woman's hand, bright against the gloom, ready to unmake the careful order of her life.

One portrait—her great‑great grandfather—hangs on the wall, sharing her same eyes of ambition. He observes almost too keenly, as though waiting for her to finally understand.

In that dim cellar of her parents’ house, the young woman in a white lab jacket studies the mysterious vial as if it were accursed, fixated on the liquid swirling into a violent emerald—an elixir promising liberation, or damnation.

The storm outside rattles against the basement windowpanes and the wind howls like a beast denied entry. Distant thunder surrounds the house and black clouds hurriedly gather as if to watch.

After a hesitation of fear and doubt, resolve seizes her. She raises the vial to her lips as her pulse quickens. Tonight, beneath the violent storm outside, its power will be tested again for the first time in two centuries.

She drinks it.

Thunder peals.

The storm’s breath presses close against the window and leans in to witness her becoming. The taste is sharp as iron, bitter as betrayal. The moment it hits her stomach, something ancient stirs. Her breath catches. Her fingers tremble with fear.

Then it begins.

She has always felt different from others but never understood why. The secret her great-great grandfather kept hidden for generations stands unmasked, and her purpose is clear. For the first time, she will undergo the forbidden transformation she both fears and longs for.

As the dark clouds eagerly smother the full moon outside, a burst of lightning flashes at the window, momentarily illuminating her upturned face. For a brief instant, her irises can be seen, shifting from brown to a piercing, luminous amber. Perhaps by the lighting. Perhaps not.

On the wall behind her, her shadow is momentarily cast.

Like a huge, monstrous spider.

Then darkness.

Yet the lingering amber can still be seen in her eyes.

Another flash.

Her black pupils now burn with a ring of crimson fire. She gasps—doubling over—and drops the vial she holds.

It breaks on the concrete floor.

Her hands and knees quickly follow. Her pulse pounds in her ears. A heat forms inside her—bright, furious, volcanic—and spreads like wildfire, leaving nothing untouched.

A floorboard creaks above her—soft, but unmistakable, the shift of weight on old boards she’s known all her life. She goes still. The heat inside her does not. For a heartbeat she cannot tell whether the pounding she hears is her pulse or footsteps approaching the cellar door. Then the steps fade, and the danger passes… or pretends to.

Will she become grotesque? Will she regret this?

A sharp pang jolts through her. She wants to cry out, to resist—but another surge of heat forbids it. Only a primal growl escapes her as a wave of first pain and then exhilaration surges through her.

What's happening? I feel everything but I’m not in charge of my body. Someone else is. Who?

Her gaze snags on the open yearbook on the workbench—her page empty, untouched. A life no one had bothered to sign.

“YES!”

The word, spoken by someone else, slips out of her before she could stop it—low, breathless, almost reverent as if it had been waiting. Not a cry of pain. Not fear. A welcoming.

Bones shift and elongate, a sensation intensely alien and yet strangely welcome, as if they’ve waited too long to fit her properly.

A shiver cuts through the heat. Not fear—recognition.

Can I control this other self… or will it control me?

Her shifting bones sing with a strange elegance, each new contour settling into place with the grace of something long denied its rightful shape.

Newfound muscles form beneath her skin, ripple and contract with an animal’s strength. Her entire frame expands—not painfully, elegantly, like an awakening panther stretching. A fierce clarity blooms inside her—revealing a truth she has spent her whole life refusing to see.

And with her body's expansion comes resistance.

Her blouse strains. Sleeves ride up, seams tightening around arms that no longer fit the idea of them. Fabric draws taut across her back as her shoulders broaden. Buttons pull before popping off in surrender. A sense of awe sweeps over her.

Then the bra.

Straps bite deep as her chest expands. The cups are overwhelmed by swelling flesh. The first strap breaks. The second follows in quick surrender. Her shoulders widen further. The band gives way. It snaps free, falling uselessly from her new frame.

Cloth yields. She does not.

A small, wicked smile curves her lips. The smile lingers, as if testing whether the feeling will return if she lets it fade.

Jet-black hair cascades down her back, silver streaks racing through it like the very bolts of lightning outside. They glow with the mark of an ancient inheritance. It coils and flares with a mind of its own, alive in the still air. Her lips and fingernails are a wicked, glossy black.

She feels the thrill of danger and beauty entwined. Fangs hide behind parted lips, not grotesque, but exquisite—like cut glass. Nails turned into daggers—elegant claws—beautiful, brutal, and capable.

The air crackles with the scent of alchemy, senses heighten to an acute pitch. The distant sounds of the wind outside grow more distinct. Her eyes—once a soft, overlooked brown—ignite into gold. No longer eyes that shrink from stares, but eyes that demand to be met.

Every detail of the world around her sharpens to an almost painful clarity. Then her shoe tips split open to reveal excessively long, black toenails.

She rises.

With the transformation complete, she finds the mirror. She catches sight of herself.

Stops.

And smiles.

Her reflection reveals a fearsome visage that intoxicates. Taller. All in her legs. Easily six inches more, maybe seven. Stronger. Her muscles shift visibly under smooth skin—arms coiled with strength, thighs sculpted, abs drawn tight like armor beneath velvet. Her form is unmistakably feminine, but feral. Statuesque. Stunning. Intimidating.

This is not some grotesque mask. It is not a monster. This is her.

The girl no one saw has become someone no one can ignore.

Her long, strong-bodied limbs are visibly ready to spring. Every muscle poised and taut, powerful serpents awakening from slumber.

Eyes blaze with an otherworldly intensity, lit from within by a power long suppressed.

She feels herself rising to a new level of humanity, embodying a creature of legend—one that has not walked the earth in over two hundred years.

Hers is a form that perfectly encapsulates her essence. Her appearance is a stark contrast to her counterpart’s suppressed desires and the dull life of an unwanted, undesirable schoolgirl.

Gone is the hunched posture. The slouched walk. The hushed voice. Now she stands tall, chin lifted, back straight. Hair a wild mane. This new side, once a myth, is no longer confined to invisibility or the pages of fiction, but created to act, to pursue, to dominate.

The quiet girl hidden behind glasses and decency is no longer just anyone the world can walk over.

A rumble of laughter slips from her throat—low, rich, and sharp-edged with delight.

She savors every sensation she feels—even though she isn’t the one moving the body. Yet relishes this exciting form, unshackled and unapologetic, a true reflection of her nature and of the one now in charge. Her primal teeth lurking behind her lovely lips, her striking hair, her formidable nails, all speak of the untamed freedom she embodies.

Society may find her appearance startling, but she sees only beauty in her raw reflection. These teeth, this body, these hands—are the means for freeing herself from the will of others and the burden of her self-perceived nonexistence.

She steps toward the cellar stairs. Each movement is precise, almost too graceful. The house creaks around her, as if it wants to step back.

Her heightened senses hear her parents above her—the soft turning of a page, the low drone of the TV, the small domestic proofs of lives still obedient to rules she no longer recognizes. Their sounds drift through the floorboards like dust, faint and without claim. Their world is shrinking. Hers is about to expand beyond their reach. Once, those murmurs could steady her. Now they are no more than weather behind walls.

They sleep in a house built for a smaller life—one she no longer fits. The house feels smaller now, like a childhood toy she has outgrown. Whatever expectations they built around her stay upstairs with them. It does not follow.

She considers them for the span of a breath—not with affection or hatred, but with the cool appraisal reserved for objects left behind in a locked room. They belong to the before. Harmless. Small. Turning in their dim orbit while she steps into the after.

She dismisses them the way a wild thing dismisses the rustle of distant leaves—an instinctive sorting of the irrelevant from the essential. They are not part of her rising. They are not witnesses to it. They are simply there, oblivious to what now lives and breathes in their cellar.

Before her, the heavy wooden steps lead up to the outside doorway and her new world beyond. She takes a step towards them, the rough grain of the wooden step under her foot, then another, gaining confidence in her new form.

She climbs. The stairs groan beneath her weight, not in protest, but in recognition.

She pauses.

Did anyone hear?

Then she moves again with uncanny grace and agility. The house that once seemed so familiar now feels like an entirely new world with walls that no longer recognize her. She feels like a version of herself she’d never allowed to exist.

She does not feel guilt.

She feels free.

The door opens. Wind catches her explosion of thunderstorm hair, and bright, blazing eyes reflect the very night itself. She steps out, and the moon remembers what it hasn’t seen in over two hundred years—a true companion.

She used to shuffle down school hallways; now she strides into the night as if it belongs to her.
