Chapter 1
There once lived a boy people called unbreakable. Abducted from his tribe, he was locked in a cage. They damaged his face and cut off his pride.
He was put on display, for the whole town to see. When they regarded him they did so with disgust, their noses stuck up high, his crooked and bleeding.
The paint on his face was smeared and mingled with his open wounds.
A demon, they called him, dark and evil. The signs of the devil branded on his skin.
But he didn’t do much, couldn’t do much. Most of the time, he sat in his cage, the sun burning him.
They had kicked him before, caught him like a wild horse. He had struggled, had tried to fight. But he was a boy, outnumbered by five.
Demon, devil, all the same. Look at his eyes, they’d say, whisper to each other. Look at his demon eyes, sinister and cursing us. It’s the devil, it’s the devil, trying to lead us astray.
He endured it, endured the foreign insults, had no other choice. During the day, the sun beat him, at night it was the white men.
After a while, there was not much of him left. His throat was parched, his body broken.
Demon, demon, devil, devil, they whispered. He’s still alive just to taunt us. Look at his eyes, one swollen, one bleeding. Watch his lips moving, listen to him mutter; he’s cursing us, he’s cursing us. Kill him, kill him before he kills us.
