It was summer
The most awaited season of the year.
Though the scorching sun glaring down at all the people that live in our city, it doesn’t seem to faze our young minds of the Coven of Silver flame.
They begin their day as any other teenager in the mundane, waking up late at night for an intense training session during midnight flicking their hands, lips dry and worn out from chanting all night. With a kiss on the cheek of their parents or loved ones, they began their journey to school, hiding behind masks and answer sheets.
Every kid from this particular clan had been trained from the very moment they were born to control their power within themselves under any circumstances, under the sunlight.
They have been under training since the age of 7 when they usually accidentally discover their power. Training isn’t like usual martial arts, kids have been made to hang upside down in a tree or pushed under the water, or planted under the ground in sleep.
All for one big day.
One big opportunity
The day which will decide their future, this ritual was being followed for years after the war broke between the supernatural world and witches were defeated, the lived ones mourned for the ones who weren’t with them. Mourning turned into something more, vengeance. They wanted revenge, and from that day on, they decided to build an army to full fill their rage against the ones that nearly destroyed their coven.
They have introduced ′ The Supreme test to be a Silver Flame ′. A test to become a warrior for the war. All the kids born on the coven, go through training until 16 and participate in the test during summer, if they pass the test, they get into the army and continue with the training.
Those who don’t pass the test, they have two choices
They have to continue their life as normal mundane, hiding their power all life, have children and raising them for the test Or sacrifice themselves to the all mighty.
What if one desires a life other than the two options listed?
Life isn’t always white and black-grey days do exist. Isn’t it?
Min Hua Chen, a 16-year-old is a young girl brought up by parents who didn’t pass the test, chose the simple mundane life to continue, and are determined to get their daughter into the army, to fulfill their dreams.
Min Hua doesn’t have any other plans either, the training and passing the test have always been her target since she was a kid.
She was 2 weeks old away from her Seventh birthday when she made her broken vase disappear from her parents.
When she was expecting them to be angry or disappointed with her whilst confused about the changes in her body, they were praising, encouraging, and beaming down at her where she was hiding under the bedsheets.
She swore she thought they went crazy for a moment.
But then all clicked in one place, she found that she is a witch.
A witch from Silver flame Coven.
All she had to dream of was to pass the test.
Music was her safe place.
Every time her parents bellowed down on her regarding her lack of effort or hurt her saying she isn’t working hard enough to win the competition or simply she is tired from constant hiding. She finds solace in music.
Music is her first love.
And that’s how she met him.
Xiang Zhao, our Min Hua’s teenage crush.
She plays the piano, he plays the guitar.
They have never been put together for a show, but they couldn’t stay away from each other.
Like everyone in her school, Xiang is also unaware of her true identity.
They kissed once at a party, held hands, went to the cinema together but nothing more than that.
Or that’s what he claims to be.
While Min Hua was secretly developing feelings for him. She began to sneak away from the house to meet him, to go to parties with him, coffee dates, and secret songwriting sessions. The consequences of the next morning at her home were terrible but she was ready to take anything for him.
He was worth it, she thought.
She liked the mundane life.
That’s when for the first time she realized she wanted to have a normal life that does not include running towards a destination that you don’t desire to reach.
Slowly, her lack of interest and efforts concerned her parents, they tried to advise her, threaten her, and increase her training which all went South due to her resistance.
That they learned one thing.
Min Hua Chen is a stubborn girl.
But their prayers were answered, when Min Hua saw a girl and Xiang kissing in the hallways of their school.
When Min Hua confronted him, he said they were a couple, what was going on between him and Min Hua didn’t mean anything to him.
It did break her.
She wanted to be a badass bitch, wanted to challenge him, wanted to make him feel sorry for not choosing her, but it wasn’t in her nature. She opened up to her parents, who motivated her to use the energy and anger in magic to train for the test.
It seemed like manipulation. But Min Hua had no other choice. Mundane life didn’t excite her anymore without him. She continued with daily practice sessions, and mysterious road trips away from the city to deserted places to practice with heavier elements.
That’s how her life has been.
Finally, the announcement had been made.
Young minds have been called to participate in the ‘The supreme test to be a silver flame ’
As soon as the announcement rolled among the magical community her parents had been training, tested her with heavy efforts making sure she had the best guidance and knew all the chants in the book.
And yes the day arrived, Min Hua geared herself for the only test she had been training her whole.
With a kiss to her baby brother, Charlie Chen, Min Hua set out to reach the destination which clearly she didn’t desire.
Well, what to say: Life isn’t always white and black, there are sometimes grey areas that we need to surpass to survive.
