Summary

A historical novel based on the sad but beautiful love story of Marie de Bourgogne, our beautiful princess, and Maximilian I, the last medieval knight of the House of Habsburg, the wealthiest family in Europe in the 15th century, from the perspective of the two princesses Alicia and Cecilia, who were by their side. It is. Marie and Maximilian's great-grandfather was King João I of Portugal, and they were also second cousins, Marie's paternal grandmother and Maximilian's maternal grandfather being brother and sister. In Europe at that time, not only could only Catholics marry each other, but also aristocratic and royal marriages were political marriages decided by the parents, so marriages were often between relatives. And the two protagonist princesses, who are the other story in this story, are also still related, Alicia being a relative of the King of England, the House of York, and Cecilia being the wife of Joan I, Marie and Maximilian's great-grandfather, Filipa from the Royal House of Lancaster in England (Marie's paternal grandmother and Maximilian's maternal grandfather's mother), who was the father of John of Gaunt. The Yorks and Lancasters are also the two families of the famous Wars of the Roses. The story is a bit complicated and will be explained in more detail in the main story later on, but these four people were related in some way.

Introduction

This is the beautiful and slightly sad love story of Princess Marie, known as ‘our beautiful princess’, and Maximilian, the sergeant of the Habsburg family, known as ‘the last knight of the Middle Ages’.

The ’marriage of the century’ between Princess Marie and Maximilian changed the fortunes of the Habsburgs, who at the time were the Holy Roman Emperors, but were broke and headstrong.

Actually, the term ’marriage of the century’ was used for the marriage of Princess Marie’s father, Charles the rash duke of Burgundy , and his third wife, Margaret of York, but there is no doubt that it was her marriage to Princess Marie of Burgundy that laid the foundations of the Habsburgs, later the greatest royal house in Europe. It seems to me that theirs was the ‘marriage of the century’.

The historical anecdote of Princess Marie and Maximilian, together with the story of Alicia and Cecilia, who were Princess Marie’s attendants, closest friends and like sisters, weave a tale that mixes historical fact and fiction.

A must-see for anyone who wants a peek into the world of brilliant medieval European princess tales, where royal bloodlines are intricately intertwined!

I could be happier to share with you, my readers, and the fascinating history of Europe during this period!
