•Chapter 1 - The Beach•

Elodie loves being by the beach. She loved walking across the soft, golden sand, counting the seagulls that went by, and collecting a whole bunch of shells. Her grandad could never come out with her, as in the winter he could get colds SO easily it was quite dangerous. And in the summer, he could get burnt easily too, even if he had suncream on. She usually went for walks on the beach every Friday to escape reality.

Today was Friday. Elodie was happy to go and walk down on the beach. The reason why she lives with her grandad is quite simple, her mother had went her own way across the sea to another island.. Or country. She had one of those small boats that you could just about fit everything you needed in. She left a note when Elodie was just a baby, saying that she wanted to bring Elodie with her, it was just too dangerous. Maria, her mum, had brunette hair, beautiful sky blue eyes, and lovely straight teeth. She loved roses, too.

Elodie got ready in her warmest clothes. She had her wellington boots on, with sparkles consuming them. Granda was drifting off in his leather chair. It had creased with old age. Elodie found a piece of paper and a pen. She wrote in big handwriting;

'Popping down the beach. Won't be long. Make sure to put the wood in the log burner to keep warm. Love ya! - Elodie.'

As she trodded through the door, snowflakes blew in her face. It didn't take her very long to get to the stairs that led down to paradise. As the sea smell drifted across the air, Elodie soon got very cold. But that didn't matter. She had extra warm socks, hats, gloves etc etc. She walked onto the wet sand, due to the rain and snow. A bunch of seashells were all gathered up into one, as if trying to stay warm. Elodie counted only 7 seagulls, usually on a daily basis she could count over 20. She felt the cold air brush against her face. She shivered. She tied her hair up in a messy bun and continued walking.

Minutes later she saw a crab waddle across the sand. It had its pinchers up, as if to say,

"Shoo, nasty human! Shoo, shoo!"

Elodie giggled. Such strange creatures, she thought. She saw another seagull. Surely it was too cold for them. Then she thought of something else.

SHOOT! Granda! He must be freezing to death. She needed to go back.

She huddled all of the pretty, ivory seashells and put them in her auburn duffle coat. A button was found in there, also. Another one to add to her collection!

She trodded back up the now covered in snow stairs. She almost slipped due to the amount of ice consuming them. When Elodie got home, Granda was asleep on his creased leather chair. The log burner wasn't on.

Elodie quickly closed the door and locked it. She lit a candle and its shadow danced in the dark. A car outside roared whilst it raced by. She didn't want to waste any of the logs they had left. Save them for another time.
