Sister
T.W: little bit of a panic attack.
I watched the scenery while the music from my earbuds filled my ears. The trees and the grass were all dancing in the wind. The sun blinded my eyes with its powerful rays, I closed my eyes from the sun and fell into a deep sleep.
“We are here” my uncle announced. I looked around for a moment, it was a new thing to be coming here, this was my parent’s old cabin, they used to come here every summer. “I got the cooler” I heard my older brother yell. “Hey Alister can you get the door for Nick and Ryan,” my Aunt Niki asked. “Sure one sec,” I said while putting my bag down. I went over and opened the door and held it, once they were inside with the bags I went and got our cat, Leo. Once I got to the kennel I got the rest of the bags since there were only 2 left and I got the kennel as well. “Hey, can someone please open the door for me,” I asked “There we go Alister,” My brother Nick said as he opened the door for me. I sat the bags down and went to go open up the kennel’s door for Leo. “There we go buddy,” I said as I pet the fluffy gray kitty. “Hey, Alister can you help me chop up the veggies” asked Aunt Niki. “Sure one sec” I replied. I went over to the kitchen and picked the knife up and started chopping the veggies. In doing so I zoned out then I felt a warm liquid flowing down my hand and a stinging in my hand. I realized what I had done. “Hey, Auntie I need to go get a band-aid” I had said before I had run off. There had always been a little fear of blood ever since I was young I never knew what caused it. I ran my hand under warm water and got a band-aid with my right hand. “Hey, Alister you good” I heard my brother Nick say. “Yeah, just a little accident” “Ok, well the burgers are done and Aunt Niki is working on the veggies for the salad.” He said. Once I got done putting the band-aid on I went out to help Aunt Niki. “Hey, kiddo could you get the plates down,” My Uncle Ryan asked. “Okie Dokie,” I said as I went over there and got the plates. “This is yours and Nick’s plates,” Uncle Ryan said as he handed me two plates. Nick got everyone drinks and we all sat down with our plates. When we got done eating we put our plates in the dishwasher.
“Hey, Alister, Nick can you come here for a moment,” Aunt Niki asked us. “One sec we’re coming,” I said as I and Nick made our way over there. “I think it is time for you two to know what happened to your parents” she spoke softly “your parents were people who believed in second chances,” she spoke but now she had tears in her eyes. “They were going over to London to go on a business trip. While they were on the plane the plane hit an unexpected thunderstorm. The plane went down but they landed on an island and only a few people survived your parents made it in the plane crash. But when they were rescued they had to go to the hospital. While in the hospital the doctors found out that on that island there was a deadly fruit, Ackee, they ate and would kill them during that time your mother was pregnant with your baby sister your mother made it to birth but your mother Katie and the baby died shortly after birth. You woulda had a sister if they survived.” She said tearing up a bit.
“We woulda had a sister,” Nick said with tears running from his eyes. I stayed silent thinking about what it would be like to have a younger sister, a little girl running around looking up at us, wanting to be like us. “I-I need to step outside for a moment,” I said while running to the door. I felt the cool breeze of the ocean hit me. I went behind the cabin and into the forest, I used to play in with my brother. I went to the little spot we made that no one knew about. I went to the basket and pulled out a blanket and a pillow. I sat them against a tree trunk, and I grabbed an old book that Nick and I brought here when we were younger. Anything to get my mind off of what could have happened. What it could have been like with a sister, with a mom and a dad. I sighed that was enough I couldn’t take anymore, so I grabbed a few more blankets and curled up. I went to sleep that night knowing what could have been if they were still alive.
One time in the night I felt someone or something pick me up and pull me close. I was too tired to open my eyes or just register that I was randomly being picked up. I felt them start walking, I didn’t know what direction but somewhere in the time we were moving I fell back to sleep. I felt safe with them.
When I woke up I was laying on my bed at the cabin. I felt a little weight on me. I looked over and saw Leo on top of me. Sleeping peacefully with another cat, a strange cat with patches of black fur on its white fur. The strange thing about it is it had a black dot on its nose shaped like a heart. Then I heard the door open, it was Nick. “Hey bud, how did you sleep?” He asked. “Ok but whose cat is this,” I asked because this is a random cat on me and I only have one cat. “Well when I found you in our old spot the cat was curled up next to you, he would barely let me pick you up to bring you back,” he said as he went over to pet Leo. “Does he have a name or a collar?” I asked. “No, not yet anyway, we were thinking of letting you name it since it won’t let anyone touch it,” he said as he was petting Leo. “I think he should be named patches,” I said while leaning over to pet him. “Where are Auntie and Uncle Ryan,” I asked just releasing that I haven’t seen them yet,” I said. “Well long story short they said since I was 19 and you are 17 we can live by the selves we just need to do is get a job then we can live here officially but they said they would help us.” He said while messing around with Leo’s tail.
“Hey Alister come on I got something to do with you,” He said as he was leaving out the doorway. When I got up I saw him grab something while he went out of the front doorway. I followed him out and saw he grabbed a bouquet of flowers. I came up next to him, he started taking the bouquet apart. He gave me half of the flowers in the bouquet when he had the other half of the flowers, one by one he started throwing them in the ocean. “Hey, what are you doing,” I questioned him. “I thought since we didn’t have a funeral for them we can at least do this for them,” he said. So one by one we throw 30 different colored flowers into the ocean. For the first time in a few days, I felt like I belonged here. Like this will be my forever home.
