1. Seminar

24:00 – Time Left to Takeoff

It was noon. Striding through the hospital’s corridor with his colleague, Aslan discerned a familiar voice; a voice he was accustomed to listening everyday but haven’t heard for a long time. Unconsciously, he drifted towards the auditorium from where the voice was resonating. Entering the space through the main door, he found that a seminar was going on related to cancer.

On the opposite side of the hall, standing next to the podium, he spotted Sarah; the one person and perhaps the most endeared one, missing from his otherwise fulfilled and accomplished life. She was giving a presentation on leukemia in her distinctive accent; her little characteristic pauses and her slightly coarse vocals – which seemed to reflect that her voice was on the verge of breaking any second, but it never did – were some of the few things about her that Aslan could recognize even while asleep.

“Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,” she was addressing her audience, “or simply ALL, is a cancer of white blood cells – cancer in one of its most violent incarnations. As an oncologist, we...”

Sarah suddenly halted her speech as her eyes laid upon Aslan.

She couldn’t believe it, looking at him standing there in front of her unexpectedly after all these years. As for Aslan, it was certainly too much to be gazed at by her.

“We should leave,” Aslan whispered to his colleague: Jo, who was standing beside him, completely unaware of what was going on.

“What happened?” Jo asked in puzzlement, but Aslan had already dashed out of the auditorium.
