Chapter 1
I looked in the mirror at the woman who was looking straight at me. The reflection showed how tired she was from the dark circles under her eyes and the mess on her head that was a disgrace to a woman's hair. "Breathe in, breathe out," I told myself softly.
My eyes moved south, to the sink. I pursed my lips unknowingly and started washing my hands. The past few weeks were pretty exhausting. There was an intruder back in the pack and we suspected that he was a spy. We had not been able to make him talk, but we were sure that he was sent by our enemies. And they would make a vicious plan, if not already, to bring us down.
Being the Alpha's daughter meant big responsibility and even bigger when your pack was of the rare genetics of wolves. The silver wolves they said because our furs were light grey, almost white, and sometimes glisten under the moon. However, the color was not the captivating one among our traits, it was our power. We had it in us to hide our scents from other creatures, even from wolves who didn't belong to the pack. Also, we could heal faster than average wolves and our lifespans were twice as much as others. And my favorite was that we could mindlink any werewolf, and every animal, although they might not listen. It had been very effective only if we were in our wolf forms, but it was what I loved most about the genes. Unfortunately, our numbers were very low considering that our genes only could bear pups with our fated mates, and the chance to meet our mates wasn't very high when we stayed in the pack lands. Only one in every ten members might actually meet theirs in our pack.
Years ago, my grandfather, when he was Alpha, announced that finding a mate was one of our priorities to maintain our numbers and that was why members started traveling around the world, risking their lives to be outside the border, to look for their mates.
Of course, since pack members started finding mates among other packs and we had accepted a few newcomers to join Silver Moon, we were not all pureblood silver wolves anymore. But every one of us was still endangered by others. Rogues, vampires, witches and hunters, you name them, the list still went on. Even, some packs were trying to attack us once.
But that was not what I was handling right now. Yes, the intruder had caused me a migraine due to the number of meetings we had back at home. However, here I was standing in the woman's restrooms of a nightclub in a city about an hour away from home, looking for my brother's mate's little sister, which stressed me out. I sighed at the fact that I needed to start searching for her right now.
I escaped the restrooms, wincing at the loud music that was deafening my ears. The alcohol was too strong for my liking as it assaulted my sense of smell. Great, just being here alone had hurt two of my senses. Not to mention, how I would kill to unsee the sea of people in front of me. How could they be comfortable in each other presence, how could they breathe in the little-to-nothing personal space? And Goddess, the ones on the dancing floor were pretty much grinding at each other.
Humans! I never got them. I was only here because Siera might be too. I had been looking for her in the town for a week. Lucky me, she posted on her social media that she was in one of the clubs tonight. Unfortunately, there were dozens of them. She had been doing this little fiasco since earlier this year when she turned 16.
She dreamed to find her mate then, just like her sister, Dani, who met my brother, Fred, at her sixteenth birthday party. It was a thing that the girls in Silver Moon who turned 16 should have a party where most unmated wolves would come. It made it easier for us to find our mates as soon as possible if they were in the pack. It had been five years since Fred and Dani met and they had been lovey-dovey since. However, unlike them, Siera hadn't met her mate at her party. Now that Fred was 21 and about to be sworn Alpha in the next full moon, and have the mating and Luna ceremonies in the following full moon, they were occupied. Leaving me to be on duty to find the brat.
I never could understand the girl or other she-wolf like her. About 2 years ago, I also failed to find my mate. To say I wasn't disappointed should be a big fat lie. I was devastated. I always wanted my mate to be from Silver Moon. Not a random wolf from another pack, and definitely not human. Because that would mean leaving, and I would never want to leave my family behind. That was why I disliked being outside the pack. I would rather not find my mate if that meant I could stay in Silver Moon.
I looked around and thanked the Goddess that there were no other supernatural beings around meaning no one around could harm me. But that was also my cue to go to the next club cause Siera was not here. I walked around the bar, passing some drunk humans. I would never understand why would they drink more than how much they are capable of. I felt my phone vibrate, I withdrew it from my jeans pocket. Frederik was calling. "Yes?" I asked.
"Have you found her already?" He said through the phone. I rolled my eyes. Not really interested in what he was saying and just wanted to get out of the place. If I had found her, I would call him already. But he already knew that, so instead I said, "Still on it."
"Find her! I know she is fine for now, but I would be assured if you were by her side to keep her safe." I hummed, wanting to end the conversation only for him to add cheekily, "While you're on it, try to also look for your mate. It won't hurt." I ended the call immediately, didn't care if he had more to say. The answer to that was no, I will not search for him here, or anywhere else, except the pack. But everyone knew that he wasn't in the pack ground.
I slipped my phone into my pocket and walked to the exit. Time to move to the next club, hoping Siera would show up there. When I was about to pull the door, someone was already pushing the door from the outside. I was caught off-balance but before falling, a hand caught my back. My eyes were on the ground when I inhaled the most breathtaking scent of my life. It was a mixture of sweet vanilla and rum toned with a hint of tobacco and cedar wood. I breathed out. Focus, Esme! Why would you care, what perfume this man wore for his night adventure?
His hand was still on my back holding me, and I put my hand on his bicep, to pull myself up. Surprised by how toned his muscles were underneath his suit. As I straighten my stand, I finally looked at him. Mesmerized by the most good-looking man that I had ever met. He got that killer jaw and beautifully sculpted nose. His lips were moist that I believed would taste so good. His eyelashes were very long that I wished they were mine and Goddess those eyes were the most attractive blue eyes I had ever seen. I would like to swim in there forever.
"Are you alright?" He asked in a very attractive accent. I hadn't had time to move or say anything when someone suddenly barged in through the door, pushing me slightly. Almost losing my balance, he held the side of my arm with his other hand. I felt the tingles on my skin as soon as his skin touched mine. I was sure my eyes were popping for a millisecond as I realized that I was screwed. I glanced directly at his hand on my skin and he pulled it when he realized what I was looking at. "Sorry."
I nodded as I was pulling myself from him, silently hoping that I was wrong. But as I looked at his face again, finding he was already staring back at me, I declared that I might as well be muted and probably deaf cause I couldn't make up something to say as I heard a word in the back of my mind.
'Mate!'
