Chapter 1
THIRD PERSON'S POV:
"Mommy! Can we please? Please! Buy some chocolates too?" A little girl pestered —tugging on her mom's gown as she pointed at the vendor's showcase.
Muttering lowly —the woman looked down, cupping the girl's face. This was the sixth time in a retail store —and she was still asking for chocolate. "Kiowa, you got a terrible toothache from last time... We had to stay awake all night —Remember?."
Pouting, she crossed her arms in defense. "But that was last year mommy! —This is this year." The woman cracked up a little at what she said.
The vendor looked at the mother and daughter as they exchanged words. Chuckling, she shook her head. She knew the little girl wouldn't stop until she got what she wanted.
Taking pity on the girl. She took out two bars of dark chocolates lowering them towards the child. "Kiowa right?" Kiowa looked up, nodding. "Here. You can have this."
The mother-Lowell blocked her child's hand from receiving it. "No, Thank you, I don't think the money I have on me would pay-".
The vendor cut her off. "It's okay, I know how it is to have a kid, —single mom, right?" Lowell nodded. "I'm a single mom too, let the little one have this, take it as a new year's gift from me"
"But-"
"No but's dear I have to attend to other customers, let her have it just for today" she bent a bit, placing the chocolates into Kiowa's hands —ruffling her hair a bit. "You have a really cute kid."
"Thank you" she turned to Kiowa. "What do you say to the nice lady, Kiowa."
"Thank You!!!.. And happy! Happy! New eve to you!." She said smiling, revealing two sets of dimples.
The vendor smiled. The little girl was just too cute. "Happy new eve to you too sweetheart."
She packed their goods —handing them to the mom. "Thanks for shopping at Donatella's, do hope you visit again."
Lowell smiled politely "Yeah we will, thanks again."
"No probs" she waved at them as they walked out the sliding door.
Kiowa opened the bars immediately after they were out, she just couldn't wait any longer. It's been a long time since she had one.
Hearing a tired groan from her mom, she looked up, seeing as her mom was struggling with the bags at hand. She decided to help. She went closer to her mom, trying to pull out a grocery bag. "Mommy I want to help, remember I told you... I'm a big girl now"
Lowell looked down at her eight-year-old daughter, she was surprised. She thought the little girl was just blabbering when she forced her to talk last night about being treated like a baby.
"Cupcake. This is heavy, I don't want you to hurt your shoulders okay"
Kiowa stopped walking causing Lowell to quiet at the same time, she placed her hands at her waist, tapping slightly her left foot. "M.o.m.m.y! I. Wanna. Help!"
Sighing for almost the hundredth time today, she gave in, pulling out the lightest bag and handing it to her. "Here, but make sure you keep up okay? The place is really busy, if my pace is too fast, and you can't keep up —just yell my name okay?" she placed a high kiss on her forehead.
Bouncing slightly in the happiness she replied "Aye! Captain." She was finally going to help her mom with something.
Walking at the same time. Checking up on her daughter once in a while, she let out a deep breath. She always wanted a better life for her daughter —but saying things out aloud, isn't just the same as doing them. They lived in a poor populated town, but they still thanked the heavens for the ones they had, As most of the folks lived on the streets. They at least have a roof over their head despite the poor structure.
'Beggars can't be choosers, can they?' Lowell thought. She looked back seeing as Kiowa was lacking behind —desperately latching on to the bars in her hands.
"Kiowa! Keep up, The weather's getting cloudy."
