Chapter 1

Sarah sat by Sam’s bedside, tucking him in.

“Did you brush your teeth before getting into bed?”

“Yep,” he said. “Could you tell me the story again?”

“I’ve told you that story a hundred times already.”

“I know, but it’s my favorite.”

“Alright,” she said, sliding next to him. “A long time ago in a faraway land, there was a great kingdom called Whitebridge. To the south lived the Fae who possessed magical powers protecting nature, to the east lived the dwarves who were great craftsmen at weapons, to the west were the elves, wise beyond their years and fierce warriors as well and to the north lived King Edward and Queen Mary, who ruled the whole kingdom in peace.”

“What about the magicians?”

“I was just getting to that,” she said, smiling. “There was also the great group of witches and wizards who used their powers for good and helped to protect everyone. Time for bed.”

“Okay.”

She kissed him on the forehead and walked to his bedroom door, turning off the light switch.

“Mom, you think a kingdom like that was real?”

“Nope, it’s just a simple fairy tale,” she said. “Sweet dreams.”

As soon as she closed the door, Sarah developed a haunted look and walked into the bathroom to wash her face.

“Sarah, just to let you know, I am meeting with my publisher tomorrow,” Rick said. “You think you can take Sam to school in the morning?”

“Won’t be a problem,” she yelled back into her bedroom.

Sarah stared at herself in the mirror, wondering how she had gotten to where she was. She could still hear the hellhounds barking loudly at the door.

Magus stormed into the royal bed chambers, holding the baby, throwing up a protective barrier.

“Humanus impregnito!” he said.

“What is wrong, Magus?” King Edward asked, his eyebrows furrowed.

“It’s Lilith,” he said. “She is here to kill your baby. He must be sent far away.”

“Who will take care of him?”

Magus looked at Sarah, the Queen’s handmaiden, and said, “You. Quickly gather up your things.”

King Edward and Queen Anna stood by as she cradled Samuel in her arms along with a sack of some personal belongings. She watched the two royal parents’ faces as their eyes welled up with tears.

“We have to hurry,” Magus said. “Lillith will not stop until she has him.”

“But what do we do?“ Queen Mary pleaded.

Magus turned to the mirror and looked at his reflection, whispering a few unpronounceable words. As soon as he was finished, the mirror glowed, giving off a shimmering white light that beamed into the room.

“Step into the mirror and you will be safe.”

“But where does it go to?” Sarah said, tearing up, looking at the mirror.

“Another world, another time.”

She turned back, looking at the King and Queen, seeing that they appeared helpless.

“I swear I will take care of your son and treat him like he were my own.”

“Safe journeys,” Magus said, raising his hand.

She stepped into the mirror, feeling like her body and soul were flying through a strange ether. It was the ether between worlds that bonded dimensions together. When she reopened her eyes, she saw herself sitting on a beach looking out over a blue ocean with the sun bright in the sky.
