Summary

This is a story about how a rich man’s son, a poor boy, a jock, a college student, and a small-town wannabe became one of the best bands in the world. How they fought to get to the top, and what they had to deal with at the bottom, starting with family problems, broken dreams, and major pressure from their parents... Sorry, I’m getting ahead. My name is Nancy Stevens, I live in Churchill Ohio, and I’m 14 years old at this time, soon to be 15 in November. If I told you about my family… it would just get complicated. What I can tell you, is that my mom's name is Christy Stevens, and I have an older sister, named Jayden Stevens, but prefers to be called Jay, because it makes her seem ‘cool’. She’s a senior and is always thinking about college. I have a best friend named Emily Williams, and she’s basically a princess, with her family owning half the town, and her brother is a star in everything he does. Oh, yeah, Emily’s brother, Nick Williams. I used to have a crush on him, but I’m over him now, I think? But that’s beside the point, he’s the heir to his dad’s big company, but from what I’ve heard, he doesn’t want it. He wants to make a band, which I think is an awesome idea. And that’s where this story kinda starts off, the auditions.

Chapter 1: The Auditions

I was walking to the Williams house, the song that I wrote in my hand. I hope that I have a good enough voice, I said to myself. I knew I probably wasn’t his top choice for a lead singer, but I hope I make the cut. I closed my eyes, feeling the sun through the trees, listening to the little traffic there was in this small part of the town. I kept walking, not knowing I was at an intersection. A car was coming in hot, and somebody grabbed me and we both fell onto the sidewalk.

I wince as a sharp pain shoots up my leg. The person got up and asked, “Are you alright?!” I looked up and my eyes were met with a set of brown ones. His dirty blonde hair matched his tan skin tone and lean stature. “Are you okay?” He repeated as I grabbed his hand and lifted me up. I winced when pain shot up my leg. I lifted my leg off the ground, then stared at him, realizing who it was. He smiled and I acknowledged his identity. “Nick Williams?” “That’s me, we should head to my house to get you some ice, it looks like you sprained your ankle.” I nodded and looked at the ground where my music lay sprawled out on the concrete.

I started picking them up when Nick started to help. He read my music, then asked, “Did you write this?” I nodded anxiously, picking up the rest of the papers. “You don’t talk much, do you?” “I talk, and I was just on the way to your house to audition for that band you have.” He smiled at me, then put my arm around his shoulder so he could help me walk, and we went to his house.

“Oh my! Nancy, are you okay?!” Their mom rushed to me, and I just smiled through the pain. “Wait mom, how do you know her?” Nick asked, really confused. “Oh! It’s Emily’s friend, come here dear, she’s right inside.” She started to move me but I said, “Actually, I was going to hang out with Nick and audition.” Her smile was wiped from her face as she said, “At least let me help you with your ankle, then you can go to the garage.” I nodded and went inside so Mrs. Williams could bandage me up.

After she got done, I went out to the garage, and I heard singing. Amazing singing. I opened the door to the garage and saw a beautiful girl. She was singing for Nick, it was obvious, and I could tell he was fascinated by her voice. I was too, but deep down, it hurt how he was looking at her, not even noticing me coming in. I sat down by him, him not even glancing at me. After she was done, I clapped, so did Nick. “That was good!” I said, and then she turned to me, and narrowed her eyes. “Good? That was amazing for me! If you know anything about singing, then you’d know.” Nick then stopped clapping, stopped smiling, and asked, “Do you want to go now?” I nodded, gulping nervously. “Hey, it’s okay, just act like I’m not here.” Ha, like that was possible.

I got up to the stand and mic, then took a deep breath. I can do this, I hope...I opened my eyes, not daring to look at the girl sneering at me. I grabbed the keyboard and started playing the melody I made. I closed my eyes, and drifted away from reality, not knowing what I was doing.

I went into my own world, singing like there was no tomorrow. I sang about being lonely, lost in another reality, then someone showing me that I had meaning. They helped me through everything, and soon we were at the top of the world, not daring to look down. I then got to my favorite part of the song, forgetting I wasn’t able to do it just this morning, it is too high and loud for me. I then hit the note and held it. I blasted the keyboard again, jumping up like a rockstar. This was my dream, and it was coming true, like something in a fairy tale.

I opened my eyes, and a bunch of other kids was there, silent. I ended, and they were still silent. Nick was staring at me, sparkles in his eyes, and started clapping. Others joined in, and soon enough the whole garage was full of kids clapping for me. I just awkwardly stood up there, till Joshua went up to me, and said into the mic, “Welcome, our new lead singer!”

I was shocked, while the rest of the crowd cheered even more. Nick then put the mic down, grabbed my hand, and raised it in the air. I just laughed, almost in tears of joy. All these people loved my singing, including Nick, and I was joining his band. I was so excited, I didn’t notice Emily coming into the garage, and narrowing her eyes at me. She stomped down the stairs and just started yelling at me. “Nancy, what the heck?! I thought you were hanging out with me!” She started having a rich girl tantrum, and everyone saw it.

I didn’t know what to do, but Nick went in front of me and started trying to calm his obnoxious sister. “Hey Emily, you’re okay. She’s a part of my band, so you guys can hang out even more, maybe?”She just nodded at the crowd and left, not forgetting a stink eye before she shut the door. Nick’s arm was still around me, and I started to get flustered. This isn’t a fairytale! The whole crowd started making fun, saying Oooooo, or Aww. It got really embarrassing, but he wouldn’t let go of me. Best. Day. Ever.
