Prologue
“I need to have a child! Why can’t anyone understand?” cried Alice, hiding her face in her hands. I feel incomplete. My husband looks at me with pity, and I feel the world is against me.
Helena’s eyes were dark with tears, and her eyes stung with the desire to cry. The heartbreaking sadness that invaded her friend had her throat choked with tears. She wanted to help her; the urge to do so was almost uncontrollable. But she couldn’t; she wouldn’t be giving up anything replaceable; Alicia was asking the impossible of her.
“There are many mothers out there who mistreat their children. They don’t love them and bless them with many children. I, who want to love them with all my heart, can’t have even one.” Alicia continued, tears running down her cheeks. Look at you; you can become a great mother, yet you refuse to have children.
Helena didn’t know what to say. It wasn’t that she didn’t want children; she just didn’t want them at that moment. Her absorbing career didn’t leave her time to even think about it.
Alicia began to cry harder, making the guilt overtake Helena, who felt like running away and disappearing until her friend forgot that she had asked for her help.
“Helena, help me; only you can do it.” Alicia begged, squeezing her hands and looking into her eyes, “Tell me you will; my life depends on you.”
