Fuck The Flashback
I took a deep breath not knowing what I should do. Should I stay home and do nothing all day or go run a few important errands? As tempting as the later sounds, I don’t think I’ll be doing anything today. Snuggling up with an unhealthy amount of snacks, a marathon of a new series on the television, a mountain of blankets, and a tray full of four different strands of pot with a side of rolling papers sounds like the absolutely perfect night just me and my green.
I made a huge pan of chicken fried rice that smelled like literal heaven. A spicy recipe I learned from watching some random ass video online. Of course I cooked it with some THC Butter my friend Savi made because I'm extra as fuck. Almost doing a little dance about trying my new strand Night Walker I rolled into a joint.
I throw my long dark auburn hair into a messy bun on top of my head. Rush over to my hardly full closet to grab a long red t-shirt that reaches past my knees and hides all my curves the hot and also the not. I shrug and take my pants off after I slip the shirt over my head messing up my bun more still not giving a shit. I walk around my small apartment in panties with my long shirt covering it feeling comfortable and ready to start my night.
I pick up my Joint and place it between my plump lips. Grabbing my huge bowl of home-cooked fattiness and march back to my worn down bright yellow pullout couch. Smiling at my own laziness knowing I'm not even going to pull my bed out tonight I turn on my TV and finally sit down. Excited to begin my perfect night. I light my joint feeling my body relax into the couch. Before I even have the chance to finish my joint “What the fuck?” I yelled out dropping it burning myself in the process jerk myself up as fast as humanly possible after a huge boom rang through my little apartment shaking everything off my walls. The noise boomed again rattling my brain so hard everything went black as my body crumbled to the ground.
I open my eyes with wonder, my hand unconsciously touches my right upper thigh. The dime size burn slightly raised causing a small bump under my clothes. Surprised my dream was a flashback that happened 480 years ago. The day the Immortal Bomb went off. I stretch my arms out grabbing the tall grass in my hands enjoying the quietness of my favorite meadow that’s located in the very back of my village’s land. I sit up and rub my hands over my face feeling the huge almost white scar that starts on my left cheek bone under my left eye that is lightly glossed over with a blue tint and runs all the way down my face and neck, disappearing into my shirt. The world was so simple and brilliant at the same time. How could star dust change the world so drastically? Rip over our planet and cause complete chaos yet filling everything and everyone with life. “Fuck it” I slowly stand up and stalk to the village. My peace now crushed by the past I still try to forget. Shaking the thoughts away I head towards my home.
I march my way up the almost unnoticeable path to the beautifully simple village. No electricity, outhouses instead of bathrooms. Only naturally heated communal springs for bathing. Houses built on and around the huge ancient sequoia trees with huge vines being the main structure. Our houses are why we are called Vine Village. “Verah! Verah?” I heard Bae yell jerking my head in her direction my smile grows until I see how pissed she is my plump lips turning into a frown. Her dark brown hair and even darker eyes looking lethal against her tanned skin.
I see her urgency so I jog her way. “What is it, Bae?” I say as I reach out and touch her face with one hand and shoulder with the other in our clans greeting. She reached her hand up and touched my right cheek and left shoulder. We both put gentle pressure showing we have much love for one another.
“Rein and Kay just got out of a meeting. They looked really heated. Rein said she needs to talk with you. Now if you can.” Her concerned look made me promptly nod and run in a flash towards Rein’s tree.
“Rein?” I yelled at her huge carved window giving her warning of my arrival. Bending my knees and jumping 18 feet up to her front post with ease still amazed by my body’s unimaginable capabilities after the Immortal Bomb crashed into our planet.
The hatch door swung open and all I could see is bright blue eyes and even brighter blonde hair. Her pixie-like figure towered by my small but firm body. I smile down at her and touch her face and shoulder in an embrace. Her bright blues scanned my bright green but mismatched eyes.
She greets me back as she starts talking being straight forward like usual. "Kay was here. She just left, but Verah we have a problem." She sighed her face turning weary as she dropped her hands and jumped down from her post. I closed her hatch and jumped after her. Landing next to her, I take a moment to observe her stressed form. I sighed knowing something is really wrong for her wisdom to show through her young face. She's three hundred and sixty years old and still looks no older than 25 just like every single living person that is not an actual child, an underling.
"I honestly don't even know where to begin so just try to follow my jumbled mess." She paused in her rant to make sure I was paying attention. After giving her a small nod sitting my ass on the hard ground looking up at her, giving her my full attention, she continued. "Kay's village has one hundred and forty nine people living there but that's including seven underlings. Out of the hundred and forty two grown only fifty three are men, and thirty eight of those men are already paired. The remaining 15 men are all under one hundred." She stops talking for a second to let me gather my thoughts. I rub my hand down my face feeling only slightly guilty for already knowing this information.
"Fuck, that's even less men than we have. We're at seventy six men and they're all paired right?" I ask watching her nod immediately.
"Kay is getting desperate. Her women are getting restless and jealous of all the soul pairs. Most of them are over the age three hundred. Their loneliness is growing and other women as companions only fill the void for so long. We need the other half of us." We both sigh completely feeling the loneliness. "The number of underlings are dropping so fast and now there is panic all over, even the Mountain Village is getting restless. There is a meeting for all Monarchs tomorrow for a discussion before it is taken to the people for a vote. I need your advice and by advice I mean your vote. You should be the village Monarch. No offense Verah, babes but you're most likely the oldest living person alive and one of the wisest" She crouched her tiny but lethal body to my level on the ground. I gave a nod without hesitation although I felt my eyes brighten. "The discussion is about having every single unpaired male travel village to village while they attempt to find their soul pairs." We look deep into each other's eyes hers shining with hope, mine shining with pure anxiety. I fucking knew this was coming. Was my first thought. My hand is immediately and unconsciously touching the scar on my face. I clear my throat and quickly drop my hand. Rein's eyes follow the movement.
"Vote yes. It's the best choice. Our village is also getting restless. I appreciate you involving me in the choice but you fucking know the right way. You don't need my old senile ass giving you advice." Her eyes snapping back to my eyes with pity and nervousness. I catch my frustrated sigh in the back of my throat at her lack of confidence in herself being Monarch of the village. I laughed it off as I stand up. Giving her a wink I walk away needing to think shit through. "What the fuck?" is all I can muster as I saunter home needing a fat pipe full of my best bud. "Damn, I need to smoke."
