Summary

"So what are we?" "Friends." Silence. "Friends? Even after last night?" Sigh. "Last night was...a mistake. We were both...emotional and...you have a girlfriend. I have a boyfriend too and...it was just a spur of the moment. So yeah. Friends. " Nod. "Of course. We are...friends. Sure." Camryn and Aaron have been best friends for ten years, ever since Aaron moved in next door when they were both nine. But it must have been a little glitch, a little mistake in the innocence of children, to mistake the instant liking for simple friendship. Now twenty one and each committed, it becomes even harder and harder, especially when Camryn wants to remain just friends.

Prologue; In My Dreams of Us

"So, is there something you want to say to someone? Something you have never said to them? Is there something you have to say?"

Aaron sighed, then nodded, feeling his eyes moisten up. It has already been five years. Five years of trying to push her away. And all thoughts of her. But he couldn't think of anything else to say. He nodded as the camera turned on him again, then sucked on his lips, the first tear dropping as if on cue.

"When I saw you heavily pregnant...I wished that child was mine. When you walked down that aisle, I hoped to be the man in front. After that night...that night, that kiss...it was my first and...the very last. And when you said you wanted to stay friends, I shattered. Not like I don't want to be friends with you, but...I hoped it would stop being the only thing that defined us. I hoped at some point, I could...love you. It was getting too heavy to carry on my own. And in my dreams of us...in my dreams of us, we are perfect. And I am that man whose hand you would never let go of."

The interviewer nodded. "That is some..heartfelt message. Who is this person?"

Aaron grabbed a tissue and dabbed at his eyes, his lips parting as he tried to breathe. "It...is for my best friend. My best friend of eighteen years."
