The snow falls on a cold winter’s day. The air whistles telling dark secrets. The moon smiles down on a seemingly sleepy city. It’s around midnight about 12:03 to be exact. An occasional car will pass by but besides that, the city is completely silent. A man steps out of his car having finished a long day in the office. He walks up the sidewalk passing building after building scrolling on his phone and looking at missed calls and messages. He doesn’t notice the shadowy figure behind him, he continues to walk stopping at a particularly big building. He walks passed the greeting desk not once looking up from his phone.
He continues to walk through the building stopping at the elevator. He looks up to press the up button when yet another message comes through. The man seems tired but he doesn’t let that stop him from finishing his work. The elevator dings giving him the signal to continue walking forward, He presses floor 13 again looking up but not looking around. He sends a response and clicks his phone off. Sighing he leans back against the cool wall trying to clear his mind. Maybe... I’ll give her a call he thinks to himself as he closes his eyes.
The elevator dings and he makes his way down a long hallway of closed doors. Stopping at an apartment he reaches in his pocket grabbing a set of keys. Before he can unlock the door he hears a sweet whistle down the long hallway. He looks up and around but he can’t seem to find the source of the music. The song continues, and the man gets distracted by the sound he doesn’t notice how the sound is getting closer.
“Hush... Hush... keep your pretty mouth shut.” the whistle stops only to be continued by those lyrics. A dark figure emerges from behind the man.
“Do you live alone Mr?” A voice says. the man turns around to find a boy around 16 standing behind him, The man turns around and notices the boy for the first time.
“Isn’t it a little late for you to be out young man?” The man asks him. The boy pulls a glinting object from his back pocket. The man sees the knife but doesn’t react.
“Okay little boy, what are you gonna do with that hmm?” The boy doesn’t answer but instead just moves closer. The man takes a step back.
“Alright what kind of sick joke is this?” He stutters as the boy gets closer. The boy lifts his head up and the man immediately notices his bright blue eyes. Colder than any winter day. Frozen with no emotion behind them. The man knew he was going to die. He didn’t scream. He had no time too. The last thing that man saw was the eyes of a broken little boy.
