Chapter one
‘Roger, wait up!’ I call to him. I am chasing him through the woods. He is running in the direction of the meadow. It is not a secret place, but it is our get away. It is quiet, beautiful and not widely know. We are there a lot, just the two of us.
Usually we meet there so we the chance that we’d been seen together would be smaller. But today, Roger asked me to meet up at the edge of the woods. It’s weird and I am on my guard. The woods are not save for one to walk alone. There are animals, but also creatures called Whispers. It is not known what they can do because no one who survived an attack was able to tell the tale.
It doesn’t feel right. Roger would never deliberately put himself in danger, let alone me. I am worried something has happened to him. He is acting not like himself.
Suddenly Roger stops in his tracks. Like he bumped into a fence. But there is nothing there. I finally catch up to him. We are standing at the edge of the meadow. ‘Shall we go to…’ I start. But before I can finish my sentence Roger has taken off again. What the hell is happening? I don’t want to lose sight of him. Even though I tire of this game of his, at least I hope it is intended as a game, I don’t want to be left alone in the woods. He turns left between the trees and suddenly I don’t see him anymore. He is gone. It is as he has vanished, gone up in smoke. I stop in my tracks. I want to go on but I can’t. It feels like the ground has taken a hold of my feet. I start to panic. ‘Roger, where are you? Talk to me! Help me, I’m stuck! Roger? Roger!’
