Prologue: All I Have Left

Logan

I had never felt so much pain. I sat there on my knees in the woods holding the dead body of the woman I loved, hell maybe the only one I have ever loved. Kayla’s blood was soaked into the ground and I could feel it seeping onto my hands.

“Kayla…” I moaned. “Come on Darlin’ please wake up for me.” I begged.

As I sat rocking her I was suddenly made aware of a small cry that to my own enhanced hearing was so loud and shrill. It was a cry that set every instinct I had into overdrive. I laid Kayla down and quickly ran toward the car. I ran to the rear passenger side door and jerked the it open.

There in the backseat was a car seat that held a small, perfect little angel.

She was crying so hard wanting someone to hold her, probably for her Mama, her small little face was turning red.

“It’s okay baby girl,” I cooed as I quickly unhooked her from the carrier and lifted her up. “I’m here,” I held her to me and kissed her head full of dark hair. “Daddy’s here baby.”

As I held her she began to calm. I held my child, my daughter close and breathed in her sweet scent. She was safe at least.

The baby raised her little hands in the air and I saw it. A cut on the left side of her right wrist. It wasn’t bleeding anymore thanks to what little healing she may have inherited from me but it was still there.

“Victor.” I growled. How dare he, how could he? She was a baby, she was his niece and he killed her mother and then to add insult to injury he fucking hurts her.

“I’m gonna kill that fucker.” I promised. Sensing my temper rising my daughter began to cry again.

“Shhhh,” I hushed. “It’s okay. “ I gently put her back in her seat and made a plan. There was a little old woman that had always been nice enough to Kayla and I. Maybe she would watch the baby until I got all this bullshit taken care of.

“Don’t worry baby girl,” I said. “Daddy is gonna kick Uncle Victor’s ass.”
