Chapter 1 She looks like Miss Elena!

Chloe was woken up by a knock and looked at the little girl who was sleeping beside her. She smiled and ruffled her hair. The knock became louder. She sighed and slowly climbed out of bed.

"Chloe Spencer, open the damn door right now!" A loud and shrill voice was heard.

"I am coming," Chloe grumbled and went on bare feet to open the door. She opened the door to reveal a fat woman wearing a flashy red dress. She was wearing black stilettos and heavy makeup.

It was the landlady. "It's been a seven months now and you haven't paid your rent! I cannot tolerate this anymore. I want my money within a five days! Thank me for being merciful."

The woman harumphed and spun on her heels. She began to walk away arrogantly with her head held high. Chloe sighed heavily. What was she going to do? She also had to pay Anna's school fees.

"Was that Mrs Rodney?" A childish voice was heard. Chloe turned around and smiled at the little girl who was still wearing her pyjamas. Her hair was dishevelled. She looked cute right now.

"Morning Anna," Chloe patted the little girl's head.

"Was she here for her money?"

Chloe's smile widened. "You are always serious. Don't worry. You need to get ready to go to school right now."

" But I don't want to go to school."

"You are going to school, young lady so start getting ready."

" But everyone there hates me!"

" No more excuses," Chloe said as she dragged the sulky Anna into the bathroom.

Chloe had been the one who was looking after her little sister after the death of her parents. Her parents were murdered, leaving them penniless. None of their relatives wanted to take them in so they had to fend for themselves.

She was forced to drop out of school and look for a job. Strangely, she got fired at every job after every week of working. Currently she had found a job to work as a bartender at a bar and she deeply hoped that she won't get fired. It wasn't too easy for her to find that job.

Chloe helped Anna prepare to go to school and hailed a taxi. She climbed into the taxi with Anna and told the driver where she wanted to go and closed her eyes. She felt so stressed.

"Are you okay, young miss?" The driver asked. "You look so exhausted."

One might mistaken her for a madwoman. Her hair was dishevelled and she had dark circles under her eyes. She was wearing a pair of slippers.

"Yeah. I am okay," Chloe replied without opening her eyes. Soon the taxi came to a stop. "We are here."

Chloe paid the driver and got out of the car. She fixed Anna's uniform. "Be a good girl at school okay? Stay out of trouble."

Anna nodded and Chloe smiled. "Good. I will come and pick you up soon."

Chloe watched Anna disappear from her sight. She looked at her watch. She had four hours before she went to work.

It was cloudy and windy. It seemed like it was going to rain anytime soon. Chloe rubbed her chin. Maybe she could go to see Edward. He had not been answering her calls for the past few weeks. She missed seeing that kind and handsome man. He was the only one who had been showing some care after the death of her parents.

With her hands in her pocket, she looked for a taxi and went to Edward's apartment. She walked slowly towards the door. She had just raised her hand to knock the door when she heard weird muffled sounds. Her eyebrows furrowed and she opened the door. It was not locked.

What she saw made her freeze, clearly not believing her own eyes. Her boyfriend was screwing an unfamiliar woman.

"Edward?" Chloe said in a small voice, her whole body was trembling. "How could you do this to me?"

Edward stopped doing what he was doing and looked at Chloe in surprise. "What are you doing here?"

"Is this why you are not answering my call?" Chloe asked, with tears streaming down her cheeks. "Because of this wh*re."

"Watch your mouth peasant. Who is she darling?" The woman asked as she looked at Chloe's clothes in disgust. "How can she just walk in someone's room without being given permission?"

Edward quickly slipped into his clothes. "She is my ex girlfriend."

Chloe was stunned. "I am now your ex girlfriend?"

"How can you have such a bad taste in women?" The woman clicked her tongue.

" I have been wanting to tell you this Chloe. I am now engaged."

Chloe took a few steps backwards. She felt the whole world spin. How was this possible? "Tell me that it's a joke. Didn't you promise to marry me? Am I not enough?"

" Look Chloe. My feelings for you were not of love. I just felt pity for you."

Every word he said made her feel more depressed. " What?" She croaked.

"I never really saw you that way. You are not the type of girl I would want to spend my whole life with. Look at Lora. She is way better than you in all aspects. She is rich, beautiful, intelligent, bold. But you are not anything like her..."

Chloe felt her heart squeeze. She felt suffocated. She did not want to linger and listen to his hateful words anymore. The Edward in front of her was no longer the Edward she knew. Chloe ran out of the room.

"Where are you going Chloe? We can still be friends!" Edward shouted.

Tears ran down her cheeks and her vision became blurry. It was windy and cold outside. However Chloe did not feel cold at all. She felt empty. Lightning flashed and it began to rain. Did she really deserve this because she wasn't beautiful and rich? Chloe felt her body weaken. Soon her clothes got drenched and they stuck to her like a second skin. She did not care. She cried for a long time. She kicked a stone in frustration.

Right now she looked exactly like a madwoman. She screamed and cursed loudly. She cursed Edward for being double faced. She cursed the world for being so cruel. People looked at her for a brief moment before continuing to do what they were doing. A woman and a little girl walked past her. "Mommy, look at that madwoman! Should we help her?"

The woman dragged the child. "Just keep on walking. We can't help everybody whom we meet."

Chloe pulled her hair roughly. "I am not a madwoman, dammit!"

She knelt down and continued to cry. Her whole body shook not because of the cold but because of sorrow.

"I hate you Edward! I hate you!" She cried. Time passed as she remained fixated on the spot. She did not want to stand up but she knew that she had to go and pick up Anna.

She stood up slowly and began to walk across the road in a daze. Chloe did not notice the black car that was speeding along the road. The car honked but it seemed like it was rather too late.

Chloe eyes widened in horror. Was she going to die? The brakes of the car screeched and it stopped only a few inches away from her. Her heart was beating erratically at this minute and she remained still.

The car honked but she could not move even an inch. The door was opened and a tall stoic looking man got out. "What's wrong with you? You almost got hit! Are you drunk?"

Chloe snapped out of her daze. She felt intimidated by the man's stare and quickly apologized to the man. "I am really sorry. I was not looking at where I was going. I won't do that again."

The stone cold man only nodded curtly and went back into the car. The car looked very expensive and she could tell that the owner of the car was not to be trifled with. Chloe immediately moved away.

She watched the car drive away. She took out her phone and it was wet. She cursed under her breath. She needed to pick Anna right now.

In the black car...

"Boss, that woman I almost hit looked like Miss Elena," the driver who had been the one to talk to Chloe said.

The man in the backseat only hummed.

"Should I check her background?" The driver asked.

" No need to bother," the man answered. The driver looked in the mirror to see the man looking expressionless as usual. His eyes were closed. The driver sighed. His boss had always been cold and intimidating. It only got worse after the disappearance of Elena Spears. He only hoped that Elena would come back very soon.

When Chloe arrived at Anna's school, the rain had stopped. The school was almost empty. She met Anna's teacher, Mr Reese.

"Anna has just left on her own a few minutes ago," Mr Reese said. Chloe sighed. She was late again.

"Are you okay Miss Chloe?" Mr Reese asked as he looked at her messy appearance. "You don't look okay to me."

Chloe forced out a smile. "I am fine. I did not expect that it would rain so I did not come with an umbrella." She sneezed loudly at that moment. She gave him an apologetic look. Chloe was sure that she was going to have a fever now.

"If you have anything that is troubling you, feel free to tell me. I am a very good listener," Mr Reese smiled.

Chloe nodded. "Does Anna have any friends now?"

The teacher shook his head. "Your sister has been cold and distant to everyone. She doesn't even want to talk to me. She has been getting involved in fights lately. I am really worried about her."

" What fights? She never told me about any fights."

" Well, the kids she fight with always end up getting injured but she never gets even a scratch."

Chloe ran a hand through her wet hair and sighed.

"You really need to talk to her. She has to stop acting like this and socialize with other kids." Mr Reese said.

"What about her class performance? Is she performing well?" Chloe asked worriedly.

" She spends most of her time sleeping in the class but quite surprisingly she does perform well. She is a smart kid," Mr Reese replied with a smile. They talked for a few more minutes before Chloe decided to go home. She also needed to go to work.

She opened the door slowly. Anna was sitting on the couch watching TV. Chloe entered the room and went to where Anna was sitting. "Change your clothes first, Chloe. You are dirtying the house."

" Fine," Chloe said and went to take a short bath. She wore on some dry clothes and went back to the living room. "How was your day at school? I am sorry that I did not manage to come on time."

Anna turned to look at her. "It was awful as usual and let me guess... Edward dumped you?"

"How do you know?" Chloe looked at her in surprise.

" Well it's written all over your face," Anna answered nonchalantly. "I don't feel bad at all. He really did not deserve you."

Chloe shook her head. "You don't understand. Edward was the one who had been treating me well after the death of our parents. He was willing to help me whenever I got into trouble."

" Still I don't think that he deserves you. Brian told me that he likes me," Anna said looking a bit shy.

" Oh my, someone is blushing," Chloe teased her. Anna's face turned red. " So what did you say to him?"

"I broke his arm," Anna answered with an innocent look.

Chloe, "..." She did not expect to hear this kind of answer. "You what?"

"I am joking. I mean I almost broke his arm and he ran away crying like a little baby," Anna smiled revealing her little white teeth.

Chloe felt a chill run down her spine. "You little devil." Was the only thing she could say. What was she going to do with her?
