American Kingdom
"German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed by the Gestapo for his involvement to kill Adolf Hitler. Yet, before his death, he penned these words; …so to utter the word of God that the world will be changed and renewed by it. It will be a new language perhaps quite non-religious, but liberating and redeeming – as was Jesus’ language; it will shock people and yet overcome them by its power; it will be the language of a new righteousness and truth, proclaiming God’s peace with men and the coming of the Kingdom. This was his vision. American Kingdom appears to broach this ideology by asking questions that should be resounded from the sacred desks of the clergy, questions that stimulate healthy conversation not mired down by religion. In my estimation American Kingdom attempts to avoid the idea of religion in that religion is a binding force, forming obstacles to men’s path to God. The author sets the readers free to reimagine a world where the word, the gospel, can be received by nonchristians as well as Christians for God so loved the world! I particularly enjoy her perspective of pitting two dynamics, Yin and Yang, if you will, of peace of the gospel and preparation for war. The battle-worn protagonist offers readers her baptism by fire under fire at the hands of the enemy. We gain valuable insight into the mechanics of military thought and action as the plot unfolds. We begin to visualize her entrance into a hidden aristocracy. There are whiffs of wit and humor that softens the suspense and sensual teasing. Did I say teasing? I’m no stranger to teasing, but the author’s teasing introduces us to a dimension between teasing and fulfillment. Imagine being throttled along a path of release, stalled, and left in wonderment. American Kingdom is an enjoyable read that reaches a new frontier into man’s quest to know himself, whence he came, and where he will spend eternity. After completing the story, I believe there is more to come to satisfy our hunger."

"A naked view of the world from the opening chapter, and soon enough, the horseshit flies. The locations and characters are engaging. The beginning is well-paced in Charleston. Molly, the lead character, has a military background revealed without halting the story flow. Nasty stuff happened in Afghanistan, and it is described in visceral detail. However, what drives the story forward are the two married characters Molly meets on a bike tour she leads. Brian and Marion, who believe that The Kingdom of God on earth is ready for action, and quoting the Bible, urge Molly to become a trooper in the army of the Lord. A different engaging read. Reviewed to chapter 25."
