Chapter 1
The noble dark is very different from evil
This is where my story begins, an experience in that abandoned cabin. The events evergreen in my memory.
I live on a dead end, rural, private road west coast of USA. Things weren’t always this bad for me or my family, but they definitely took a turn after my dad died. Mom couldn’t afford to keep us in the fancy neighborhood after daddy sailed. I have seen times when streetlights shining in the mist make streets seem insulated and otherworldly. Pavements glisten and footsteps sound distant. The only signs of life seem to reside behind the curtained windows of homes and the occasional chanting in the abandoned cabin only I seem to be able to hear.
The abandoned cabin stood there, with fog rising to the sky. Lights flickered being the only light in the dark….The fog dragged a cold breeze that sent chills up my spine. I gulped and strolled into the cold night. As I approached the cabin, the door slowly opens and a shadow steps towards me.
I turned on my flashlight. As the bright light fell, the shadow I saw a couple of seconds ago was gone. My mouth went dry, I could hear blood rushing in my ears, heart pounding like a drum in my chest, fast and hot in anticipation of something – anything, perhaps death.
I steeled myself carefully, yet fearfully walked into the house all too aware of the creaking boards, eerie sounds and something of a presence that seemed engulf the house making it seem as tho it were a living being. I cringed with each step I took, but it didn’t sway my decision to make it to the bedroom. Halfway there a shadow flickered at the corner of my vision. I stood there with my feet glued to the ground unable to move. As a strong wind swept across the room, I caught a scent lingering in the air. Sandalwood? A shiver curled through the hairs on my back and cascaded down my backbone. It was all I could do no to hurl myself towards the door that ushered me into the house.
Hello! I heard. I swiveled on my heels, looking for just the right words to explain my situation, as my gaze met his, my fear was momentarily forgotten. He was fair, almost pale. His unfathomable blue eyes contrasted with his light toned face. His eyes were deep and expressive, where you could get lost if you stared long enough. His boyish smile and the welcoming air that seemed to surround him flaunted his modesty and humility. Realizing I had zoned out a bit I tuned back to the one sided conversation just in time to catch his name. Katla he said, a strange name indeed I replied. He breathed out a chuckle and repeated his name Katla Shadow, I smiled but of course courtesy demanded that I introduce myself too, and so I did Adira Glass. There must be moments in your life where you look back and think to yourself " I wish I had done things differently or had had reacted to a certain situation differently" this is that moment for me. Chained to a wall, in yet another abandoned home somewhere in the woods with zero hopes of being found. I smiled at the darkness wishing I had done things differently and cursing the day I let my curiosity take me on this journey.
Not to worry I won't bore anyone with unnecessary details we'll get right back to the story.
