About KenHutter
My life in 1500 characters:
From 🇦🇺
At 8yo my family moved around, couch-surfing + a caravan park. Missed most of a year of school and self-studied uni level STEM.
Back at school, I stood out and was bashed up 3-4x/wk for 5 years. Teachers never cared about the giftedness or the violence. From 10yo they made many threats to jail me for truancy.
At 14yo I had to go to a dumping ground school (for truancy + ambushing a bully), an unofficial reject bin constantly taking in write-offs, like a zoo but kids were inside the wire with the animals and we survived by becoming animals too, a prep school for juvie and prison. I saw that as my likely future, and it might have been, but the crazy school was shut down, and I fought my next school’s expulsion attempts long enough to sit exams to get into a sandstone uni.
I majored in STEM, dreaming of a job at a bank, hoping for a stable life. But I graduated into the GFC, couldn’t get interviewed, and saw it wasn’t so stable. I backpacked for years, content writing, teaching the locals English and myself 🇯🇵 + 🇹🇭. That led me back to 🇦🇺 for a Master’s in Linguistics. Then I kept tutoring English back in Tokyo, all 1-to-1 to adults. My students come from all walks of life, many of them “interesting”.
Since corona this job’s been online so I’m a digital nomad again. I hate people dictating what’s meant to be good for other people, so seedy areas make me happy + I like edgy locations in general. And my students like seeing me in those places.
