Romeo and Juliet – the gay sci-fi version
"“They Just Don’t” is different than many of @PostScriptRegrets other offerings, but it is no less emotionally impactful and romantically touching. There is quite a bit of interesting world-building to support the story in the background, and the politics set up the book’s main external conflict. Just as I have come to expect from all of Mal’s work, the characters are richly defined, and I am effortlessly pulled not just into Mal’s fictional world but into the hearts and minds of the lead characters. What unfolds is a dramatic romance filled to the brim with angst, rivalry, tenderness, and devotion. The story begins with the more classic enemies-to-lovers trope, but Mal always has a way to turn these classic tropes around and mold them into new forms. As the book reaches its climax, I understood that this is nothing short of a unique take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with a story of forbidden love wrapped in subterfuge and political intrigue spiced with the unique elements and challenges of a gay romance. If you’re looking for gay Romeo and Juliet, then look no further. As always with Mal, the characters and their personalities are the absolute driving force of this book. I am drawn into their passions, their fears, and their conflicted thoughts as their attraction turns into an almost reckless devotion that crashes headlong into their sense of duty and family. I cried during this book. I raged during this book. I laughed and cheered during this book. It brings out every emotion. These are characters who will always stay with you and whom you will be able to picture clearly in your mind long after the final chapter. I will smile when I think of my Baby Raven, my Sunlight Chaddy, and of course, my beloved Firebird (whom I still plot to get into my bed). That is how real these characters became for me, and I know they will do the same for others. It is Mal’s gift for character, his defining achievement as a writer, which is showcased over and over again in his work. The overall smut in this work is less than in most of Mal’s books, at least until the later chapters where there is a sudden spice explosion. This is not a critique, as the lack of description leaves us simmering with the raw emotions and desires, and it demands that our imagination fill in the rest. It’s this element, I think, which clearly defines this book into the Romance rather than the Erotica genre. It is a love story at its core, and it keeps us questioning the outcome of the protagonists’ relationship until the final pages. It is an achievement I want Mal to feel proud of, and it is worthy of being on the list of everyone who loves gay romance, sci-fi romance, or just an epically dramatic love story between two young men who are willing to stand against all odds in order to be together. It became my go-to story for weeks, and I am sad it’s over. I will be eagerly looking forward to the rumored sequel. "

The characters are so interesting you feel like you know them, the backstory looks so suspenseful it keeps you on the edge of your seat and don't get me started on the smut content i drink it up like honey water. This book does not have allot of chapters yet but its already one of best novel i am currently reading 😉."
