A Masterpiece

This is a story that gets better and better every time you read it. You join Maka on her journey through and hell and back, and you notice more and more details every time you reread it. The worldbuilding is phenomenal, and the attention to detail brings the Vegas streets haunted by the dead to life. The pacing is excellent and really demonstrates a thorough understanding of build-up and anticipation.

The characters are extremely well fleshed out (even those who lose some flesh). We immediately feel connected, grasping for the humans within the world of the dead. They each bring something to the table and teach us something about life after death. Black*Star teaches us about the weight of the world on our shoulders. Harvar teaches us about finding meaning and purpose even when there doesn't seem to be any. Maka teaches us how to find strength within ourselves and rise to our destinies. And Soul teaches us how to love again.

The well crafted sentences chase after the reader even long after we think we should be safe, like insatiable zombies. I find myself haunted after reading it every time. This story will linger with you long after you close the tab.

A Stunning Author

As an author, I cannot recommend rainingdownhearts enough. Her ability to turn a phrase, to build a world, to paint a picture are almost unparalleled, and this story is a perfect example of her mastery of prose. It demonstrates her understanding of plot, of the importance of balance, of the way to build up to something, of the delivery of emotionally powerful material. As heartwrenching as this story is, I absolutely recommend it and all her work.

Hands Down, a Great Fic

I am a huge fan of superheroes, and I love Soul Eater, so a blend of the two absolutely drew my attention. I am always very grateful for clever interpretations of powers into new worlds and new dimensions, and I found this to be an excellent explanation of theirs. They translated well and represented the powers in canon without being too heavy-handed. The cast of characters was very well done, and it was great to see so many interesting roles for different people. I'm especially fond of Kid as DA, but they are all well-thought out.

There were a lot of potential superhero themes that could have been explored, and I was a bit disappointed to see that they were not. There were many different avenues that could have been explored, but the plot is solid nonetheless.

The final fight scene was very well executed, and we really fear for the characters. The stakes feel high and the payoff is therefore well earned. I appreciate the ending, and feel that there is a lot of potential for a sequel for further exploration. I look forward to seeing what might happen in this expansive world!

A Haunting Story

This story is just phenomenal. The prose style is haunting and lyrical, capturing a sense of uneasiness and dreamlike fugue as it progresses deeper and deeper into the mystery. The inner turmoils of the characters that led them to where they are now are all complex and well-fleshed out, creating a cast of realistic nuanced characters. Their struggles and their triumphs are that much more satisfying because of it. The plot is dark and heavy, and while its slower pacing may not be for everyone, it manages to evoke both the feelings of a dream as well as the realism of teenagers who are struggling in their lives. The final climax is breathtaking, and it is wonderful to see the story wrapped up so neatly.

A Steampunk Adventure

I had the great pleasure in watching this story unfold and I can't stress enough how much of a joy that was. I was really impressed by the slow, careful pacing and the well-fleshed out cast of characters. The author did a phenomenal job of setting the scene and carefully researching the time period for a consistent narrative and mood. Her turn of phrase was excellent, and there were many lines that were extremely well-crafted. Overall the plot was exciting and stimulating. There were a few plot threads that I felt could have been tied in better, but they lend themselves very nicely to be expanded upon in a sequel. The details of the 'monsters' and magic were horrific and haunting, and I absolutely recommend this story.
