A True Alpha and a Strong Female
"It was a fine story, far more into the urban fantasy than romance, but enjoyable nonetheless. Garrick's pack has been brutally attacked by Darius' pack, and when he goes after him, he finds Tory, a brave she-wolf who has been trying to rescue the females and she's gotten herself in trouble. Tory happens to be his mate, so pursuing Darius needs to be left for later. As Garrick and Tory investigate, they discover there is something darker behind Darius' actions, something that'll endanger their very own existence. The story has all the mystery ingredients I enjoy in a good urban fantasy, and the deeper the characters go into the rabbit hole, the darker and more dangerous the situation is. I don't want to reveal much, but what seemed like a simple conflict between packs turns out to be far more. One of the things I liked the most about the story is that Garrick is a true alpha. I'm not friends with the term for several reasons, one of which is that it's completely wrong, but I am glad that Garrick was not the typical toxic alphahole who uses violence and brutality to make his followers submit. He's a sensible, patient and firm leader who guides his pack by setting the example. He's also a loving and caring mate to Tory. This is a way more realistic wolf behavior than the aggressive alpha, as a true leader needs to be a guide, a mentor, not a tyrant. Tory is a true strong female character, she's brave and smart, but she's not mean or a bully like other so called "strong females leads". When needs arises, she's quick to jump into action and do her part. Both Garrick and Tory compenetrate each other perfectly, as she's the smart, tech-savy girl, and Garrick is the honed, wise forest wolf. She is better at researching with a computer and he's better at researching with his nose. The story is fast to read and it caught my attention from the very first page. It's not the typical "girl meets her alpha mate", though it is what happens. It's a urban fantasy story about a mystery and an investigation, and the mated couple is a sideplot that happens along the rest of the story, but not the main, nor the most important element. It's a good balance between an investigation and a light romance, with the romance adding to the story instead of distracting from it. It's been a while since I've read a fun urban fantasy like this one."
