Intro and chapter 1
It's been 2 years since this war has started. It's been 2 months since The Battle Of Antietam. My brother was so happy he got to fight in the battle. He was so mad when my mother wouldn't let him fight 2 years ago, but he was only 16. I wish he listened to me and not go, but he wanted to fight for what's right. I talked with General Henry W. Halleck, he said I would do well in this war to be a spy.
I have thought about it but my mother doesn't want me to do it. She thinks it's not safe and she doesn't was to lose me too. But, I guess she is right, but I want to help. For my brother, for the Union, for everyone who is and was in slavery. No one should live like that.
It's been a couple of days since I answered General Halleck's letter. My mother was in a frenzied mess. She has been yowling none stop, but who could blame her. She's lost my father in this war as well as my brother, she might lose me too. But, I won't let that happen, I will come back and bring honor to my family even if I'm a female.
People in my town have been talking about my mother. They think she has finally gone mad, nevertheless, I went to our closest and nicest neighbors, the Realens. I asked them to just check on my Mother while I was away. They were much obliged, which I'm forever thankful for. I'm thinking of making them some Oatmeal pie to show my gratitude.
Tomorrow, I'll be heading out to meet with General Halleck. It's late, the sun has set. My father's pocket watch that he gave me before he left for war 2 years ago says it's 10:34. I remember my brother being all miffed because he didn't receive anything from my father. I wish he did, maybe he would have stayed. Maybe he would have listened to our mother and me.
