Chapter 1
This story is no longer mine, this story now belongs to my darling son and daughter. Who have grown to be mighty wolves who are both strong and full of mercy...
It has been only a few weeks since my mother finally drew her last breath. She died peacefully in her sleep, cancer had taken her and her body hadn't any strength left to fight it. She had fought so strongly for so long. I stared at the empty shell that was my father, such a strong man who loved my mother, his mate, with every fiber of his being. It broke him, she had almost died so many times, each time tugging him towards losing his shit. But he had always managed to hold on. I shuddered as his dead eyes caught on mine, there was nothing left of him. His soul was being dragged to the other side by the passing of his true mate.
"Listen to me son, I am not much longer for this world. When I leave, things are going to get messy. You are going to have to fight..." He began to wheeze. "I prepared everything for you. There is an envelope on my desk with all the property deeds and my will." Arianna burst into the room at that moment and rushed to his side gripping his hand in hers.
"Father. We are here, you taught us everything we need to know and I will not leave Kade until everything is settled Shiloh is also here to help. Go be with mom." Tears streamed down her face, a mirror image of my own. I brushed the hot tears with the back of my hand. I was 29 now, and they had lived a hard life together and they loved each other for 32 years.
First Beta Amelia was there when we lowered Alpha Nickolaus into the ground, her strong hand on my shoulder reassuring as we buried my father, the king of the wolves, next to my mother. Both extraordinary leaders I could only dream of being as great as them. My sister crumpled into the dirt, clutching her chest as though her heart hurt, one hand resting on her lightly swollen belly. The stress of the situation had me worried about her unborn baby.
Months pass, Amelia is hell-bent on finding my true mate, and things are getting rocky within the packs. I haven't had time to properly grieve the passing of my parents, Arianna lost her baby and Shiloh has been getting increasingly volatile, though he wouldn't do anything to harm Arianna or their children. Ari has been through too much, but she said that it's how things were supposed to go, that something is coming and she has to be able to physically help me. I still feel guilty, like I could have done something, anything to prevent this all from happening.
Amelia has us parked outside of another alpha's house, the last few packs we visited were alpha's thrusting their daughters under my snout for a chance to grab a bit of glory. My wolf has been dancing anxiously inside my chest, something big is going to happen here. I step out of the car and immediately catch a whiff of something that makes my lungs tingle. Panicked I shoot Amelia a look. I am in no way emotionally ready for my mate. I was years ago but never took the time to go and find them, too much on my plate with preparing to take over not just my pack, but essentially all the packs in North America. I felt like I couldn't breathe, Arianna stepped to my side, a gentle hand on my lower back.
"She's here Kade, and we need to take her home with us today." She was always saying things definitively like that. I knew there was an or else hidden in her words. I didn't have time to respond before a deep growl sounded nearby, followed by Arianna being shoved forcefully to the ground, a large yellow wolf on top of her. I quickly snatched it by the scruff causing a yelp and a whine to emit from... her... Her scent drove me crazy I wanted to bury myself in her fur. I dropped her roughly.
"Shift." The command in my voice and my fighting with my instincts to protect her made my voice rougher and harsher than I intended it to be. She whined but complied. My eyes watched as her golden fur made way for rich-colored skin that looked as soft and silky as calla lilies. Her body was to die for, I wanted to run my hands down her strong and powerful calves. I tried my best to not be disrespectful so I snatched my gaze to hers. And she was pissed, I winced at the rage boiling inside of her.
"King Alpha Kade!" A voice shouted from the door. Reluctantly I forced my gaze off of the woman who was my mate to meet the alpha of the territory. Something was off. "I am so sorry about her, she's part of our hunters and has come in early." I looked back to my mate, who now had the scent of fear rolling off of her. She smelled like him a little too much. I snapped.
"Why does my mate smell like you and fear?" I growled as I positioned myself in front of her protectively. I could hear Arianna shuffling behind me.
"Her love let's get you in the car." She said to my mate. I didn't turn my back on him to see what she was doing but I could feel her behind me.
The alpha's face paled. "First Beta," I called out and she stepped in front of me holding the line of defense as I approached my mate.
"I don't need you to save me." She growled, and it made me smile. She reminded me of my mother. I frowned again.
"Certainly not, this isn't me saving you. This is me taking you home. If you would rather stay here then that is up to you... You can either kill him now or I will. Either way, he has to die for breaking the law. Had you not been my mate we would still be here. Take your justice or I will take it for you."
Her face went through a series of unreadable emotions before settling on doubt.
"Nothing bad will come of you, I can find another more capable alpha for this territory or I can let Sasha absorb it, she's been eyeing this territory anyways." She stood and then shifted to her golden yellow wolf and charged at her former alpha who never even had a chance to twitch to defend himself. He was dead and now I had another problem to solve.
