Chapter 1

***

“You have to help me. I don’t want her here. Neither her nor the baby.’’

The man’s tanned skin was only slightly wrinkled around his handsome mouth. He was the epitome of health, even in his sixties.

“A mistake.” Jack pointed his finger up.

“I messed up once, and now my life is screwed,” he moaned, playing the victim like always.

Lucius looked at his father. The old guy plopped down in the chair, which looked way too small for his tall and strong body. He started gaining weight after his wife, Lucius’ mom, died. Lucius noticed with some amusement.

“Could you please be quiet?” Lucius said, rubbing his face and wanting to wring his father’s neck. He couldn’t sympathize with his parent, not right now.

''I asked Vanesa to marry me, and she said yes. I’m not in a position to have a kid. She’ll leave me,” the older man insisted.

This was ridiculous, Lucius thought, sliding his hand into his pocket and following the neatly folded papers waiting there to be used.

Jack didn’t say anything new to Lucius.

“So let me get this right,” he turned and looked into the same eyes as his, only older.

“You asked Vanessa to marry you? But you knew the baby was due any day now, right?”

Jack’s face turned red as he looked to the side. But kept quiet.

Vanessa, the third stepmom, would be pretty upset if she found out her future hubby was having a baby with a young maid. Jack couldn’t keep his pants zipped while Lucius’s mother was alive, much less after her death.

And now he’s counting on Lucius to clean up the mess.

“When you’re having sex whenever you get the chance, you can’t expect anything but a bunch of kids running around,” Lucius said.

He was irritated by giving his father a lecture on decency.

“Pay them, send them away. I do not care,” Jack waved his hand like a magic wand.

Lucius felt really sorry for his mom. She lived and died without experiencing any other love or passion besides what this man gave her.

She was an heiress. The sole child of one of Italy’s wealthiest families.

His beautiful mom could get any guy she wanted. But she was smitten with Jack, a younger guy who couldn’t resist chasing skirts.

Her passionate Italian blood was her biggest enemy. The more Jack played around, the more she went after him.

It was rare to have a peaceful day in their house. Every memory he had was tainted by his parents’ distrust and jealousy.

There was a reason he chose America to study. The plan was to escape his toxic family and find some peace.

When he turned eighteen, lawyers called Lucius, and his grandpa made him the family’s only heir.

No fortune was left, but he was proud of his ancestors and the long family line that could be followed centuries back. So he worked really hard to earn back the respect and fame that belonged to him.

His parents only knew how to blow money but had no clue about working and making it back. Jack's sole worry was working as little as possible and still living better than most people imagine.

He’d rather kick back and enjoy his son’s success than bother with respect.

“Jack,” Lucius said, “the woman is in labor, and you want me to send her away? It is your child and my sibling that will be born tonight.”

He didn’t expect his dad to say anything. Jack was so caught up in feeling sorry for himself that he could hardly think straight.

“She’s promiscuous. I wouldn’t trust her so easily.” He leaned in and got excited, thinking the baby might not be his.

Lucius knew already that another man might be the baby’s father. Still, he was convinced this was going to be his sibling born tonight. And he was determined to adopt the child.

The contract he had in his pocket was for that. There’s no chance he’d let this opportunity slip away.

Running his hands through his midnight-black hair, a trait he inherited from his mother, he leaned on the desk behind him.

In height and stature, he was an athletic, well-toned version of his Montenegrin father. His strong jaw, slightly curved nose, and intense eyes made his face look fierce. No one could call Lucius a simple man or beautiful, but his appeal went beyond looks. It went deep into the guts of anyone who meets him.

’’I messed up big time, but can you help me out?’’

There was a knock, and a nurse came in.

“It’s started. The contractions are regular. Baby’s on the way, due in a few hours.’’

Jack squirmed in the chair, so Lucius put him out of his misery. He didn’t want to deal with his half-sibling’s birthday and his dad’s funeral on the same day. It’s too much of a hassle.

’’The baby and the woman are my responsibility. But seriously, can you please try to behave from now on?” Lucius said and went towards the door.

The old man grabbed his hand, kissed it, and held it tight.

“Thank you, my son. I don’t know what I would do without you.’’

Lucius paused for a moment, the grooves around his mouth softening. He unbuttoned his jacket, threw it on the chair, and gave his dad a pat on the shoulder. Then he casually walked down the hallway, where his housekeeper, Marta, awaited him.

“I am sorry, Sir. I didn’t know the girl was such a pushover. When I interviewed her....” Marta struggled for words, “If I had assumed what she was capable of, I would never hire her.”

He put his big hands on the woman’s fragile shoulders. She only reached his chest, and he remembered when she used to hold and care for him.

“You couldn’t know. Don’t bother yourself with what others are doing.’’ He stroked her back.

Marta’s messy bun shook, and she let out a breath.

“She’s not evil. She’s had another kid, a fourteen-year-old girl, no Dad in sight, be fair, Lucius. The woman is clueless and way too trusting, but she’s not evil.’’

Marta was the one thing that never changed in his life. He had way more memories of this woman than his mom.

“Everything will be fine, don’t worry.” He reassured her again.

He scanned the room for his security guy, Henry.

He wanted to have a brief conversation with a man. Henry was all jittery, just ten feet away, waiting.

He looked guilty as hell, with his head and shoulders all sagging.

“Good evening, Henry. How are you today?” Lucius greeted him.

The security chief smiled hesitantly. He was a big, tall man, one of the best in his business.

Lucius rolled up his sleeves, showing off his strong forearms, and stared right at Henry.

“Tell me, did I hear right?” he let his right-hand press into Henry’s shoulder.

“This baby could be as much yours as my father’s?” He asked in a low voice so Marta couldn’t hear him. The woman was already stressed, and he didn’t wanna make it worse.

Henry nodded. His whole body was as tight as a wire.

“If it’s yours, do you want to keep it?” Lucius asked directly. He watched the play of emotions on the man’s face. He knew Henry was married and had children.

“I only slept with her once, a while back, before your father threatened my job if I got involved with her again,” he muttered.

“Henry, just so you know, babies pop out nine months after getting it on. One time should be enough. You got two kids at home, man. You know that,” Lucius was losing patience.

’’My apologies, boss. I won’t let it happen again. It was so damn hard. She was beautiful and willing.”

“You may go.” He told Henry and saw him bolt out of the house like he was being chased by wolves.

The night was eerily quiet.

After Henry denied the child, Lucius turned toward the courtyard and walked to the small cottages on the other side of the estate, where all the household help stayed.

Before confronting his dad and Henry, he knew they’d see the baby as a problem. He was sure it was his dad’s kid. The dates matched. And he had this feeling deep down that his half-sibling was gonna be born tonight.

That was a good thing. Having a baby could screw up his old man’s life, but it would save his fragile marriage.

He glanced around to find Marta.

’’Can you show me her room?’’

″AAAAAAA″

The answer came immediately.
