Chapter 1 Her crush, his date
Kelsey sat in front of her vanity mirror, staring at her reflection with a frown on her face. She had no interest in going to the party her father was throwing, especially not to find a husband. She was too preoccupied with finding her crush, a man with an exceptionally strong grey wolf whose face she couldn’t get out of her head.
She sighed heavily, running a brush through her long, curly hair. Her wolf was restless, urging her to go out and check out the ball room, but Kelsey didn’t feel like it. She just wanted to stay in her room and sulk.
“Why do I have to go to this stupid party?” she muttered to herself, glancing over at the elegant gown her maid had laid out for her. “I don’t want to find a random husband. I want to find my crush.”
She let out another sigh, leaning back in her chair and closing her eyes. She could almost picture his face, the way his dark hair fell across his forehead and his piercing blue eyes seemed to stare right through her. She had only seen him once, years ago, but she couldn’t get him out of her head.
But now, with the party looming, Kelsey felt a sense of dread. She knew her father would be pushing her to pick a suitor, and she had no interest in any of the eligible bachelors in attendance.
“I’ll never find him at this stupid party,” she grumbled, standing up and pacing around the room. “What’s the point?”
Her wolf growled in agreement, sensing her frustration. Kelsey rubbed her forehead, feeling a headache coming on.
Kelsey took a deep breath as she entered her father’s study, preparing herself for the argument to come. She loved her father, but she knew he could be stubborn when it came to pack duty.
“Father,” she said, trying to keep her voice calm. “I don’t want to pick a husband tonight. I’m not ready.”
Her father, Alpha Marcus, looked up from his desk and regarded her with a stern expression. “Kelsey, you know as well as I do that it’s time for you to find a mate. It’s your duty as the princess of our pack.”
“But I’m not interested in any of the suitors you’ve picked for me,” Kelsey argued. “I want to find someone on my own, someone who I have a real connection with.”
Her father sighed, leaning back in his chair. “Kelsey, I understand how you feel. But this is about more than just your personal feelings. It’s about the future of our pack. We need strong alliances, and a marriage with one of these suitors could provide that.”
Kelsey shook her head, her frustration mounting. “I don’t want to be forced into a loveless marriage just for the sake of pack politics.”
“I’m not asking you to marry someone you don’t love,” her father said firmly. “But I am asking you to consider your responsibilities as the princess. Please, Kelsey. Think about what’s best for our pack.”
Kelsey wanted to argue more, to plead her case with more conviction. But she knew her father was right. As much as she hated the idea of being forced into a loveless marriage, she couldn’t ignore her duties to her pack.
With a heavy heart, she left her father’s study and returned to her room to prepare for the party.
Again, she sat down in front of her vanity mirror, and the maids began their work. They started by brushing, adding subtle waves and curls to create a soft, romantic look. Next, they applied light, natural makeup, accentuating her features without overwhelming them. A soft, rose-colored lipstick gave her lips a subtle, yet alluring pop of color.
Once her hair and makeup were complete, the maids helped Kelsey into her dress. It was a stunning piece of art, with intricate beading and embroidery adorning the bodice and trailing down the flowing skirt. The dress hugged her curves in all the right places, highlighting her natural beauty.
As she stood up, the maids added the finishing touches: a delicate diamond necklace, matching earrings, and a sparkling bracelet. The jewels added a touch of glamour and sophistication to her overall look.
Kelsey turned to the mirror and couldn’t help but gasp at her reflection. The maids had done an excellent job, and her dress and jewelry also complement her beauty. Kelsey couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride as she looked at herself in the mirror. She was stunning, and she knew it.
As Kelsey made her way to the party, all eyes turned to her. The room fell silent as everyone stopped to admire her beauty. The suitors her father had picked out for her looked at her with renewed interest, and even some of the taken men couldn’t help but glance at her way.
As Kelsey made her way through the crowd, her eyes scanned the room. Yes, of course, they are all handsome young men with a good family background, as expected of young talents chosen by her father.
But they were not her crush.
Suddenly, she spotted a man across the room, talking with his friend. Dark hair, blue eyes, and a face exactly the same as her crush!
Her heart skipped a beat.
She walked towards him, not believing her luck.
“Hi,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m Kelsey. Kelsey Hawkins. Do you remember me?”
The man looked at her with confusion, clearly not recognizing her. “I’m sorry, I don’t think we’ve met before.”
That’s okay, she had expected that he might forget her. But that’s not important, what’s important is - she found him.
“It’s okay if you don’t remember me,” Kelsey said, turning back to face him. “But can I know your name? “
The man hesitated for a moment before answering. “My name is Tristan Lambert,” he said. “And I’m sorry, but I really don’t think we’ve met before. ”
“Nice to meet you Tristan.” Kelsey smiled at him with her eyes glittering, but Tristan didn’t pay much attention.
A dance song was coming to an end and a new one was about to start. She glanced at the girls and boys who were dancing on the dance floor along, and extended an invitation to Tristan: “Tristan, if you don’t mind, would you like to dance with me?”
“I’m sorry, miss Kelsey.” Tristan replied coldly and turned his head away, “If you’ll excuse me, I need to go back to my date and dance with her.”
His...date? Kelsey frowned and followed his movement with her eyes, and saw him take the hand of a young girl who was also smiling at him. They walked hand-in-hand to the dance floor, just the time when the new song started to play.
Kelsey stared at the girl’s dress swirling along with the movement of the dance, and then she secretly let out a sigh of relief - this girl looks too poor to pose any threat to her. The dress the girl was wearing was a cheap one, even cheaper than the silk ribbon Kelsey used to decorate her hair. Although she seemed to have dressed herself carefully, she is still a far cry from a real noble lady.
Little did she know, she had made a huge mistake. In fact, two, two mistakes that completely turned her otherwise peaceful life upside down.
