Chapter 1

Roydah's pov

1980, Livingston.

Opportunity. Missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Upon hearing the word, Roydah's mind was made up to take advantage of it. To take a leap of faith.

One opportunity used wisely can change your life dramatically, she thought to herself.

"I do not agree Roydah," her best friend said instead with reason. “It’s too risky." Jane's concerned voice pulled Roydah from her train of thoughts.

Roydah rolled her eyes at Jane’s words, and stepped over to sit beside her sick bed.

"Risk is my middle name. I thought you know that by now," Roydah joked with a wide smile stretched on her face, before it then faded and she continued, "But, on a serious note, let me do this. Allow me to help you as you recover."

Jane shook her head, not fond of the idea her younger friend brought up. "You'll be helping me if you stay with me," she uttered, gently grabbing Roydah's hand to give a quick peck.

"Having you and safe here with me, is what matters most to me."

Roydah understood her friend’s worry. She felt a pang of guilt, but she decided not to focus on it, steeling herself against the emotion. She made a decision and she would not risk caving to her doubts.

"Let's say I listened to you and stayed,” Roydah hypothesised.

“Where would money for our house bills come from? Sure, you saved money but it won't be enough to cater for our expenses."

Sighing, Roydah held Jane’s eyes and carried on. "I am tired of sitting around, Jane, of doing nothing. Forget about me. How will you secure your job? They'll just give it to someone else. Let me go and work there as you. We can't afford to miss such an opportunity."

Huffing quietly in frustration, Jane let go of Roydah's hand, and turned her gaze skyward. Her eyes narrowed as she stared at the ceiling, contemplating the idea.

"This is too risky. What if they find out? We could be arrested for fraud."

Roydah gave her best friend a malicious grin.

"I already thought hard about this. The Limbikani family are moving in from the city next week."

Jane nodded. "Nobody from the ranch has met you yet, except our good friend Lewis," Jane said, but not without a blush, as she then nodded again with relieved relief.

"Well then, you have nothing to worry about dear friend."

"This is an opportunity knocking right at my door, a job opportunity as a healer for the

second richest family in town, and I'd be damned if I lose it."

Sorry for the short chapter.

It's a short story,

Maybe I'll make it longer in the future.

Thank you for taking time to read it. Much love ❤️
