Prologue

“You can’t be serious about this… what the hell are you thinking?” Thumper’s voice echoed through my small room as I continued packing my luggage, deliberately ignoring his outburst. Each shout felt like nails on a chalkboard. How could he not see me as the woman I had become? I could feel his piercing gaze on me, and after a heavy sigh, he ran his hand through his disheveled hair. His tone softened, laced with desperation. “Bambi… stop this and talk to me. You’re not being rational.”

My heart was aching, but I bit down on my lip, suppressing the urge to snap back as I let him vent. I could only imagine how difficult it was for him to watch me move out, leaving him behind. But marrying the man I loved was non-negotiable; it was my choice. I glanced at the picture frame of my family on the nightstand and carefully tucked it into my luggage, feeling his eyes trail my every move.

“You can’t marry that fucking asshole!” he yelled, his frustration palpable. The mention of Tommy ignited something deep within me. I turned to him, hand planted firmly on my hip. “I love him, Thumper! Why can’t you see that? I don’t understand why you can’t be happy for us.”

His fists clenched as he took a step closer, fury radiating from him. But I stood my ground, knowing he would never hurt me. It baffled me that my favorite person and my boyfriend were at such odds. “He’s not good enough for you, Bambi! You deserve so much more. Finish medical school, live your life fully… but this? You’re far too young to think about marriage—especially not with a jerk like him.”

I rolled my eyes, turning back to my packing. He would never stop fussing about my plans to elope in Vegas. I wished he could be there for me on my big day, but it was clear that wasn’t going to happen if he couldn’t accept Tommy. I zipped the suitcase and faced him again, determination flooding my voice. “Thumper… I’ve made up my mind. Just be happy for me. He loves me.” I reached up to cup his cheek, but the way he slapped my hand away felt like a dagger to my heart.

“No! If you walk out that door, forget about me,” he thundered, pointing to the exit as disbelief washed over me. “What!” I exclaimed, my anger flaring. “You heard me.”

Staring into his intense blue eyes, I noticed a darkness that wasn’t usually there. Clenching my jaw, I replied, “Are you seriously making me choose between the man I love and you?” His nod felt like a lead weight in my chest. “Yes, I am. You don’t love him, Bambi. You think you do, but you’re too young to know what love is,” he shot back through gritted teeth. “If you walk out, you’ll be dead to me. Do you understand? If you choose him, you will no longer exist in my life.” His words hit me like a ton of bricks.

I fought to maintain my composure, tears cascading down my cheeks as disbelief turned to heartbreak. “I can’t believe you just said that… You were always supposed to have my back. You’re my ride-or-die, my other half.” I spoke through choked sobs, pressing my hand against my chest, his grip tightening around my arm.

He shook his head, his voice dropping to a near whisper, tinged with regret. “I will always have your back, Bambi, which is why I’m telling you to stay away from that manwhore.” His insult cut deep, and I jerked my arms from his clasp, quickly zipping up my luggage to hide how much his words hurt. I lifted it off the bed and placed it on the floor, determination fueling my actions. “If I have to choose between him and you, then I choose him… After today, consider me dead to you.” I stormed out, dragging my luggage, desperate to keep my hand from trembling.

“Bambi!” he called after me, his voice filled with a desperate plea as I hurried down the stairs without his help. “Bambi! Jesus, I’m begging you to stop… don’t do something stupid. You can’t marry that asshole,” he shouted, and I turned, wiping my tears away.

“Why not? Because you say so? I’m sorry, Thumper, but you don’t get to dictate my life. I’m an adult! I’ve always honored your opinion when I needed advice, but the fact that you could turn your back on me hurts more than you know. After today, just imagine I’ve died along with them.”

With that, I slammed the door behind me, marching towards Tommy’s car. As I climbed in, dragging my luggage behind me, I felt the weight of my choice. “Ahhhhh!” I heard Thumper yell, my heart breaking a little more with each sound. I fastened my seatbelt, stealing one last glance at the door, half-expecting him to run out, apologizing, telling me he’d always have my back. But he didn’t.

Tears streamed down my face as Tommy pulled out of the driveway, the reality of it all sinking in. My favorite person never came after me, and the sting of his words looped through my mind like a haunting reminder: how could he erase me from his life?Cha
