Chapter one

Chiara

With a loud thump, my body smashed against the ground. I pushed myself up and shook my head to clear my mind. Fuck, I shouldn’t have let this happen. If I had paid a little more attention, I could have avoided him.

With my dirty hand, I pushed a lock of hair behind my ears. I looked up and saw a big smirk on my brother’s face.

“Come on, Chiara, I know you can do better than that.”

Jim had his hands on his hips which made his big muscular arms even larger. His dark brown hair hung a little over his bright blue eyes. He scanned my body for injuries. His round babyface looked soft and friendly. With his 6.2 ft. he looked like a giant teddy bear.

But I knew better. Sure, when we were chilling, he was like every big brother to me. But in training, he was merciless.

He reached out his hand for me to take. I grabbed it and he pulled me up.

“Now, show me what you are capable of.”

I sighed and was frustrated. Normally Jim could never handle me this fast. But today, I was a little bit off.

I looked up at Jim. With my 5,6 ft. I was a lot smaller than him.

If you would see us two train together, you wouldn’t think I could take him down. But I was quick, really quick.

As the daughter of the Alpha of the Lunar Eclipse Pack, I was a lot faster and stronger than your average wolf. Off course, Jim being the next Alpha, he was even stronger.

I went into my battle position and beckoned him. Jim was like a bear when he fought. He was a little bit clumsy in his movements sometimes, but he was so strong.

I, on the other hand, was more like a jaguar. I normally avoided every move he made. And when he least expected it, I struck.

I kept a close eye on him to figure out his next move. But suddenly I felt this strange sensation, and just like before, Jim took advantage of it.

As soon as his body slammed into mine, I flew through the air and landed on my ass, again, with a loud thump.

“What’s wrong, Sis?” Jim looked at me with concern in his eyes. He knew, this wasn’t normal for me.

I shrugged my shoulders and a frown appeared between my eyebrows.

“I don’t know, I got this strange sensation that distracted me.”

“Are you nervous about tonight?” Jim questioned me.

Tonight was the annual ball for unmated wolves. This year, our pack was the one organizing it. Unmated wolves from all around the country would come here to find their mate.

I shook my head.

“You know I don’t want a mate, Jim. I’m perfectly happy with Kaine.”

Jim’s face twisted in disgust. “Come on Sis, you are joking, right? You could never be truly happy with that human.” He spat out that last word.

I sighed. “Why not. Kaine makes me very happy. I believe he might be the one for me.”

Jim put his hands on my shoulders and looked me straight in the eye.

“Kaine is a human who can never understand the world you are living in. You are not allowed to tell him who you are.” He warned me.

I took a step back and waved my hand at him. “Yeah, yeah, I know.”

I had met Kaine at high school a couple of months before our graduation. It was love at first sight. But after graduation, he went to local college while I became one of the best fighters and trackers of the pack.

Kaine had no idea what I did or who I was. As far as he knew, I was on a different university.

This morning, I would meet him in one of the coffeeshops in town. We never met here, on our grounds. I wasn’t allowed to bring him here.

Jim snapped his fingers in front of me. “Earth to Chiara, come in Chiara.”

I became irritated with him. “What Jim?” I snapped at him.

“I asked you if you want to continue or not?”

I shook my head. “I’m too distracted.”

Jim looked with mischief in his eyes. “Maybe your mate is on his way, maybe that’s the sensation that you feel.”

I pushed him hard against his shoulder, but he didn’t move one bit.

I turned around and stormed of. I was pissed at him. I took one more glance at him.

“Fuck you, Jim!”

“I love you too.” He shouted back with a grin on his face.

I ran to my room and slammed the door. I needed a hot shower. Although the training wasn’t very intensive, I needed to wash off the dirt.

After the shower I put on a little black dress. I looked at myself in the mirror.

My wavy golden blond hair came up to my small waist. My forest green eyes were surrounded by my long black eyelashes. My nose was straight and sharp and my mouth plump and soft.

I looked very fit and athletic with curves on the right places. I was pleased with the way I looked. I nodded approvingly to myself.

I put on my flats and looked at the time. It was almost 10:30 a.m. I left my room and just wanted to leave the pack house when I heard a well-known voice.

“Chiara, where are you going?” Asked a deep rough voice.

I turned around. My father poked his head around the corner of his office. His brown hair accentuated his brown eyes. His crocked nose showed the many fights he had, and of course, which he won. His plump mouth was surrounded by a well-trimmed beard.

“I’m just going to have some coffee, dad.” I hoped he didn’t ask further, but unfortunately, he did.

“Don’t tell me you are going to that boy.” Disapproval dripped from his voice.

I sighed. My parents and brother weren’t happy with the fact that I was dating a human.

“It’s just coffee, dad. I’ll be back for lunch.” I looked at him with puppy eyes to convince him to let me go. He rolled his eyes at me.

“Okay, but you better be back for lunch, because your mother needs you.”

I nodded and blew him a hand kiss. I left before he could change his mind.

During the hour drive to the coffeeshop my mind drifted off. The ball tonight was a big spectacle. Hundreds of wolves from all around the country would gather, they all tried to find their mate.

Because of the fact I just turned 18, I was also expected. My brother participated for the third time. He really hoped this year, he would find his mate. I wasn’t so keen on finding my mate. I believed in finding your own love of your live. And as far as I knew, I already found mine.

I parked the car in front of the coffeeshop and walked in. I took a deep breath and already smelled him.
