Welcome to the third edition of the Become Hooked Contest. Focusing on a story’s first chapter, the contest will take a hybrid form this year, including editing and judging.
In the first round, the entry chapters will receive a full developmental edit from Vanessa M.D. for the participant to consider and implement in a new draft.
The new, edited version will then be judged by Will Nuessle.
As a result, the participant has the opportunity to gain experience by working with their texts seen through the lens of an editor. The suggestions should provide solutions by identifying big-picture storytelling issues regarding plot, story, characterization, structure, tension, theme, genre, and narrative style, and consequently help the writer craft hooking first lines and pages.
