Prologue
“How many?” Cain asked.
Declan stared at his alpha, not at all liking what he had to say. “Three dozen.”
They were in Cain's office, a spacious room with black walls and grey flooring. The entire left wall was a window, bulletproof of course, which looked out onto the city beneath. A light fixture hanging from the ceiling combines with the moonlight filtering through the window and lights the room up. Cain stood over the desk, his large figure looming over his delta who stood next to the chair. Two potted plants sat in vases at opposite ends of the room, adding a touch of greenery.
“Fuck.”
Cain growled in frustration, his hands automatically clenching at his sides. For a few moments, he stood in contemplative silence.
“How did you find out?”
“Respectfully, Alpha Cain, I can’t tell you.”
Cain’s glare would have made any man shudder in his boots. Unfortunately, Declan was not only his delta but also his closest friend. He was immune to the big bad alpha stare.
“Can you at least tell me if the source is reliable?”
Declan nodded sharply.
“Very well.” Cain had never had reason to doubt his delta. He would have to take Declan’s word for it. Picking up his abandoned glass of whiskey, he walked to the window which overlooked the city. It was nighttime, but like any self-respecting city, the streets were well-lit. From his position on the sixty-eight floor, he spied a couple kissing under a lampshade. He took a long sip of the alcohol, grimacing slightly at the burn. Then, turning back to the desk to face his friend, he scribbled a hasty note and stamped it with his official seal.
Declan watched him with barely contained agitation. “I don’t think that’s such a good idea, Alpha Cain.”
He knew his friend well enough to know the message the missive contained without needing to read it.
Cain glared at him. But it was a tired look. He was a powerfully built man but appeared small and afraid when he sighed. Like the pup he had once been.
“See to it that Alpha Thorn receives this message immediately.”
“Very well,” Declan nodded grimly. “But alpha-”
“And not a word of this to Candy,” Cain cut him off, staring him in the eye, daring him to continue speaking.
Cain, having dismissed his delta proceeded to refill his glass. He cradled the glass, staring at its contents with soulful blue eyes.
It was going to be one of those nights.
