Prologue

Cold. All she could focus on was the cold. Her eyes snapped open only to cause immediate burning of the saltwater around her. She was underwater and she had no idea how she ended up there. Panic began to set in when she tried and tried to kick her way to the surface and the surface only ended up farther away. Her lungs were burning. She knew she was running out of time. The blue of the water was slowly fading away as her vision began to fill with darkness. The burning in her lungs increased. At that moment she vowed she would not allow herself to die like this. Very slowly, she felt her body lift upwards. She tried to open her heavy eyes but all she could see was a glowing blue light as her head broke the surface. She gasped as her chest filled with the air she had gone without. Her arms flailed in the air causing the water to splash. She coughed and coughed and coughed. She frantically looked around just as she saw a bright light land on her. She faintly heard voices around her as her body was hauled out of the water. Oddly enough, she didn’t feel the cold anymore. She felt safe. She glanced up to see her savior’s face. His piercing blue eyes were the last thing she could focus on before everything faded into black.
