Scars
Emma's eyes flew open in the dead of night, her body drenched in a cold sweat, a piercing scream caught in her throat. She sat up, her heart pounding, her breath ragged. It took a few moments for her to regain her bearings and realize that it was just a nightmare—a vivid, terrifying nightmare where her own brother was trying to kill her.
Shaking off the lingering fear, Emma swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stood up. She needed something to calm her nerves, so she quietly made her way downstairs to the kitchen. The darkness enveloped her, but she found solace in the moonlight that streamed through the window. As she filled a glass with water, she glanced outside and saw that the night was still in full swing.
Unable to shake off the remnants of the nightmare, Emma knew sleep wouldn't come easily. She glanced at the pile of unfinished work on her desk, deadlines looming over her like shadows. With a sigh, she switched on the desk lamp and settled into her chair. She needed to distract her mind, to find solace in the mundanity of work.
Morning arrived with a sliver of light peeking through the curtains, illuminating Emma's room. She stretched, yawned, and slowly got out of bed. Today was a new day—a day to face the world outside her troubled mind. She quickly got ready for university, her mind still plagued by the images of her dream.
After her morning classes, Emma decided to take a detour to the local café. The familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee and the gentle chatter of patrons provided a sense of comfort. She had recently started working there part-time to escape her own thoughts. As she donned her apron and prepared to take orders, a knot of nervousness settled in her stomach.
The café bustled with activity, and Emma found herself serving a customer, carefully balancing a tray with a steaming cup of tea. But fate had its own plans. In a moment of clumsiness, the cup slipped from her grasp, its contents cascading onto the man's shirt. Mortified, Emma stammered an apology.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to spill the tea," she said, her cheeks flushing red.
The man looked up, a mix of surprise and recognition in his eyes. "Emma?" he questioned, his voice filled with disbelief.
Fear clenched Emma's heart as she denied any connection. "I think you have me mistaken for someone else," she replied, her voice quivering. Panic gripped her, and without waiting for a response, she turned and rushed towards the safety of the bathroom, her footsteps echoing in her ears.
Locking herself in the bathroom , Emma leaned against the cool tiles, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She whispered to herself, trying to steady her trembling voice, "No contact. No connections to the past." The words echoed, a mantra to protect herself from the ghosts that haunted her memories.
After what felt like an eternity, Emma emerged from the bathroom, her heart still pounding. But the customer she had spilled tea on was nowhere to be seen. She let out a shaky breath, relief washing over her, though a nagging feeling of unease lingered.
The rest of the day passed by in a blur of lectures and mundane tasks. As evening descended, Emma headed back home, her footsteps heavy with a mixture of exhaustion and trepidation. Just as she was about to reach her front door, her neighbor's voice called out to her, interrupting her thoughts.
"Emma, wait! There's a parcel for you," her neighbor called, holding up a small box.
Emma's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "A parcel? I wasn't expecting anything," she replied, her voice tinged with curiosity.
Taking the box from her neighbor, Emma thanked them and entered her home. Skepticism clouded her mind as she stared at the neatly wrapped package. Who could be sending her something now? With cautious hesitation, she untied the ribbon and lifted the lid.
Inside, she found a photograph—her and her best friend from childhood, their smiles radiant and innocent, the memories flooding back like a bittersweet wave. Beneath the photo lay a handwritten note, words etched onto the paper, their meaning sending shivers down Emma's spine.
"It is about your brother. When you are ready to face the truth, come and find me at 67 Emerely Green. There is a cafeteria. You have only 3 weeks to decide. - Dolan."
Emma's hands trembled as she read the note, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and curiosity. The mention of her brother, coupled with the urgency in the message, left her feeling vulnerable and unsure. "What does this mean?" she whispered to herself.
"I'm not equipped to deal with my past. I don't have the power or the resources. I just want to be happy, to live a modest life," she admitted, her words a plea to the universe.
After placing the box on a corner of her living room, Emma poured herself a glass of wine. She took a few sips, the warmth seeping through her body, but her gaze remained distant and lost, her mind grappling with the choices that lay before her.
Emma's thoughts were abruptly interrupted by the incessant vibration of her phone on the coffee table. She glanced at the screen and saw that it was her friend Jasmine calling. Curiosity piqued, she answered the call.
"Hey, Emma! What's up? I was just thinking of you," Jasmine greeted her cheerfully.
Emma couldn't help but smile at the sound of her friend's voice. "Hey, Jasmine. What's going on?"
"There's this new club that opened up downtown, and we're all going tonight. You should come with us! It'll be a great way to let loose and have some fun," Jasmine suggested, her excitement palpable.
Emma hesitated, her mind still reeling from the mysterious note she had received earlier. The idea of a club didn't exactly align with her current state of mind, but she knew that Jasmine meant well. "I don't know, Jas. I've been having a rough day, and I'm not really in the mood for crowds and loud music."
Jasmine's voice softened, concern lacing her words. "I understand, Em, but sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders. Just a few hours to take your mind off things, dance, and have fun. Plus, you won't be alone. We'll all be there for you."
Emma sighed, her resistance wavering. She longed for a brief escape, even if just for a night. "Okay, fine. I'll come, but just for a little while."
"Perfect! Get ready, and we'll swing by to pick you up in about an hour," Jasmine replied, relief evident in her voice.
Emma hung up the phone and glanced at herself in the mirror. She took a deep breath and started getting ready for the club.
An hour later, the sound of a car pulling up outside her house announced the arrival of Jasmine and their friends. Emma grabbed her purse, gave herself one last reassuring look in the mirror, and made her way outside. Jasmine greeted her with an enthusiastic hug, her infectious energy was contagious.
The club buzzed with life as they stepped inside, the thumping music reverberating through the air. Emma's senses were immediately overwhelmed—the pulsating lights, the cacophony of voices, and the rhythm that seemed to permeate every inch of the place.
Drinks flowed freely as they settled at a table, laughter and animated conversation filling the air. Emma allowed herself to be swept up in the atmosphere, succumbing to the allure of the night. She danced, laughed, and indulged in the carefree moments that seemed to momentarily drown out her inner turmoil.
As the night wore on, Emma found herself navigating through the crowd, intent on retrieving another round of shots for her group of friends. But amidst the sea of faces, she thought she caught a glimpse of someone all too familiar. Her heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat. It couldn't be... her brother? No, it was impossible. She shook her head, dismissing the thought as nothing more than a trick of her imagination.
Shaking off the unease, Emma finally made her way back to the table, carefully balancing the tray of drinks. She forced a smile, masking her apprehension, and handed out the shots to her friends. They raised their glasses, toasting to the night, the music pulsating through their veins.
As the hours slipped away, the club began to wind down. Emma found herself in the role of the responsible one, the sober driver among her intoxicated friends. Reluctantly, she bid farewell to the vibrant atmosphere, guiding her friends towards the exit.
The journey home was filled with laughter and slurred conversations from her inebriated companions. Emma focused on the road, her mind drifting back to the events of the evening. That fleeting moment of seeing her brother amidst the chaos still lingered in her thoughts, an unanswered question she wasn't ready to confront.
The night slowly faded away, the dim glow of the streetlights guiding them home. Emma dropped off each of her friends, making sure they stumbled safely into their houses. Alone in the car, silence enveloping her, she pondered the choices she had made and the path that lay before her. The weight of her past and the uncertain future clashed within her, and as she drove off into the empty streets, she couldn't help but wonder what awaited her at 67 Emerely Green.
