Chapter 1- Part 1 Madison

Part 1- Madison

Madison’s brown eyes flickered open as the first light of dawn seeped through her thin curtains. She rubbed sleep from her eyes, her heart racing with an inexplicable sense of urgency. As she swung her legs out from under the covers and brushed her tangled hair back, she noticed that the air was thick with salt and the promise of a sweltering summer day. Her small room was cluttered with pencil sketches and watercolors she had created over the years, each one a window into her dreams of becoming an art teacher.

“Grandpa will be up soon,” she murmured to herself, her voice barely audible above the crashing waves outside their little house by the beach.

She tiptoed down the creaky wooden staircase and entered the cozy kitchen. The scent of coffee wafted through the air, mingling with sea breeze. Madison carefully prepared breakfast: scrambled eggs, toast, and a steaming cup of her grandfather’s favorite dark roast.

“Morning, sweetheart,” her grandfather greeted her, shuffling into the kitchen. He was hunched and frail, his once-strong body fighting in th war, now betraying him in his old age.

“Morning, Grandpa,” Madison replied, trying to ignore the pang of worry she felt every time she looked at him. “I made you breakfast.”

“Thank you, dear,” he said, settling into his chair at the worn but well-loved kitchen table. Madison joined him, picking at her own food as she watched him eat. There was something on his mind; she could feel it in the heavy silence between them.

“Madison,” he began, setting down his fork, “you know I’m not long for this world. There’s something I need to tell you.”

“Grandpa, please don’t talk like that,” Madison interrupted, her chest tightening. She hated hearing him speak so morbidly, even if it was the truth.

“Listen to me, Madison,” he insisted, his voice firm but kind. “There’s a darkness in this world, one that has haunted our family for generations. I’ve tried my best to shield you from it, especially after we lost your parents.”

Madison’s throat constricted at the mention of her parents, who had died in a car accident when she was just five years old. She had been raised by her grandparents ever since, and now, with her grandmother gone, only her grandfather remained.

“Grandpa, what are you talking about?” she asked, unnerved by the cryptic warning.

“Promise me, Madison,” he said, gripping her hand with surprising strength, “that you’ll be cautious. Trust your instincts and watch out for those around you. There’s more to this world than meets the eye.”

“Of course, Grandpa,” Madison agreed, though she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something important he wasn’t telling her. She didn’t know if it was his old age talking or if he was serious. He seemed satisfied, however, and they finished breakfast in silence.

As Madison cleared away the dishes, she couldn’t help but wonder what her grandfather had meant. A darkness? What could possibly threaten their quiet life in this sleepy shore town in New Jersey?

She glanced out the window, watching as the sun began to climb higher in the sky, casting golden light across the sand dunes. If there was danger lurking in the shadows, she couldn’t see it. But she couldn’t deny the growing unease that settled in her chest, like a storm brewing on the horizon.

Madison stepped outside, gripping the trash bag tightly as she made her way towards the garbage cans at the edge of her driveway. The sun’s rays warmed her face, a gentle breeze tousling her brown hair. She couldn’t help but be reminded of her grandfather’s cryptic warning earlier that morning. Shaking her head, she tried to dispel the thoughts that clouded her mind.

“Morning, Madison!” She heard Ms. Jenkins call out from across the fence. The elderly woman was watering her garden, the vibrant colors of her flowers stark against the white picket fence. Ms. Jenkins was an odd woman, always wearing bright colored outfits and talking about being abducted by aliens. She lived next door to Madison’s grandfather ever since Madison’s mom was young.

“Good morning, Ms. Jenkins,” Madison replied, offering a shy smile. “How are you today?”

“Ah, not too bad,” Ms. Jenkins sighed, wiping sweat from her brow. “Had the strangest dream last night, though.”

“Really? What kind of dream?” Madison asked, curiosity piqued as she leaned against the fence.

“Seemed like I was being chased by a red demon,” Ms. Jenkins confessed with a shudder. “Something about it felt so... real.”

A chill ran down Madison’s spine, her grandfather’s words echoing in her ears. She forced a laugh, hoping to ease the tension. “I’m sure it was just a nightmare, nothing more.”

“Perhaps,” Ms. Jenkins agreed hesitantly. “But I can’t help but think it means something.”

“Hey, Madison!” The familiar voice cut through their conversation, drawing their attention to the street where Luis, Madison’s childhood friend, pedaled towards them on his bike, newspapers tucked under one arm.

“Hi, Luis,” Madison greeted, avoiding eye contact as she felt her cheeks warm. Despite knowing each other for years, she still struggled with her introverted nature around him.

“Got your paper right here,” he said, flashing her a grin as he tossed the rolled-up newspaper onto the porch. Even though Luis was eighteen years old he still delivered newspapers every morning.

“Thanks, Luis,” Madison replied, a small smile gracing her lips.

“Hey, you got any plans tonight?” he asked, his eyes hopeful. “I was thinking maybe we could catch a movie or something.”

“Um, I’m not sure,” she hesitated, her thoughts drifting back to her grandfather’s warning. “I’ll let you know, okay?”

“Sounds good,” he said, a little disappointed but still smiling. “See you later, Madison. Bye, Ms. Jenkins!”

“Goodbye, Luis!” Ms. Jenkins waved as he pedaled off down the street.

“Such a nice young man,” she commented, turning back to her garden. “You two would make a lovely couple.”

Madison felt the heat return to her cheeks, this time with more intensity. “We’re just friends, Ms. Jenkins,” she mumbled, carrying the trash bag towards the garbage cans.

“Of course, dear,” Ms. Jenkins chuckled, knowingly. “Just friends.”

As Madison disposed of the trash and returned inside, her mind raced with thoughts of her grandfather’s warning, the red demon from Ms. Jenkins’ dream, and her growing feelings for Luis.

The sun had risen higher, casting a golden hue over the bustling beach town. Seagulls squawked overhead, and the laughter of children filled the salty air. Madison walked to work at the local pizza shop, feeling the warm sand between her toes as she made her way along the shoreline. The rhythm of the waves crashing against the shore provided a soothing backdrop to her thoughts.

“Madison, hey!” a cheerful voice called out. She turned to see Brianna, one of her coworkers, jogging to catch up with her. “You’re daydreaming again, aren’t you?”

Madison smiled sheepishly. “Yeah, I guess I was.”

“About what?” Brianna asked, nudging her gently. “Come on, spill it!”

“Nothing specific,” Madison lied, not wanting to divulge her dream of becoming an art teacher. “Just...you know, life.”

“Ah, I feel that,” Brianna said, nodding sagely. “Well, come on! We’ve got pizzas to make and customers to serve!”

As they entered the pizza shop, Madison couldn’t help but feel stifled by the greasy smell and noisy chatter. She tied her apron around her waist and took her place behind the counter.

“Order up!” the cook shouted from the kitchen, sliding a steaming pizza onto the counter.

“Got it!” Madison replied, grabbing the pizza and placing it in a box. As she handed it to the waiting customer, she found herself lost in thought once more. In her mind’s eye, she pictured herself standing at the front of a classroom, instilling a love of painting in her students.

“Madison, are you listening?” Brianna’s voice broke through her reverie. “I said we need more napkins at the counter.”

“Sorry, yeah, I’ll get them,” Madison replied, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. She hurried to the supply closet, chiding herself for drifting off again.

“Hey,” Brianna said softly, following her into the closet. “You know you can talk to me if something’s bothering you, right?”

“Thanks, Bri,” Madison replied, touched by her friend’s concern. “It’s nothing really. Just...dreaming of something more, I guess.”

“Ah, the age-old struggle,” Brianna said with a knowing smile. “If you ever need someone to talk to, I’m here for you.”

“Thank you,” Madison whispered, feeling a warm sense of gratitude for the friendship she had found in this small beach town. The aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the air as Madison stood behind the counter, wiping off a layer of flour from her apron. The lively chatter of customers and the clinking of cutlery mingled with the sounds of summer outside the open window – seagulls calling and waves crashing on the shore.

“Madison, can you grab me a large pepperoni?” called out Brianna, her coworker.

“Coming right up,” Madison responded, her voice barely audible above the commotion. She quickly retrieved the pizza from the oven, skillfully slicing it into even portions. Careful to avoid eye contact with the customer anxiously waiting at the counter, she handed the steaming box over to Brianna without exchanging any words.

“Here you go, sir. Enjoy!” Brianna cheerfully handed the pizza to the man, who smiled appreciatively and left a generous tip.

“Thanks,” Madison murmured, absently tucking a strand of her brown hair behind her ear as she continued her tasks. Although she loved working at the pizza shop, she couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the constant flood of people and noise that accompanied the summer season.

“Hey, Madison, can I get another veggie pizza for table five?” asked Tony, the manager. He was an intimidating figure, always barking orders and pacing the floor like a predator stalking its prey.

“Sure thing, Tony,” Madison replied, doing her best to sound confident. Her hands trembled slightly as she began assembling the pizza, her mind racing with thoughts of her aspirations and what life might hold beyond this small beach town.

“Madison!” Tony’s booming voice pulled her from her reverie. “You’ve been standing there for a full minute just staring at that pizza! This isn’t a daydream factory; we have customers waiting!”

“Sorry, Tony,” she stammered, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. She quickly finished preparing the pizza and placed it in the oven, her heart pounding in her chest.

“Get your head in the game, Madison,” Tony warned, his voice dripping with impatience. “One more slip-up like that and I’ll have to reconsider your position here.”

“Understood,” she whispered, fighting back tears as she turned her attention back to the endless stream of orders.

“Hey, don’t let him get to you,” Brianna said quietly, squeezing Madison’s shoulder reassuringly. “We all have off days. Just keep pushing through, okay?”

“Thanks, Bri,” Madison replied, forcing a small smile onto her face. As she prepared another pizza, her mind began to wander once more, conjuring images of a life far removed from the chaos and noise that surrounded her – a life filled with purpose and passion.

The sun had long since dipped below the horizon, casting Madison’s small beach town in a gentle cloak of darkness. The warm glow of streetlights guided her tired feet along the familiar route home, the rhythmic crashing of waves a soothing lullaby in the distance. She pulled her jacket tighter around herself, shielding against the cool night air and the prying gaze of strangers who remained out at this late hour.

“Late shift again,” she muttered under her breath, adjusting the strap of her bag as she turned into an alley that would save her precious minutes on her walk home. Her mind was already drifting to the comfort of her bed, exhaustion tugging at her every muscle after another long day at work.

“Such a shame about your parents, dear,” Madison heard a voice slithered through the darkness, its venomous tone sending shivers down Madison’s spine. She froze, her heart pounding as she tried to locate the source of the sound.

“Who... who’s there?” She stammered, fear seizing her voice as her eyes darted around the shadowy alley. A flicker of red caught her attention, and her blood ran cold as a man stepped into the light, a sinister grin etched across his demonic visage.

“Allow me to introduce myself,” he sneered, his eyes burning with malevolence. “I am Marcus – and I’ve been waiting for you.”

“Waiting for me?” Madison’s voice trembled, her chest tightening as panic threatened to engulf her. “Why?”

“Ah, my dear, it’s quite simple,” Marcus replied, taking a step closer. “You see you are next to be killed..” His words dripped with menace, each syllable like ice against her skin.

“Stay away from me!” Madison cried, her legs suddenly springing into action as she attempted to flee. But Marcus was too fast, his hand shooting out to grab her wrist with an iron grip.

“Running will do you no good, Madison,” he taunted, his laughter like the pealing of a funeral bell. “You can’t escape your destiny – or me.”

Desperation clawed at her chest as she struggled in vain against his grasp. “Please... let me go,” she whispered, tears streaming down her face. “I don’t know what you want from me.”

“Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong,” Marcus replied, his voice dripping with sadistic pleasure. “You see, deep down, you’ve always known who you are – and what your family is.” He leaned in closer, his breath hot against her ear. “And now, it’s time for you to die.”

“Please...” Madison choked out, her vision blurring as terror threatened to overtake her. “Just let me go.”

“Sorry, my dear, but I have other plans,” Marcus murmured, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. “Your fate is sealed – and there’s nothing you can do to change it.”

As she stared into the abyss of his gaze, Madison knew one thing with absolute certainty: her life would never be the same again. The night was thick with the scent of the ocean, the salty air clinging to Madison’s skin as she tried to keep her breathing steady. Marcus’ grip on her wrist tightened, and she could feel each individual pulse of pain all the way up her arm.

“Did you really think I wouldn’t find you?” Marcus sneered, his voice a guttural rasp that sent shivers down her spine. “I’ve been watching you for years, Madison, just waiting for the perfect moment.”

“Wh-why?” she stammered, fear and confusion warring within her. “Why do you want to kill me?” But no response came.

With one swift motion, Marcus yanked her further into the alley, the rough asphalt scraping against her shoes. She stumbled, but he didn’t pause, dragging her deeper into the darkness.

“Help!” Madison screamed, her voice cracking with desperation. “Somebody, please help me!”

“Nobody can save you now,” Marcus growled, his laughter echoing off the brick walls around them. “You’re alone, Madison – and you always will be.”

As they moved further away from the streetlights, the shadows seemed to close in around her, suffocating her senses until all she could focus on was Marcus and the looming threat of her own demise. Her heart pounded in her chest, each beat a frantic plea for escape.

“Please...” she whispered, tears streaming down her face as she tugged at her trapped wrist. “I don’t even know what you’re talking about. My family–”

“Your family,” Marcus interrupted, his voice dripping with venom, “is a long line of fools who believed they could stand against the likes of me. But they’re all gone now, aren’t they? All that’s left is you.”

“Please,” Madison choked out again, her vision blurring as she tried to make sense of his words. “I won’t tell anyone about you. Just let me go.”

“Your fate is sealed, girl,” Marcus snarled, his grip unrelenting. “And there’s nothing you can do to change it.”

As the darkness of the alley swallowed them whole, Madison knew one thing with absolute certainty: this was a nightmare from which she might never awaken.

“Let her go,” a deep voice suddenly commanded from the shadows. Madison’s heart skipped a beat, adrenaline coursing through her veins at the prospect of help.

Marcus’s grip on her wrist loosened for a moment before tightening again. His eyes narrowed as he glared into the darkness. “Ah, Kyle,” he sneered, his lips curling in a malicious grin. “I was hoping you’d show up.”

From the blackness of the alley, a tall figure emerged, silhouetted against the distant glow of streetlights. As he stepped closer, Madison caught her breath at the sight of him: he was undeniably handsome, with chiseled features and long black hair pulled back into a ponytail. He was dressed entirely in black, making it almost impossible to discern where his clothing ended and the shadows began.

“Of course you were,” Kyle replied, his voice low and steady. He kept his gaze locked on Marcus, his blue eyes glinting fiercely. “You always were a petty creature.”

“Petty?” Marcus scoffed, amusement dancing in his eyes. “Hardly.”

“More like you’re too weak to face me alone,” Kyle shot back, taking another step forward. His hand hovered near a hidden weapon at his side, ready to draw it at a moment’s notice.

“Help me, please,” Madison whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. She was torn between despair and hope: if this stranger could save her from Marcus, then maybe she had a chance.

“Stay out of this,” Marcus growled, his grip on her wrist tightening further. “This is between me and the demon hunter.”

Marcus mocked, a cruel smile twisting his features. “But do you really think you can stop me?”

“Watch me,” Kyle challenged, his voice laced with unwavering determination.

“Very well,” Marcus said, releasing Madison’s wrist abruptly. She stumbled backward, falling against the cold alley wall as she watched the confrontation unfold before her.

“Run,” Kyle ordered, his voice firm but gentle. “Get out of here and find somewhere safe.”

“Bu–” Madison hesitated, her thoughts racing. Was it right for her to run away and leave this stranger to face Marcus alone?

“Go!” Kyle barked, his eyes locked on Marcus who was preparing to strike. “I can handle him.”

Madison took a deep breath, her heart pounding in her ears. She had no reason to trust this man, but something about him – his confidence, his determination, his willingness to face a demon head-on – gave her hope. And right now, hope was all she had.

With no time to spare, Madison turned and sprinted down the alley, her heart pounding in her chest as she listened to the sounds of a fierce battle behind her. She could feel the adrenaline coursing through her veins, propelling her forward faster than she’d ever run before.

The salty air of the beach town filled her lungs as she raced toward the shoreline, seeking refuge from the nightmare that had just unfolded. Her brown hair whipped around her face in the summer breeze, partially obscuring her vision as she stumbled onto the sand.

“Keep moving,” Madison urged herself, her breaths coming in ragged gasps as she pushed her legs to carry her even further from danger. The sound of crashing waves reached her ears, offering a small semblance of comfort amidst the chaos.

“Kyle can handle him,” she repeated like a mantra, praying that the demon hunter would hold true to his word. But as much as she wished for the stranger’s success, her instincts screamed at her to keep running – to put as much distance between herself and Marcus as humanly possible.

As Madison neared the edge of the beach, she suddenly found herself tumbling down a steep incline, her body colliding with the sand below. Pain shot through her limbs as she lay there, momentarily dazed by the fall.

“Get up, get up,” she whispered to herself, forcing her bruised and battered body into motion once more. Yet even as she struggled to rise, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. Suddenly she saw Kyle in front of her.

Madison’s heart pounded in her chest as she stared up at Kyle, the moonlight casting eerie shadows across his face. She tried to take a step back, but her legs betrayed her, shaking too much to support her weight.

“Hey,” Kyle said softly, his voice low and soothing. “It’s okay. I won’t let him hurt you.”

“Are-are you sure?” Madison stammered, tears welling in her eyes. Her mind raced with thoughts of Marcus’ terrifying visage, and the overwhelming fear threatened to swallow her whole.

“Absolutely,” Kyle replied, his gaze never leaving hers as he reached out a hand to help steady her. “I promise.”

As Madison grasped his hand, she felt an odd warmth radiating from him, a sense of security that she hadn’t experienced in years. The comfort it provided was short-lived, however, as her vision began to blur and the thunderous pounding in her ears grew louder.

“Kyle... I think... I’m going to...” she whispered, her grip on his hand tightening as her strength waned.

“Stay with me, Madison,” he urged, concern etched across his face. “You’re going to be okay.”

“Can’t... hold on...” she murmured, feeling the darkness encroaching on the edges of her consciousness.

“Madison!” Kyle shouted, his voice fading into the distance as she finally succumbed to the black void that had been waiting for her.

***

“Ugh...” Madison groaned, her eyelids fluttering open as she stirred awake. She blinked several times, trying to focus on the familiar surroundings of her bedroom.

“Easy now,” Kyle’s voice came from nearby, causing her heart to leap in her chest. “You passed out, Madison. I carried you home.”

“Home?” she repeated weakly, still disoriented from the ordeal. “But... Marcus...”

“Marcus is gone. For now, at least,” Kyle reassured her, his expression grim. “I managed to fend him off, but he’ll be back. He won’t stop until he gets what he wants.”

“Which is... me?” Madison asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Unfortunately, yes,” Kyle confirmed, his gaze never leaving hers. “But I won’t let that happen, Madison. I’ll protect you, no matter what it takes.”

A shiver ran down her spine as she considered the implications of Kyle’s words. If Marcus was truly after her, then her life would never be the same. Yet, despite the fear that gnawed at her, there was a small part of her – deep within her soul – that dared to hope, that believed in Kyle’s promise to keep her safe.

“Thank you,” she murmured, her voice filled with a mixture of gratitude and trepidation. “For everything.”

“Anytime,” Kyle replied, offering her a small smile that seemed to light up the room. “Get some rest, Madison. You’re going to need your strength.”

As she drifted back to sleep, Madison clung to that glimmer of hope, knowing that with Kyle by her side, perhaps she stood a chance against the darkness that awaited them both.

I enjoyed reading the first chapter. Madison's life will definitely won't be the same after Marcus the evil demon entered the scene. I'm looking forward to see how this story unfolds.
