Chapter 1: New Gym

I sat down on the black leather cushioned bench with a heavy huff after I was done with the fourth set of squats. Looking up, I face the gym mirror wall, taking in my appearance. My ash-blonde hair was in a messy bun, with rebellious strands sticking out after the intense workout. My sun-kissed skin was glistening with a layer of sweat, and I felt like my clothes were sticking to my skin like glue. I was wearing a pair of black leggings, a grey tank top, a loose pink crop top, and white sneakers. I know wizards were more intellectual people who rather grew their power from books and spells rather than doing physical activities, but as I glanced at the other creatures in the gym, I realized how powerless I was.

The orcs and minotaurs were lifting weights like crazy, displaying their brutal strengths, and the vampires were running these treadmills with the speed of lightning. Compared to them, I was a low adversary if it wasn’t for my magic.

“Phew... That was an intense workout!” My best friend, Sierra, spoke, stretching her arms above her head. She was a werewolf, still in a lower rank, but even she could beat me up when it came to hand-to-hand combat.

“Honestly, this gym is so much better than the previous one we went to. I told you, this one is the best in the city.” Sierra told me before taking huge gulps of water from her bottle.

Nodding, I couldn’t disagree with her about this topic. The previous gym we hit was very small, and you could barely do exercises that required more space. This gym, however, was the epitome of advanced five-star workout devices, not to mention the enormous space. It was almost like a colosseum for working out.

“It sure is,” I whispered, then we continued with our workout. When we were done, we headed to the locker rooms to have a shower and change into casual clothes.

Before we left, Sierra and I decided to stay at the gym bar for some post-workout shakes. While we were savoring our drinks, I noticed from the gym bar how a crowd gathered around where the kickboxing sacks were located. The creatures were watching someone perform something by the looks of it.

“Hey? What’s everyone there looking at?” I asked Sierra, whose ears perked up at my question, and her golden eyes glanced at where I was looking. She squinted her eyes, and when the creatures around made a small gap for us to see, realization plastered over her face.

“Oh! That’s Skyler Firestone.” Sierra revealed, but the name didn’t ring a bell.

“Who?” I asked her, and she gave me a look as if I just arrived on Earth from another planet.

“You don’t know who Skyler Firestone is? I thought wizards were bookworms who knew everything. The top intellectual of the creatures.” I send her an unamused expression, knowing how this topic annoyed me.

“Excuse me, but we are not omniscient creatures. We do learn additional facts through our lives.”

She put her hands in surrender. “Alright, alright. I will enlighten you.”

“Skyler Firestone is a dragon who entered the mythologic special forces in the military at a very young age, and she is famous for taking part in deadly combat tournaments for all sexes. She has a deadly reputation for never losing once.” My eyes widened.

“Not even once?” Sierra shook her head and continued to speak.

“She beat the crap out of orcs, centaurs, dragons-alike, and someone rumored that she took down a group of minotaurs in less than five minutes. In the present, she is an entrepreneur who owns this very gym.”

“Wow... Really?”

Sierra grinned and pointed behind me. Glancing over my shoulder, the massive glass display where tons of golden trophies and medals were exhibited on the shelves mesmerized me. I never saw so many awards in my life. My curiosity got the best of me, and I looked back at this well-known dragon. The crowd of creatures dispersed, giving me a perfect view of her.

The first things I noticed about her were the height and color. She was probably around 6′5 with defined muscles that I had never seen a woman harbor before. Her musculature could put some of the men to shame. Her color was a snow-white one, with red spikes on her forearms that looked like precious jewels in the light. Her hair was as black as the ink and cut into a short modern style — very short on the sides and much longer on the top. Sharp red horns in intricate shapes came from underneath dark tresses. She had sharp eyes, like Asians and thin lines tugged into a firm line. Her features were anything but feminine. She radiated masculinity, especially by how she kicked and punched the boxing sack. Her dragon tail was long, and it looked like it could do some heavy damage if she hit you with it. The dragon’s wings were closed, resting on her back. She wore black baggy sweats, red sneakers, and a black sports bra that hugged her voluptuous breasts.

I gulped down as I took in her well-defined six-pack and V-line. Her white scales were glistening in the sunlight peeking through the glass walls of the gym. Her clawed hands were balled into fists and covered with hand wraps. Each time she delivered a punch or kick, the muscles underneath her skin flexed. I never saw a woman with shoulders as broad as hers or her biceps — they bulged with so much strength it was hard to look away. Her expression was drawn in one of full concentration.

“She truly is something. I bet she has men all over her.” I spoke my thoughts aloud, and Sierra gave a nervous chuckle, rubbing the back of her neck.

“Not really,” Sierra told me, and I raised an eyebrow.

“Really? Why?”

“You’d be surprised to find out men don’t dig overly masculine women. Yes, they do like some fierceness here and there, but... what’s too much it’s too much.”

“That’s a bit too harsh.” I kind of pitied Skylar now. Everyone deserves a chance.

“Speaking of harshness. That’s what she is, and another reason why men avoid her. She’s very abrasive and cold, to the point you may think she has a problem with you. That dragon is simply unapproachable.” Sierra added before sipping on her protein shake.

“I am sure that’s only rumors. Underneath all that muscle and fighting spirit, there must be feminine energy.” I assured Sierra, who chuckles, shaking her head.

“I doubt it. Oh!... Watch out... Here she comes.” Sierra whispered and quickly made herself seem busy with her phone. I didn’t understand this sudden reaction from my werewolf friend, who always looked people in the eye with confidence and a bubbly personality. She acted like she was afraid or anxious to be spotted by Skylar.

Hearing the heavy footsteps approaching us, I glanced to my left to right as Skylar approached us — since people had to pass the gym bar to get to the locker rooms. The moment I turned my head, my blue eyes locked with fiery red ones. They looked like the lava of a volcano, so hot yet cold at the same time. Skylar glanced at me as she passed us, and I offer a small, polite smile.

Her reaction baffled me as her lips curled into a snarl, giving me a harsh look from above.

“Wizard...” she muttered under her breath before passing us and heading to the locker rooms. Her voice was so guttural, lacking that gentle vibe a woman has in her tone. I never heard a woman with such a deep voice. It sounded like it was cracking along the syllables.

I snapped out of the shock and looked at Sierra, who gave me a knowing look.

“Told you so.”
