Laura 1/2
1: Laura
I woke up to the sound of my mom screaming my name. “Laura!! Laura!!” I rubbed my eyes and opened them only to find myself still in this shit hole of a trailer. I can’t believe we’re living in a fucking trailer. I get that we have no money, but are we really so broke that we can’t afford running water? I got off my makeshift bed that was on the floor and made my way into the very small kitchen. My mom was making breakfast. I rolled my eyes and walked past her. “Wait Laura!!” “No mom! I don’t have anything to say to you!” “Laura I know ever since I divorced your father things have been…well, not good, but you can at least sit down and enjoy breakfast with your mother.”
“I don’t want it. I wish dad won custody of me.” She looked at me with a very hurt expression. I could feel the tears coming. I ran out of the trailer, not looking back. Should I just runway? Should I dye my hair again to get on her nerves? I’m getting sick of pink now. I don’t care anymore. I don’t care about her. I don’t care about this trailer. I don’t care about anything! I just want to run away from all of this. Why can’t I just run away? I looked up at the sky and sighed. All of a sudden, I heard thunder. It startled me so I closed my eyes for a brief second, thinking I was going to get hit by it. When I opened my eyes I looked around to see myself in some random house.
“Where the fuck am I?!” I said aloud while still in shock. “Oh Laura, you’re up.” I looked to my left to see my mom, but a much younger version. She looks to be about 30 when my mom is in her 50s. “Mom?!?!” “Yes dear? Is there something wrong?” I looked down at her outfit. She had on a tight white shirt, with blue skinny jeans, and leg warmers. It looked so outdated, like she was in some old-fashioned movie. “What are you wearing?!” I yelled. “Oh, you like it? It’s the style nowadays.” “No, it's definitely not!” “Its not? But all my friends from work wear this.” “They do?!”
I asked in geinuine disbelief. “Yes, oh, it’s time for school. Get ready!” “But, I dropped out of school remember?” “What nonsense are you talking about?! Get ready for school young lady!” “O-Okay…” What the hell is going on? Why does my mom look like a Mexican version of Olivia Newton-John when she was in her 20s? I looked around the house trying to navigate where my room was. It was a very big house. Is this a dream? It must be, we’re not rich at all. I turned around and saw a set of stairs, and my mouth instantly shot open. “We have stairs?!” I yelled out. “Hurry up Laura!” My mom yelled out, “Ah, okay!” I responded.
I ran upstairs and looked to my left, then to my right. I go to the right then walked down the hallway and I found a purple door. That’s my favorite color, so I guess this is my room. I opened it and saw everything I’ve ever wanted in one room. This definitely must be a dream. It had purple walls, purple sheets, a purple carpet, and purple curtains. It was amazing. I go to my closet and saw a purple shirt and blue jeans. I put them on and a pair of black boots. I ran downstairs and my mom pushed me towards the door. “Let’s go! Hurry!” “Okay okay!” I don’t know why, but this dream is kind of exciting.
I stepped outside to see a red 1985 Corvette. “No way! This is such a cool car!” “No time to bask in awe, get in, you're already late.” “Okay!” I hopped in and we started driving. As we drove I looked around at the people and the atmosphere. Did I travel back to the 80s or something? This was a very cool dream to say the least. After about 10 minutes, we made it to the school. It had a very old aesthetic. “Wow…” I said in awe. “Get out, I have work.” She said in a hurried tone. “Alright alright.” I got out and closed the door. As soon as I shut it, she took off.
What the hell. It’s like she’s a completely different person. “Hey Laur!” I looked in front of me and saw a pretty girl with brown hair, and peach skin. She’s wearing a blue shirt with a collar, and a black skirt. She had a goodie two shoes vibe. “Oh…uh hey…you.” I didn’t even know her name… “You? You mean Amanda? You know your best friend? She’s forgotten me, oh gosh, I’m going to pass out from the shock.” She said in a joking way. “Haha, of course I didn’t forget you, Amanda.” “You usually call me Manda, are you okay?” “Oh! Y-Yeah! I'm just tired…Manda.” I guess we're best friends now? It’s funny though, I thought we usually dream about people we’ve met before. I shrugged that thought off and she put her arm around mine.
She looked at me suspiciously. Then smiled and said, “Let’s go already, did you have breakfast?” “Oh, uh not, not yet,” I replied. “Let’s get breakfast then,” she said grabbing my arm and strutting forward. I was dragged along and we walked side by side. “Did you do the homework?” She asked. “H-Homework?!” “Typical Laur, not doing the homework.” “H-Hey, it’s not my fault, I just forgot.” “Yeah yeah...oh my God. Don’t look now, but Jeromy is staring at you again.” I looked around and she immediately grabbed my face. “I said don’t look now!!” My cheeks automatically turned red. I forgot to mention; I’m bisexual.
“What’s wrong? Why are you so red?” She asked. “U-Uh…it’s nothing!” I pushed her hands off and looked away. Damn, why is my quote on quote best friend so pretty?! “Anyways, I know you’ve liked him for a long time. Oh no, he’s coming over here!” My eyes get wide and I hear a, “Hey,” from behind me. I turned around to see a boy with brown hair, and brown skin like mine. Not to mention, he had the stereotypical fuck boy face. It sucks because he was my type too. I guess I’m a sucker for brown hair. “H-Hi,” I said nervously. “I heard you were interested in me.” “WHAT?” I yelled out. Everyone looked at me and I looked away.
“Calm down Laur, this is your chance!” Manda told me. “Um, y-yeah…I’m…interested.” “Cool, you should come to my party on Friday then.” “F-Friday? O-Okay…” I looked at Manda and whispered in her ear, “What day is it again?” “It’s Wednesday silly,” she responded. “Oh yeah, Wednesday.” I looked back at Jeremy and said, “I’ll definitely be there.” “Cool, you should come too Manda.” “Okay sure!!” We both looked at each other and smiled. She grabbed my arm and asked, “Can I come over today?”
I thought about my trailer and was about to say no, when I realized the house I have now is huge. “Yeah of course!” “Awesome! We can have another sleepover!” A sleepover? I’ve never had one before… “YES,” I instantly yelled out. She gets taken aback by my outburst and laughs. I turned red and looked down out of embarrassment. Well, this isn’t going well. “Come on, let’s go get breakfast,” she said. “Okay,” I replied. She grabbed my arm again and we walked to the cafeteria. I’m really loving this dream. After school ended, we met up at the entrance. I looked around but I didn’t see my mom. “What are you waiting for?” Manda asked. “Huh?” I responded.
“Lets go to your house.” “Wait, we’re walking?” “Duh, we always do. It only takes like 30 minutes.” “30 minutes?!” I yelled out. I’ve never walked that long before. I don’t even exercise. “Don’t act like you didn’t know silly, lets go!” She grabbed my arm and we started walking. About 5 minutes into the walk I started to pant aggressively. “You need to work out more hun, let’s go!” “Hun?” I asked while stopping in my tracks; she just called me hun. “Yes, hun, you know I call everyone that. Are you seriously okay?” “O-Oh, yeah I knew that. Sorry, I hit my head this morning…” I said trying not to give anything away.
She looked at me suspiciously, then laughed. “Okay, hurry up, I want to get there before dark!” “Okay okay!” After about 25 more minutes we made it back to my house. I instantly collapsed onto the doorstep. “Oh stop complaining, get up and lets go inside.” She said, as she grabbed my arm and lifted me up. We went inside and she immediately ran up the stairs. She’s definitely been here before. She even knows which room is mine. We go inside and I closed the door. She goes to the closet and pulls out a record player. “Woah!” I yelled out not knowing I had one.
“Will you relax, I’m going to play some music.” She sets the player on my purple desk and goes to the closet again to pull out a box of records. She shifted through them and picked one out. She grabbed it and put it in the record player. She pressed start and a very familiar songs started to play. I know it because my mom loved this song. It was “I’m still standing”, by Elton John. She started to dance in a very corny way. I laughed; then she pulled me over to her and started dancing with me. I laughed harder and danced with her. “I’m still standing!!” We both yelled out in unison. So far, this is the best dream I’ve ever had.
I twirled her around and she chuckled. We kept dancing until the end of the song. Then we collapsed onto the bed. We’re both out of breath at this point. She looked at me and I looked at her. She’s so pretty…she really is my type. I wanted to kiss her; but that would be weird right? I mean she thinks we’re best friends, but she’s kind of a stranger to me. Even though I feel like I’ve known her for years. “I’ll get us some water,” She said while getting up and leaving the room. After a couple minutes she came back with two cups and a big bag of lays chips. I laughed and she handed me a cup. I chugged it instantly.
All that walking and dancing has finally hit me. “I think I lost 80 pounds,” I told her, “Well, you can gain it back by eating these chips, hehe.” She said with a smile. “Cute,” I said unconsciously, “Hm?” “AH, I-I m-meant, uh, nothing, le-lets just eat…haha…” “Oh..okay,” she said as she smiled before opening the chips. I sighed in relief and looked at her. She started munching on the chips, so I joined in. “Won’t your parents be worried if you don’t call them?” I asked her. She looked at me with a very hurt expression. “What?” I asked. “I can’t believe you asked me that. You know my parents died in a car accident.”
My eyes went wide, and I stopped chewing. I couldn’t say a damn thing. Fuck… “Um…I-I know…uh, I-I’m sorry…I guess it slipped my mind. M-My memory hasn’t been the best recently…” “Yeah, I can tell, you’ve been acting very strange since this morning. Are you really okay?” She asked, rubbing my arm. Please stop giving me mixed signals. “Uh, yeah, totally fine, I just haven’t been sleeping all that well.” That was true, ever since we moved into that trailer. My insomnia was at an all-time high. “Aww, hun, you know you can talk to me right?”
I smiled at her. I’ve never had a friend like Manda. “Thank you, and I know.” She smiled and hugged me. My face immediately got hot. “Oh! What are you wearing to Jeremy’s party?!” She asked while looking at me with a surprised expression. “Uh…I don’t know yet. Help me?” “Of course! Fashion show time!” She yelled out. She opened my closet and threw some clothes at me. I laughed and we tried on everything in my closet. I had a lot of silly stuff. Like silver disco pants and a pink fluffy jacket.
Manda and I finally agreed on something. I’m wearing a purple crop top with blue skinny jeans. She’s wearing a green crop top with black skinny jeans. “We’re going to be the sexiest ones there!!” She yelled out. I laughed and said, “Hell yeah!!” We joked and laughed some more. The night went on and we got ready for bed. I then realized; my mom wasn’t home yet. I was worried so I went downstairs while Manda was in the bed. I looked around the dark house, and she was nowhere to be seen. I looked at the clock on the wall. It shocked me, because it said 2:18 am.
Where in the fuck was she?! I started to get really worried now. I then heard a car pull up. I looked outside, and it was her. "Thank God," I said aloud. After a couple of minutes she came inside as drunk as can be. “Mom?” “Oh hey…Laur bear. You’re supposed…to be…sleeping..” “Mom you reek of alcohol.” “I know…I went…drinking with…Rob..” “Who the hell is Rob?!” “My new…boo..” She said, stumbling past me. I sighed and helped her go up the steps. We walked to her room and she collapsed onto the bed. Instantly falling asleep. Seriously, who the hell are you?
This person was not my mom, my mom doesn’t drink. This dream so far has not been very accurate. Then again, when are dreams ever truly accurate? I sighed and left the room. I closed the door behind me and went back to my room. Manda was already sleeping. I smiled and turned off the lights. I laid on the bed next to her and she hugged me. I tried to keep my cool, but it was very hard to when you’re attracted to someone. I put it in the back of my mind and drifted off to sleep. The next morning both me and Manda got ready for school. We ran downstairs to see my mom drinking a coffee with a white robe on. She also had on a white face mask and her hair was wrapped in a towel.
Manda and I both chuckled to ourselves. “Stop laughing, I made some breakfast. Eat it, or don’t, I could care less.” She said while walking back upstairs. This lady was truly not my mom… she’d never say that. “Laur? You okay?” “Huh? Oh..yeah I’m good, let’s eat.” “Okie dokie!” Manda replied. After we ate, we left the house and walked to school again. Of course, I was dying midway through. I guess my mom taking me by car was a one-time thing. I sighed and we made it to the school building. Manda greeted some of her peers. I do too, but I have no idea who they are. Although, they seem to know me.
We walked inside and go to first period. I hate school so much, this is the reason why I dropped out. The only reason why I’m staying is because of Manda. Otherwise, I would’ve been gone by now. The school day continued and it finally reached its end. Manda and I met up at the entrance. “Hey Laur! Let’s go! We need to do our nails for the party tomorrow!” I laughed and she locked her arm with mine, dragging me along once again. We go back to my house and Manda instantly ran inside. She looked inside the cabinet in the kitchen, and pulled out some ravioli. She put it in the microwave and heated it up.
Seriously, how many times has she been over here to know where everything is?! We sat down at the counter to eat. She goes on and on about all the boys she thought was cute. I just sat there half listening half staring at her face. “Awe wu lisweninm?!” I'm guessing she asked if I was listening. “Oh yeah definitely, and don't chew and talk at the same time.” I said in a joking way. She pouts and continued eating. She looked back at me and I laughed. “What?” She asked. “You have food all over your mouth.” “Oh! Get it for me then,” she said leaning in closer. I get taken aback and put my thumb against her mouth to wipe off the excess ravioli.
She looked at me and asks, “Well is it gone?” “Uh…yeah, all gone.” I said smiling, she smiled back and we finish eating. I grabbed both of our bowls and put them in the sink to wash later. Then she grabbed my hand and yanked me upstairs. “Hey what color should we paint our nails?!” “I want purple!” I yelled out, “You always want purple!” We both laughed and she brings out some nail polish from my closet. Just how much stuff do I have in this closet?! “I want green to go with my outfit. Let’s paint each other’s nails!” “Okay!” I yelled out in a very excited tone. I loved this. It’s like I’m in my own little world with my own little girlfriend. Even though Manda has no idea that I like her.
After we paint our nails, Manda grabbed another record and put on some more music. “Every breath you take” by the Police starts playing. I guess she loved old music. Now that I think about it, it does look like we’re in the 80s. Which is probably why I love this dream a lot. I’ve always wanted to experience the life of an 80s teenager. I thought the 80s was so cool. “What are you thinking about?” Manda asked while looking at me. “Nothing, I just…love this.” She chuckled and grabbed me; we started dancing and laughing with each other. I really hope this dream never ends.
