a discarded letter
"My dearest Alice,
I have shattered your heart beyond repair. No amount of apologies will sweep the tears from your flushed cheeks, or bring that loyalty back to your starlit smile.
I am now the villain in your eyes.
I have spent far too long pretending I was the perfect husband to you. I have kept your eyes shielded from the truth because I believed it was better for the both of us. If you didn't know the truth about me, about you, and about this big old house; than we could of continued living this fairytale life where the both of us were happy. Where you were happy. That was all that mattered to me. I didn't care what I had to do to ensure your happiness, what lengths I had to go to keep you mine. I am not proud of the things I have done, of the lies I have told. At the time I believed they were necessary, because I didn't once think that you would find out everything. I seemed to have forgotten just how smart you are.
And yet, you granted me my last wish before our world came crashing to an end. A last dance. The last time you and I danced was a month ago, can you believe that? It was our two year anniversary, I casted a ball with the finest wine and champagne my wealth could buy, I invited all of our friends and family to celebrate with us. We were the center of attention as we danced, and it seemed like it was just the two of us dancing the night away. There was love in your eyes, and adoration in mine. I wished it would never end. That that song would never stop, and we would stay in each other's arms for eternity. Just you and me, until the end of time.
But it came to an end. I should've noticed the off-putting look in your gaze, the way you kept glancing over your shoulder, as if you were searching for someone. But I didn't. I didn't realize that that was the day everything went wrong. The day the truth was no longer shielded from your eyes. The day he appeared – and ruined everything.
I held you impossibly close as we swayed to the music, and I have convinced myself it is that day we danced on our anniversary. But you tremble in my grasp. I lock eyes with yours and they are filled with pain. I raise a hand to wipe the tears from your cheek and you flinch. But do you remember? That day, we also kissed. We sealed the dance with a kiss as the music came to a slow stop and everyone clapped for us. Because we were a happy couple. A happy couple that was in love.
"Forgive me, Alice." the only words I find fitting as I place a final kiss on your crimson lips. A seal to the end of our fairytale life as it crashes down around us.
Yours forever, Axel"
