The Beginning of the End
Sarah McAdams
I reached the station at exactly 1 pm to submit my statement regarding the Jake Reynolds missing case. Lauren Hawkins, the female police officer looks at me like a hawk ready to kill its prey in a single attack. Her gaze surrounds the whole room before landing on me, she gives me a straight poker face and seats herself onto the chair opposite to mine. The walls themselves give a character that they’ve seen many more of people like me. Amidst the disastrous interior of the room which is expected from a police station makes me angry, frustrated to be here. Strict Lauren giving me a disgusted look before rolling her eyes at me as I give her my nervous smile. Just when she started to talk, the door bashed right in front of us giving Lauren a terrible impression that she’s not as important as she thinks of herself. The officer entered the room and gave Lauren a nod with an apologetic apology, moved further and placed a file at the desk and went straight for the way out without giving any attention to Lauren.
Feeling extremely anxious I couldn’t help but just keep a smile on my face. Lauren gives me her attention and says, ‘So, Sarah McAdams, right? In just a moment of time we’ll get started with your statement. You are advised to not keep any details out and say everything you know about Jake.’ Literally, her face says it all. She stares at me with a glare that gives me every clear impression that she’s not backing off, at least without knowing the truth. I wait for a good moment of time creating courage in my mind and say, ‘Yeah, I’m Sarah and with no surprise I don’t know anything. I really don’t.’ Trying to keep my voice as normal as I can I nervously avoid looking in her eye, but I had nothing to be afraid of and looked right into her blue eyes. She looked above me at the CCTV camera and bolted out of the room. After a long time, all the anxiety came down and turned blood in my eyes. I turn off to the camera and shout, ‘Just let me go. You have no right to keep me here. I am innocent. You know that. I’ll tell you everything.’ No response. No freaking RESPONSE.
James Luther, the blonde head of the department and in-charge of the Jake Reynolds’s case comes walking into the room. He takes his seat and gives me a no-nonsense look. His hair is all combed out and seem disciplined. He looks at his watch and speaks, ‘Sarah, let’s cut to chase. I’m not going to waste my time. Why did you kill Jake Reynolds?’ I give him a puzzled look and say with an anger in my voice, ‘Sir, I didn’t say I killed Jake! I said I’ll tell you everything. They’re both different.’ James looking interesting in my talk, says, ‘You better be honest, kid.’
