Chapter 1

DREAMS DO COME TRUE

After you have a nightmare your parents always say:

“Don’t worry, it’s just a nightmare” Don’t believe a word they say. Dreams do come true, well at least for me it does. This all started on the 23rd of December 1987 I was sitting next to the fireplace when I started to feel sleepy. Like any other normal person, I told myself it was time to go to bed. I went up to my room and went to bed. Telling myself I would feel less sleepy in the morning.

IN THE WORLD OF THE DREAMS

I woke up at my school. For some abnormal reason, nobody was there. It was just me. Huh, strange I thought. Scattered among the hallways were chairs and tables. They were flipped over and broken.

“What is going on,” I asked myself

I told myself to stay put and wait but some other part of my mind told me to explore and find out what happened. I followed my mind and s started to explore the school. Even though I knew the school it felt unfamiliar. I reached the locker room of the school when I heard a scuttle in one of the many lockers. Curious I decided to open the locker. When I opened it I saw that there was a rat in a shoebox in the locker.

“What the” I said.

Never in the history of me going to school have I ever encountered a dead rat in a shoebox. On top of the box was a note.

It read:

Hello Jake. If you are reading this note then you have found me. LOOK BEHIND YOU. I followed the note and looked behind me. There was a strange cloaked figure down the hallway waving to me. He had large beady eyes that never blinked. He had sharp fingernails that looked like a murder weapon. I shivered. Who could that possibly be? I knew that sometimes parents entered the school to give them there children lunch but never have I ever seen this

man.

THE REAL WORLD

I woke up. What was that dream I just had? My clothes were drenched. I opened the blinds and saw that it was daytime.

Oh well, better get ready for school, I thought. When I get home from school I’ll tell my mum about the dream. She’11 know what to do. Parents always know what to do right?

When I got home from school I found that absolutely no one was in sight. I turned the corner and saw that there were some tables scattered everywhere. Some flipped over others broken. I wandered aimlessly around until my eyes spied upon the locker room. As I entered I heard a scuttle in one of the lockers. Curious, I went up to the locker. I went to open the locker when I noticed a stench. It smelt like something was rotting. I opened the locker and saw a dead rat in a shoebox. “What the hell?” I said. LOOK BEHIND YOU

I did what the note said and turned around. In the hallway was a man wearing a black coat and a top hat. I was pretty sure he was wearing a velvet top hat. The man waved at me and approached me ever so slowly. I cowered and realised that I was trapped. “Please no,” I said. I shielded my eyes when suddenly…

Then one of the teachers approached me.

“What are you doing here Jake? Aren’t you supposed to be in class?” The teacher asked.

“Yeah, but I don’t know where my class is, I said

Massive lie I had the entire school mapped out in my head. The teacher escorted me to my classroom and opened the door. Letting me in. One thing I hate about being late is when you enter a class everyone always looks at you in a way that I personally don’t like, especially the teacher. I took my usual seat at the front of the class. Next to the smelly kid and the smart kid. I laid my books down and got ready for the teacher to announce what we were doing.

“Class today we will be doing some creative writing come with me to the writing room,” The teacher said in his unusually crackly voice.

Everyone followed the teacher to the writing room… What really sucked is that the writing room is all the way at the edge of the building. When we got there we were told to sit down and start writing. In previous classes, we had been taught the elements of a narrative story. As we sat down in front of the clunky manual typewriter I had a really good idea. It just popped in my head. Once I started I couldn’t stop.

IT’S IN YOUR HOUSE

WRITTEN BY JAKE FRITZ

Harry was awoken by the sound of something smashing. “wha? what was that?” He asked. No one answered I guess that’s what you expect when you live alone he thought. He reached for his glasses but couldn’t find them. Well, guess I’ve just got to do without them he thought. He stumbled and bumbled down the stairs. He could barely see what was going on. He knew that if he miscalculated if he thought there was one more step than there actually was he would be screwed. Yes! he made it down the stairs in one piece. He sighed and went down into the basement where the noise had come from.

“Hello, is there anyone down here, He asked.

He was basically just talking to the dark.

“HARRY WHERE ARE YOU?” A voice asked.

“Who are you?” Harry replied.

“DEATH” Ir replied.

Harry shuddered. Was this thing really death? Or was it just lying? Then he felt something went through himself. It felt like something was making him swallow pins and needles. The cops showed up several hours later. Someone had complained about a large clang. They found him with needles and pins in his mouth. When they x-rayed his dead body they found that he had swallowed pins and needles. THE END

When it was time for everyone to share their stories everyone liked mine. At the end of class while we were walking back some kids had come up to me to congratulate me.

“Wow, Jake really cool story. It was really scary, One said

“Make more!” Another one said.

For the first time in a while, I actually felt good about myself.

I had found my purpose was to write chilling tales

for the public. When I got home my mum was sitting at the table paying the bills. I decided that the dream was nothing to worry about. It was all just a dream.

“Mum! Mum!” I exclaimed.

“Yes, honey?” She replied.

“I know what I want to be when I’m older!” I said.

My mum’s head popped through the doorway her eyes wide open.

“I want to write stories!” I said to her.

Expecting her to congratulate me and ask why I wanted to do what I wanted to write stories she instead said this:

“Oh, you know your dad was a writer,” She said in a soft voice

“What really?” I said.

She nodded and went back to cooking dinner. I raced up to my room and pulled out my notebook from under my desk. I grabbed a pen from the pencil pot downstairs and opened the notebook up to its first page.

IDEA BOOK

An Alian space ship crash lands on earth

A kid moves into a new house strange stuff starts to happen.

Some people worship a god called Magister Somniorum

I paused at the word I wasn’t supposed to write that word. I was supposed to write ‘Molusk’. I crossed out Magister Somniorum

and put ‘Molusk’ down. I did this for most of the day. Until dinner rolled around I decided to share them with my mum to see what she thought about them. “An alien spaceship crash lands on earth,” said.

“That sounds like a pretty cool idea,” She says to me.

I couldn’t tell if she was just saying that to make me happy or if she actually thought it was a good idea.

“I was supposed to put down ‘Molusk’ but instead I put down ’Magister Somniorum”

My mum pasued at Magister Somniorum

“Where’d you get that word from?” She said.

I shrugged.

“Come on finish your dinner chatterbox, She teased.

I ate my Curry and put the bowl in the sink. When I finished I went up to my room and continued banging out awesome ideas. My mum eventually came

into my room and told me that it was late. I sighed and went to bed flicked my lamp off and crawled into bed.

“Goodnight honey, She said.

“Goodnight,” I replied.

My mum smiled and closed the door. I closed my eyes and went to sleep.

IN THE WORLD OF DREAMS

Something was chasing me. I don’t know what it was but I knew one thing for sure if I stopped running it would kill me and rip me into little shreds. I entered the cornfields, the corn smacking me in the face. Luckily I knew my way around the cornfield. Like I said I have a great sense of direction. But these cornfields were different to the ones I knew so well. They were different. Before I knew it I was trapped with no way out surrounded by tall stems of corn. I gave up.

IN THE REAL WORLD

I woke up in a pool of sweat. It was like someone collected their sweat and poured it on me at night while I was sleeping and dreaming if you could even call it a dream. That was more like a nightmare. As usual, my mum was at work folding clothes. A very boring job. I woke up put my school uniform on and went downstairs for breakfast. I got out the cereal and put it on the table. On the table was a gift. A strange box wrapped in gift wrap. There was a card it

read:

Dear Jake,

Hey honey! When you said you wanted to be a writer I thought about it. Eventually, I came to the conclusion: If that’s what you want to be then it would be wrong for me to dismiss it and make you do something else. Here’s a typewriter! Enjoy. From Mum ΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟΧΟ

I was amazed. Typewriters are very expensive. I saw one at the shops that was $300! Oh well, I guess I shouldn’t complain. I tore open the brightly coloured gift wrap. I opened the case. It was a Smith Corona Electric. Forget about breakfast. I’m bringing this to school. I put my bag on my back and put the case in my satchel. Phew, was it heavy. Somehow I managed to lug the case. to school.

MEANWHILE AT FRITZ THUNDERBURG’S HOME

“Honey, do you have your lunch?” Asked Fritz’s mum.

“Of course I do ma!” Replied Fritz.

Fritz opened the door and set off for school. He would take the 4578 bus and that would take him to the front of the school. He waited in the bus stop shelter for a very long time. He noticed a sign on the top of the bus stop.

“Sorry but this bus stop is being relocated, sorry for any inconvenience.

“Inconvenience?! Yeah, well this place is full of it!” Exclaimed FRitz. I guess I’ll just have to walk through the cornfield Fritz thought. He made his way towards the corn when he realised a tall lank man in black following him. If a stranger follows you run. His mum told him. So Fritz did exactly what his mum told him to do. He ran for his life.

Eventually, Fritz stopped running. He was lost with no way out.

He had nowhere to go. Nowhere to run.

When I got to school I went to look for

to look for a place to plug the machine in. Nowhere. Damn. I really wanted to do some writing in the morning. There was only one thing to do. Wait for the morning bell to go. After what felt like years of waiting the morning bell finally went.

“Thank god, any longer I would’ve gone insane,” I joked.

First up we had a free period? The teachers told us that there was a power outage last night and they were still trying to get everything back in working order. According to some of the kids the heater shut down. That was bad because it was din the middle of winter.d I grabbed my typewriter and plugged it into one of the many spare power sockets. Then I started to write. Then I had an idea. I would put all of my dreams into one book! What a brilliant idea.

DREAMS

WRITTEN BY JAKE FRITZ

I was going to school when I saw a strange man in a black cloak near one of the bus stops. I remembered something my mum told me. If you see someone you don’t know run for your god damn life. So that’s what I did. I ran for my goddamn life. The only place I could go was the cornfield. We lived basically in the middle of nowhere so we didn’t have any neighbours. I ran through the cornfeild the corn whacking my face. I didn’t care. The only thing I cared about was surviving. Eventually, I lost the strange man but now a new problem emerged. I was lost with no way out.

“Hello? Is anyone here? I’m lost can you please help me?” I said

No reply. I sat down defeated. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. Nowhere to go.

That was all I got to write as the teachers told

the teachers told us that they had fixed the power and rebooted all of the systems. I put the typewriter back in it’s case. Now we had to go to science. Possibly the worst subject in history. Well, in my opinion. Everyone else probably has different opinions but that’s just my opinion. As the teacher droned on and on about the periodic table I started to get sleepy. The teacher doesn’t have a very interesting voice. I tried to battle it at first. Eventually, I just gave in to the sleepiness.

IN THE WORLD OF THE DREAMS

A man was driving his truck along the main road. Something was in the boot of the truck trying to get out. It wanted out. The man winced and started to cry. The tears fell down his cheeks.

“It’s all I can do. We can die together, The man said

The man closed his eyes and let go of the steering wheel. The car plummeted off the cliff and smashed into one of the rocks below. The man’s head jerked forward and smashed into the steering wheel. His jaw was ripped off. Blood was oozing out his face. Then he heard the boot of the car open. A body tumbled out of the boot and laid lifelessly and the sand. Somehow the man was still alive. He looked back at the body. It was gone. The man had failed his mission. He was going to die for nothing.

The man closed his eyes and tried to die. He couldn’t. Something inside of him wanted to still be alive. The man dug into his pocket and pulled out a pocket knife. He aimed the knife at his heart. He stabbed himself

IN THE REAL WORLD

I woke up my head jerked forward. I was still in science. The teacher was still droning on. Then the bell for lunch rang. Phew glad I’m out of that bore-fest. I thought. I exited the room with my typewriter in my hands. It was time for lunch which meant that I would have to go outside and play with the other kids. Which usually ended up with him being told to go away. As soon as he stepped outside a bunch of kids came up to him and asked questions.

“Why are you so good at writing?” One asked.

“I guess I just have a natural talent,” I replied.

“Mr Goodman says that you should be expelled,” One person said “What?! How is that fair?” I replied.

“He thinks that stuff like that shouldn’t be allowed in the classroom, The person said.

“No!” One of the kids said.

Wow, I didn’t know people liked my work so much. Then I felt sleepy. Despite the rest I got in science I still felt sleepy. What the hell was happening? I thought.

“Excuse me guys, I said.

I went inside the school. All of this attention was very strange.

I needed to get away from all of the people. Then the bell for the end of lunch ended. Soon the hallway was flooded with kids. For once I was first in class

“Hello, Jake,” The teacher said.

“Hello,” I said.

I took my usual seat at the front of the class and waited for everyone else to get inside. Once everyone got in the teacher started off with a statement

“Now if you choose to believe this then that is fine if you don’t believe it that is fine also. In WW2 the Russians decided that they needed something to keep their soldiers awake. Nazi Germany was also partaking in such experiments. They were much more… brutal. Anyway, the Russians authorised R-sync experiments to be in control of the experiment. Excited, R-sync took 12 prisoners of war. They were mostly Germans. The sole survivor of this grizzly experiment was Italian. They alluding to R-sync hastily working on a gas. Now they needed to experiment on the prisoners. So they grabbed the 12 unlucky souls and put them in a metal cube. The first 9 days were uneventful. They had managed to stay awake for the 9 days they were imprisoned. But on the 10th day the men started to show some….. abnormalities. They didn’t talk to the scientists. Only silence. Then on the 11th day, the screams erupted. At 2:09 am the men started to scream and howl. Immediately the scientists shut off the gas and went inside. They saw that only one man (the Italian) was hiding under the bed. When they asked what he was doing all by himself he shuddered and told them what he saw.

“Out of the blue, they just went feral. They started to rip each other apart. Amidst all of the chaos, I his under the bed waiting for it to stop. Then it stopped when you guys walked in. That’s all,”

But later on the man came out and said that months before he was chosen he had dreams that came true. He had a dream before that the men were ripping each other apart. I want to let you guys decide. Was it real or was it completely bogus? Talk to the person next to you,” The teacher said.

So, the man had dreams that came true. I thought. My dreams are coming true as well. I thought. No, that’s outrageous. Dreams don’t just randomly come true. Or do they? I turned to the person next to me.

“I think it might have historical elements in it but most of it seemed pretty fake to me, The kid said.

“Yeah, I pretty much agree with you, I told the kid.

The kid seemed pretty happy with my answer and turned around and talked to one of his friends. For the rest of the class we had free period so I pulled out my typewriter and plugged it in and started writing

DREAMS

WRITTEN BY JAKE FRITZ

Late at night a man with an old battered truck drove down ANZAC HIGHWAY. The man gripped the steering wheel tightly. Beads of sweat dripped down his forehead and got sweat in his eyes. The bangs from the boot were putting him off of his driving. In a few seconds though he would lose concentration. BANG! The bang frightened him and made him drive off a nearby cliff. It seemed like the man was floating in mid-air. It felt like he was in space. For once in a very long time he felt like everything was ending. All his troubles were going to wash away. Then the truck hit one of the rocks which sent the man flying into the steering wheel. His jaw smashed into the steering wheel, and his jaw was severed and fell into his lap. Blood oozed out of the wound dripping on his crisp white shirt. The man couldn’t cry for help. The man wasn’t dead yet, He will be soon. The man tried to die but he couldn’t. Some part inside of him wanted to still be alive. Until something whispered in his ear.

time to go to sleep,”

The man closed his eyes and faded into the abyss

The bell for the end of the day sounded and I packed up my things and said goodbye to the teacher. When I got home my mum was sitting at the table.

“Hey, honey guess what? A boy’s body was found in the cornfield today. Also a man who allegedly drove his car off a cliff is also dead, She told me

My eyes widened.

“Oh, sorry! Didn’t mean to frighten you,” She said

It wasn’t that. I saw those people die while they were dying. I have to get help.

“What are we having for dinner?” I asked,

I was trying to change the subject.

“We’re having take-out tonight,” She replied.

“Wanna go get it now?” She asked.

“Of course!” I said back.

Occasionally we get fast food. We exited the house and got in her old Toyota Camry. It was a crap car but it was all we could afford. Once we got there he parked in an empty car space and got out of the car.

“So, what do you want?” My mum asked.

“Could I just get a cheeseburger I’m not that hungry,” I replied. She nodded and we entered the half-deserted Mcdonald’s. When we entered the the place one of the employees looked up. “Hello, what would you like?” The bored employee asked.

“One cheeseburger and another cheeseburger without pickles please,

My mum said to the employee. We took a seat near the edge of the shop and waited for our food to be served.

“I need to tell you something about your dad,” My mum asked.

“Oh yeah? What is it?” I replied.

“Well, when you were three he took off. I haven’t seen him since. From what I’ve heard from my friends they said he is a famous author.

11

I just can’t understand why he took off, My mum said.

I could tell;1 she was close to tears so I decided to change the subject. “Hey, mum when you were younger did you work a fast food job?”

I asked. It was a harmless question.

“Yeah, I did I worked at Burger King,” She said.

I nodded.

“Was it fun?” I asked

“Well, there were good times and some bad times,” She said.

“It was so long ago I can’t really remember all of them,” She continued.

I nodded again. Pretending to take an interest but actually just thinking about food.

“Here’s your cheeseburgers,” The employee said.

My mum muttered a soft ‘Thank you’ and unwrapped her burger.

She passed me mine and I unwrapped my burger and started to eat it. I took a slurp out of my drink when suddenly I saw that outside was a strange man with a hat on the outside. It was hard to see what the man was wearing but I think it was a black cloak. Hang on, a black coat? He was the man from my dreams! I pretended not to notice the man I didn’t want to ruin the day for my mum. She seemed so happy.

When we got home I was pretty much half asleep. My mum shoved me into bed and pretty soon I fell asleep.

IN THE WORLD OF DREAMS

I was lying in my bed looking up at the ceiling. Dead spiders were hanging in the corner of the roof. Then cracks appeared in the roof. I tried to sit up and inspect the cracks further but I couldn’t sit up I was glued to the bed. Some mysterious force was keeping me from sitting up. It wanted me to stay still. Then I heard moaning from the outside of my window. The window slowly opened and a hand came through the window and landed on the floor. All I could do was watch. Then another hand popped in. Then the head of a strange creature plopped on the floor. It had nine eyes all of which had different eye colours it had a horrible mouth that expanded by the minute. It smelt like a fresh body being buried in a graveyard. Then the legs of the creature fall into the window. The thing stood up its head slammed into the roof. The creature took several long steps to me it’s feet pounding on the floor. I tried to call out for help but my mouth was also glued shut. All I could do was wait for my inevitable demise.

THE END
