Revenge is best set on a Friday 13th

Many years ago, nearly 13 years in fact, I was at a summer camp. I was the only one from a different town from the others, but Mom said it was the closest camp she could find.

I hang out with 13 other kids, 7 girls, 6 boys. We were the only ones at that summer camp. No group leaders, nothing. That was the first thing I noticed when Mom dropped me off, not bothering to say goodbye. But, I must say, I’m glad that I had the freedom. We all had fun there, 3 months of no adults. Sounds like bliss. Except one of the girls.

Her name was Faizah. She liked to think she was the boss and always like to argue with another girl named Ivy. Sometimes I try and stop them, but they say to stop sticking my nose into other people’s business.

Ivy is nice, but she sometimes gets into the wrong side of things.

I share the cabin with the girls. We barely get any sleep since Faizah keeps on saying to us what we did wrong. All through the night.

Usually it’s because of the pranks we like to do to her. Sometimes we lock her in the cabin when she annoys us that night. Well, annoys us more than she already does.

We also join forces with the boys to do some other pranks, like make her climb a tree and we leave her stuck there, until she comes down. Which is usually 6 hours.

That’s only a smidge of the pranks we did.

But one day, on a Friday 13th, I believe we went too far.

It started as usual with Faizah shouting at us because we locked her in again. One of the boys, whose name was Cameron, then told her that we didn’t and it must have been her imagination.

She did not believe him and to punish us, she took our breakfast and threw it in the river. She then spat at us,

“You shall not lie. If I ever see another prank lay on me, you all will be deeply punished.”

She then walked off and left us fourteen, hungry.

“This bitch needs some serious payback,” shouted the boldest of us, a boy names Mike “Who’s with me?”

All of us put our hands up. Even me.

“But it’s not smart to do any pranks we have done before Mike,” the smallest camper, a girl named Tina “She will know.”

Mike thought for a moment before saying “I’ve got an idea, why not we collect her clothes and then threw them in the river, it’ll take her forever to get them out of the river and wash them. I don’t think she’s in the cabin. So, is it a yes?”

We all then nodded but then a mortal fiber went into my brain. A conscious. The voice in my head. It said to me “Revenge has three sides, it will work, it will not or it’ll work too well. Do you really want to hurt when it’s against every mortal fiber in your body?”

I ignored it.

We all then snuck into the girl’s cabin, sure enough, she was not there. We all then grabbed her clothes, making sure none are left behind and then we rushed over to the river and threw them in.

The river was large, as large as a lake, now we all will wait and watch the fireworks happen.

It was at 13:01 when she realised that her clothes went missing. “Where the hell are they?” She shouted at all of us. None of us replied, none of us wanted to give the game away. We were all by the river and she still hasn’t noticed. Well for a few minutes anyway until she shouted “How the hell did they get in that river, oh you all will be in big trouble once I fish then out.”

She then jumped into the river and swam to get her clothes. We all the silently cheered, by our calculations, it will take her 3 hours for her to fish them out and another two with the washing.

We all watched as she tried to get her clothes off the river and get them back to shore. She mumbled something behind gritted teeth as she managed to get some of her clothes out of the river. One of the girls, a Spanish girl names Ana then went to collect her clothes.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Tirarlas en el río.”

Luckily I had Spanish lessons when I was small so I knew what she was talking about.

“Don’t, it’ll take her hours to get all her clothes and you want to make more hard work.”

She then glared at me as she them threw the clothes in the river and said “Nos vamos a vengar de ella pase lo que pase.”

I then sighed before we all heard a scream. Faizah’s screams.

“Just ignore it,” said a boy whose name was Sam “she’s faking it as usual.”

Most of them turned away, except me who then saw why she was screaming. She was tangled in the vines, only her head was bobbing out of the river, struggling to get out.

I wonder what would have happened if I had listened to my head at that moment and helped her. But I think it was my pride that made me not listen to my wise head.

I then heard no more screams. The vines had won. I looked at my watch and saw the time.

13:13 pm.

When my Mom came to collect me a few weeks later, I kept quiet. About the camp. About the river. About the trap.

“You seemed scared, are you alright?” she then said.

“I’m fine,” I lied “I have actually never been better.” She didn’t dare try and start up a conversation with me. I then looked out of the window and I swear I saw. No but that was impossible. I think I saw Faizah. Glaring.

But that was impossible. Or was it?

It had been nearly 13 years since Faizah was in that river and one Friday 13th per year, one of the campers, always seemed to die.

First was a boy named Zack Marshall. He was found, in his family’s washing machine. Drowned in soap.

Next was a girl named Darcy May. She was found, covered in hats, sellotaped around her, causing her breath to run short.

Then it was the first twin, Gregory Friop, who seemed to drown in the bath. Followed by his twin the very next year who was found with a hairband forced between his lungs.

Then it was Ana, who was found with jeans around her neck, like someone who had been hanged. Well she was found hanged.

Then it was a girl named Gemma Maker, who was found with many earrings, jammed down her throat.

Then it was Cameron who was found in a lake, tied down. Tried down by chains.

Then it was Ivy, who was found with a scarf down her neck. It looked too tight on her, reducing her breathing rate until she was no more.

Then it was a man named Harry Small who was found in a dryer, decapitated.

Then it was Mike, who was found tied up, in clothes, with a fishbowl on his head.

Then last year it was Tina, who was found by her eldest daughter, who was five winters old then, with her head was found in the sink, the rest was found in the washing machine.

I know I’ll be next.

I just know it.

She’s saving me for last. I can just feel it.

I’m in my house, all doors and windows locked. I looked at the time. 13:12:50.

She’s coming.

13:12:51

I can feel it.

13:12:52

I then heard the creak of the floorboards.

13:12:53

She’s closer now.

13:12:54

I’m the last one she needs to kill.

13:12:55

I know the end is near.

13:12:56

The guilt is forever in my head.

13:12:57.

I heard the door open.

13:12:58

I heard her voice.

13:12:59

“You will not survive.”

13:13:00

I then turned around and then screamed.
