Chapter 1
Cinnamon Girl
Chapter One
Girl With Cinnamon Colored Skin
It was three years ago, the memories remain vivid and detailed in my mind.
I lived on a small island in Asia. And as far as where it was located, that was all I knew. Not that I even ever bothered to find out, and not that I could.
We were isolated from the rest of the world, and their advancements. It was just me, my family, and my people. Maybe that’s why I was so intrigued by her.
That day, the day I met her. Well, it was like any other day, the birds were out chirping, my mother was scolding my little sister for her usual misdeeds, and my father was off in the forest gathering wood for the fire.
I was tasked with feeding the cows. It was a very fun but stressful job as they were unusually restless. The way they struggled to make it to the pan where their food lay made me miss the times when they weren’t so difficult.
I made my way into the barn to finally get to the bottom of what was irritating them but looking back I probably shouldn’t have done that. I was 16 though, so I didn’t know better. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise when one of them charged at me and in a frail attempt at avoiding the impact, I lunged myself out of the way and landed on my behind.
It was so embarrassing. Thankfully, there was no one around to see that. Or so I thought.
Getting back on my feet was painful, although I landed in manure, which I didn’t know if it made the situation worse or better. It still hurt.
That was when I heard a chuckle from behind me. I immediately turned around in surprise and truly, that was the surprise of my life.
Standing before me was a girl, a girl like no other. I had never seen anyone like her before. Her smile radiated under the sun, her hair was large and poofy like wool, and she had cinnamon colored skin. I was amazed, a girl with cinnamon colored skin, how strange.
However, I seemed to have stared for too long, because her amused expression was soon replaced with that of confusion.
She then said something, I didn’t know what she was speaking though, it sounded like gibberish. A girl with cinnamon colored skin that spoke gibberish. I was surprised and taken aback, so I took a step back, only to fall again.
She then burst out laughing, which annoyed me a little. I could feel my face getting red with embarrassment, so I immediately got back on my feet and made my way out of the barn.
The closer I got to her, the more she seemed to shine. She was extraordinarily beautiful. But she was still strange, how could someone possibly have such dark skin? It was strange. Very strange. Could she be a beast? But she looks human. But that would explain her gibberish.
I moved closer to her, taking a close look at her and examining her thoroughly. Just who is she? What is she? In other to take a closer look at her face, I pulled her towards me. However, as I was lost in thought as to what exactly she was. It took me a while to notice her eyes.
They were a light brown, with a white tint. It wasn’t unusual to have brown eyes, so I guess she was normal in that aspect, but her eyes, they were pretty. I could see my reflection clearly in them. And although they didn’t resemble the sea, I felt myself slowly getting swept away by its currents.
I finally noticed her confused look and jolted back. I apologized, but she didn’t seem to understand me.
‘Ka,’ I said, but no response, just furrowed brows. As we stood in silence, staring at each other for what seemed like years, the girl looked back and then at me, she then waved, spoke some more gibberish and left.
I found myself wishing she’d stay a bit more. The farther she got, the more I wanted to hold her. To hold her hand and tell her to stay some more. The girl with cinnamon skin, maybe she wasn’t a beast after all. But despite my desires, my hands stayed by my side.
‘Ra-non,’ My mom called. I must have stood there in my stupor for about 20 minutes because I could feel my feet start to ache.
‘Ra-non,’ My mom called again. I heard her the first time, but I was still too dazed. It took three calls for me to finally answer.
I headed back into my house. Only to meet some strange people staying in our living room.
They looked like the girl, they all had cinnamon colored skin, I knew that I was right to worry, it was undoubtably an attack. I shielded my mom with my back and told her to not worry. She then told me to calm down and explained who these strange people were.
Apparently they were sailors who had to stop on our island because of news of a pandemic, and my mom had offered to let them stay here. But, how did she know this? They all spoke gibberish.
The gibberish turned out to be English, which my mom seemed to know extremely well.
‘Ing-lee-ehsh?’
‘English,’ She corrected. So that’s what that strange girl spoke, it wasn’t gibberish and they weren’t beasts. Although, I couldn’t spot her anywhere, I could feel a sense of relief and excitement overwhelm me.
That was when she walked in. It was weird, the people in the living room had skin like hers, but there seemed to be an exotic atmosphere surrounding her. She seemed different. More radiant, more beautiful.
I could feel my cheeks start to warm up and my heart beats get louder. What was wrong with me? I didn’t like it. This peculiar feeling. I didn’t like this feeling.
‘Hi,’ the girl uttered excitedly, making her way towards me. And although I couldn’t understand what she had said, I replied ‘Hi’.
