Chapter 1

“STAY BACK," my father yelled as he pushed me behind him. His voice was desperate, a mix of fear and determination as he faced the encroaching humans. The sea churned around us, waves crashing against their vessel. My heart raced, and I clung to my father, peering out at the alien figures aboard the ship.

He swam forward, his haunting melody weaving through the water, a siren's song meant to lure the humans closer. But this time, there were too many of them. My father's song was lost in the cacophony of their own shouts and orders.

I watched, frozen, as chaos erupted before my eyes. My father's eyes widened in shock as a weapon, sharp and glinting, pierced his side. The pain etched across his face was a sight I could never forget.

As sirens around us fought valiantly, I caught a glimpse of a girl siren being captured, her screams mixing with the sounds of battle. Arrows arced through the water, finding their marks on the bodies of my kin. The humans were terrified, striking out in fear and confusion, defending themselves against foes they couldn't comprehend.

But all I had ever been told was that humans were demons of the earth, monsters to be eradicated. My young eyes had never truly seen one until now.

11 years later

In the aftermath of that fateful day, life became a tapestry of fear and sorrow. My father's sacrifice haunted my dreams, his final moments etched into my memory. The ocean, once a realm of wonder and discovery, now seemed filled with danger and uncertainty.

The passing years did little to dull the pain. Sirens were meant to embrace their calling, to lure in humans as their voices beckoned. By the age of 18, most sirens embraced this role, a natural and integral part of our existence. Yet, I was granted an extra year—a reprieve from the fate that awaited me.

We had changed our tactics after that disastrous encounter, focusing on smaller vessels to prevent a repeat of that horrific day. But questions gnawed at me. Why did we believe humans to be so irredeemable? They had not sought to harm us until we attacked first. Doubt had planted its seed, slowly growing in the fertile soil of my young mind.

As the sea breeze ruffled my hair and the waves whispered their secrets, I clung to the memory of my father, torn between the legacy he left behind and the uncertain path that lay ahead.
